Dear Parents and Carers,
The highlight of last week had to be the book
character parade. So many students came to
school looking awesome in their outfits. Well
done to those crafty parents who supported
their kids to look so good. Thank you Mrs
Summers for your continued enthusiasm to
support this event.

Thank you to the parents and carers who
supported the book fair last week. Big thanks
to Mrs Summers and Jody for their efforts in
organising a great event under less than ideal
conditions.
Year 2-6 had a visit from Senior Constable
Matt Berry, Youth Liaison Officer on
Wednesday. Matt spoke to the students
about being responsible citizens, bullying and
clarified what it means to assault another
person. He will be back later this term for a
follow up visit.
Thank you to all the parents who continue to
adhere to the departmental guidelines and
avoid being on school grounds. Your support
is appreciated. We are all looking forward to
when we can move freely on school grounds
again soon.
We are looking forward to the visit from RFW
next week. Don’t forget the parent information
session is on Wednesday afternoon. The
clinicians are very keen to make contact with
as many parents as possible to answer your
questions and discuss how they can support
your children during their visit and beyond.
Quaama PS had a visit from the Department
of Education Executive Director Kathy
Powzun last week. She wanted to see the
school and speak to staff to get a deeper

understanding of our context. She was very
grateful for the honest feedback from all staff
that helped her understand the depth of
complexity and she is adamant she will
advocate for needs into the future.
Our federal member Kristy McBain has
confirmed she will be at presentation day this
year. We are still making arrangements for a
live feed and a recording of the event and how
many people can attend.
Thanks again to Bek for OzHarvest donations
during the outdoor education activities During
Week 3. Kids loved the bacon and egg rolls
and sandwiches for breakfast.

It is certainly getting to the busy end of the
year. Last week students undertook a range of
assessments, from story writing to maths,
spelling and comprehension. The results of
these assessments will assist in producing
data for reports. We also had a Book Parade
with an impressive line up of characters.
Swimming for Sport
Last Friday was our second session in the
pool. Two groups of sixteen students each
have forty-five minutes in the pool with Jim,
4/5/6 Classroom News
Barb, Ashton, myself and one other teacher
providing lessons. The teacher to student
ratio is very low so there is lots of learning
happening. Last Friday we welcomed the
assistance of Mrs Lendstrom, a very
experienced swimming teacher. She will be
running the program this Friday as I will be
attending a course. Those students who do
not attend the lessons have been enjoying
some creative Art sessions with Miss Harding.
Space Topic
The 456 class has been learning more about
Space. They have been researching and
presenting projects on diverse topics such as
Galaxies, Nebulae, Space Vehicles, Probes
and Comets. This week we focused on the
Origins of the Universe. Students physically
demonstrated the enormous changes that
occurred after the Big Bang as matter
changed into protons and neutrons, then into
Hydrogen atoms and eventually into stars,
planets and moons.

Universe
The very small black dot represented what was
there before the Big Bang.

Year 2/3/4 recognised NAIDOC Week by
exploring Indigenous symbols and discussing
how Indigenous stories are handed down to
each new generation by sharing verbal stories
as well as symbols that we can see in many
Indigenous artworks. We drew Indigenous
symbols onto the Aboriginal flag and created a
class artwork display including all our hands in
the classroom.
Remembrance Day 11/11
Remembrance Day falls on the 11th of
November each year. On the 11th hour of the
11th day of the 11th month, a minutes’ silence
is observed and dedicated to those soldiers
who died fighting to protect the nation. We
commemorate the loss of Australian lives from
all wars and conflicts on Remembrance Day.
At Quaama Public School we acknowledged
Remembrance Day with a whole-school
ceremony at the front of our school that
included our national flags at half mast, a
minute silence and the last post and rouse.
We were excited to learn that Quaama is one
of the schools chosen to grow some seeds
that will spend six months in space. The
astronauts that will look after these seeds
arrived at the International Space Station on
Tuesday night and the cargo flight will be
launched in early December. We have also
been watching footage of this week’s amazing
meteor shower – the Leonid Shower – that is
the brightest and most frequent of the year.
There’s always something happening in the
world of Space.
Captains’ Speeches
On Monday many of the Year 5 students
delivered their pitch to be chosen as one of
the Quaama School Captains for 2021. All of
the students and staff receive two votes to
cast for who they think will be responsible and
helpful members of the school. The speeches
are available to watch online Captain’s
Speeches. The results will be announced
during our Presentation Day event in the last
week of Term.

NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week celebrations are held across
Australia to celebrate the history, culture and
achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait
Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not
only in Indigenous communities, but by
Australians from all walks of life. The week is
a great opportunity to participate in a range of
activities and to support our local Aboriginal
and Torres Strait Islander community.

2/3/4 Classroom News
Students created red poppy’s as a part of
their learning about the importance of the day.
In Year 2/3/4 we listened to the book “Alfred’s
War,” by Samantha Fry. Alfred’s War is a
powerful story that unmasks the lack of
recognition given to Australian Indigenous
servicemen who returned from WW1 battle
lines. This poignant narrative opens our
hearts to the sacrifice and contribution that
Indigenous people have made to Australia’s
war efforts.
You can listen to the story and discussion
about Alfred’s War online here: Alfred's War
Book Character Parade
Wow! There were some interesting characters
that came to school last week as part of the
Book Character Parade! Instead of regular
students, we had Matilda, Moana, Wizard,
Ash from Pokemon, Joker from Suicide
Squad, Andy and Jill from the Treehouse
Series, Murder the Clown, A soldier from Toy
Story, Malificent’s daughter Mau, Ninja Kid,
Pikachu, Billy B. Brown, Rapunzel, Claudia
from the Baby Sitters Club. Instead of regular
teachers, we had Miss Harding as Little Red
Riding Hood and Di was the Big Bad Wolf!

Antarctica and Global Warming
This term in Geography we are learning about
the 7 continents of the world as well as the
effects of Global Warming on our environment,
plants and animals. This past week we have
focused on the continent of Antarctica and the
effects of Global Warming on the penguin
population.
Did you know that Global Warming increases
melting of the Antarctic Ice Sheet, causing sea
levels to rise? Scientists state that increased
loss of sea ice would also impact Antarctic
species which rely on it to reproduce.
We created artworks of penguins to
complement our learning in Geography.

Playing Minecraft is a new option for
lunchtime activities
As the weather is starting to warm up and the
UV ratings are also climbing, the students
have an option to play Minecraft in the Year
2/3/4 classroom for half of their lunch times.
This option can also help to alleviate some of
the behaviour incidents that can occur in the
playground, particularly on very hot days. To
qualify to play Minecraft at lunchtimes,
students must first have a short break outside
to eat their food and enjoy the fresh air before
coming indoors. It has been great watching
the students learn more about coding and
cooperate with each other through their
journeys in the Minecraft worlds.
Thank you to all of the Quaama families who
made so much effort again this year with
costurmes for our book character parade. The
students and staff always have a fun day.
This year we combined our character parade
and book fair. Many excited students visited
the Library to choose books to take home and
enjoy. Thank you for all of your support, in less
than favourable circumstances. Thank you to
families who donated a book to our Library,
Jody will get these books ready for these
students to borrow first. We were able to
purchase books to the value of $450.00 and
look forward to displaying them in the Library.

Hello from the Kinder and Year 1 classroom,
where we are all busy completing assessment
tasks for our December reports. The end of
the year is drawing close – we can’t believe
how quickly the term is disappearing! Every
