Help Using the QFD Spreadsheet to Construct Houses of Quality 1. Create the first level House of Quality In the QFD 1 Definition worksheet: - Enter the name of this first QFD in the cell to the right of the QFD Title Cell. This will also be the name of the QFD worksheet, when it is created. This name must be unique and must conform to all Excel worksheet name rules. - Define the Y's. You may change the title for the Y's (Customer Expectation). You should then enter all of the Y's for this QFD in the cells directly below the title. You will then need to define the importance of each of these Y's by specifying a number adjacent to each Y, though this can be added/updated later. Optional notes may be added - Define the X's. As with the Y's, you can change the title of the X's. The specific X's should be entered in the cells below the X Title. Optional notes may also be added. Once you are happy with the Y's and X's you have defined, the first House of Quality can be created by executing the Create QFD function button. This will create a new spreadsheet, using the QFD title you specified, and will populate the spreadsheet with all of the Y's, along with all of the X's. 2. Assign Relationships to the House of Quality Using conventional QFD practices, assign the strength of the relationships between the Y's and the X's by putting either a H (high, or strong), M (medium) or L (low, or weak) in the appropriate cells (in the upper matrix). The letter can be upper or lowercase. If no letter is put in a cell, there is no relationship. The totals (scores) are computed automatically and can be viewed/hidden by setting the View Total check box (for only the Total) or the View Results check box (for the matrix of results) accordingly. The X's in this House of Quality can then be sorted based on their scores by executing the Sort QFD function button. When this House of Quality is completed, the next House can be generated by invoking the Create Next House function button. This will create a new definition worksheet (QFD 2 Definition ). 3. Define the next House of Quality In the QFD 2 Definition worksheet, the X's from the previous House of Quality have been automatically transferred to this new definition worksheet, along with their scores, as the new Y's. These should then be assigned an importance, based on your interpretation of the scores. The new X's must then be defined, along with the title for the X's and any optional notes. A new (unique) title for this QFD must be defined, in a similar fashion to the first. The Create QFD function button will then automatically prepare the next House of Quality. Steps 2 and 3 can be repeated as necessary to generate all of the Houses of Quality needed. 4. Updating a QFD If you need to update a QFD, you can add parameters to or remove parameters from an an existing QFD. You can also globally rename parameters. To add parameters, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Add new X's and Y's at the end of the lists, then execute the Add Parameter button. All new parameters will be added to the current and subsequent QFDs. To remove parameters, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Select a single parameter that you want to remove, then execute the Remove Parameter button. This parameter will be deleted from all previous and subsequent QFDs, but will be "lined out" on all appropriate definition sheets. Do not delete this entry from the definition sheet. To rename a parameter, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Select a single parameter that you want to rename, then execute the Rename Parameter button. An input box will be presented that allows you to define the new parameter name. If you enter a new parameter name, then OK, the parameter name on all preceding and subsequent sheets will be changed to the new name. Page 1

Using the QFD Spreadsheet to Construct Houses of Quality

1. Create the first level House of Quality

In the QFD 1 Definition worksheet:

- Enter the name of this first QFD in the cell to the right of the QFD Title Cell. This

will also be the name of the QFD worksheet, when it is created. This name must

be unique and must conform to all Excel worksheet name rules.

- Define the Y's. You may change the title for the Y's (Customer Expectation).

You should then enter all of the Y's for this QFD in the cells directly below the title.

You will then need to define the importance of each of these Y's by specifying a

number adjacent to each Y, though this can be added/updated later. Optional

notes may be added

- Define the X's. As with the Y's, you can change the title of the X's. The specific

X's should be entered in the cells below the X Title. Optional notes may also be

added.

Once you are happy with the Y's and X's you have defined, the first House of Quality

can be created by executing the Create QFD function button. This will create a new

spreadsheet, using the QFD title you specified, and will populate the spreadsheet

with all of the Y's, along with all of the X's.

2. Assign Relationships to the House of Quality

Using conventional QFD practices, assign the strength of the relationships between the

Y's and the X's by putting either a H (high, or strong), M (medium) or L (low, or weak)

in the appropriate cells (in the upper matrix). The letter can be upper or lowercase.

If no letter is put in a cell, there is no relationship.

The totals (scores) are computed automatically and can be viewed/hidden by setting

the View Total check box (for only the Total) or the View Results check box (for the

matrix of results) accordingly.

The X's in this House of Quality can then be sorted based on their scores by executing

the Sort QFD function button.

When this House of Quality is completed, the next House can be generated by invoking

the Create Next House function button. This will create a new definition worksheet

(QFD 2 Definition ).

3. Define the next House of Quality

In the QFD 2 Definition worksheet, the X's from the previous House of Quality have been

automatically transferred to this new definition worksheet, along with their scores, as the

new Y's. These should then be assigned an importance, based on your interpretation

of the scores.

The new X's must then be defined, along with the title for the X's and any optional notes.

A new (unique) title for this QFD must be defined, in a similar fashion to the first.

The Create QFD function button will then automatically prepare the next House

of Quality.

Steps 2 and 3 can be repeated as necessary to generate all of the Houses of Quality

needed.

4. Updating a QFD

If you need to update a QFD, you can add parameters to or remove parameters from an

an existing QFD. You can also globally rename parameters.

To add parameters, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Add new X's and Y's at the end

of the lists, then execute the Add Parameter button. All new parameters will be added to

the current and subsequent QFDs.

To remove parameters, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Select a single parameter

that you want to remove, then execute the Remove Parameter button. This parameter

will be deleted from all previous and subsequent QFDs, but will be "lined out" on all

appropriate definition sheets. Do not delete this entry from the definition sheet.

To rename a parameter, go to the appropriate definition sheet. Select a single parameter

that you want to rename, then execute the Rename Parameter button. An input box

will be presented that allows you to define the new parameter name. If you enter a new

parameter name, then OK, the parameter name on all preceding and subsequent sheets

will be changed to the new name.
