Curriculum development. I developed course 1 & 2 in the below list, and

contributed significantly to restructuring of course 3, part of a new curriculum,

initiated in 2009 in the college of Medicine and Health Sciences, SQU.

1. Research Methodology (MED1 4202) 2 Credits

2. Student Project – (MEDI 5302) 3 Credits

These courses introduce students to biomedical research through research-

based learning activities. The course covers concept and fundamentals of

research methodology and analytical skills through lectures, tutorials and hands

on practice through the planning and implementation of a research project.

3. Molecular biology and principles of genetics (MEDI3101) 3 credits. This

course introduces fundamental aspects of molecular biology and genetics in

medicine, and their impact in health and disease. Current views and new

concepts relating to diagnosis, prognosis, prevention and treatment of diseases

are highlighted.

Since 2006, I have been working with the National Malaria Control

Department, Ministry of Health, and Oman, to establish advanced molecular

facilities for diagnosis of imported malaria parasites. Since 2006, I acquired

three research grants, one supported by SQU and two by the International

Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) aim at using radionuclide-based molecular

methods for diagnosis of different species of malaria parasites. This has

allowed training of staff in the malaria control department on molecular

diagnosis, and establishment of PCR-Based diagnostic facilities.

In addition, I have recently acquired a project grant from Research Council,

Oman to work on Theileria parasites. The project is carried in close

collaboration with scientists in the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries. This

project will contribute to building capacity for Theileria control program, and

strengthen the national research capacity and skills for diagnosis of parasitic

diseases in Animals. Two staff members of Ministry of Agriculture and

Fisheries are involved as graduate students in the project.

C6. SCHOLARLY ACHIEVEMENTS.

Research interests:-

My research interest is in the field of molecular and population genetics of infectious

diseases. I have applied my expertise and knowledge to analysis of the human malaria

parasite Plasmodium falciparum. This includes work on genetic polymorphism within

populations of the parasite and its population genetic structure. This is especially in

relation to evolution of drug resistance, and how environmental and parasite genetic

factors influence the transmission of resistant parasites. I have recently initiated

parallel work on population genetics of Mycobacterium tuberculosis and Theileria sp.
