Gilbert Staff “Stomp Out Bullying”
October was National Bullying Prevention Month.

of Bullying Prevention by wearing the official blue shirt

event go to www.stompoutbullying.org
One hundred and fifty stuffed Christmas stockings are being sent to troops overseas, all from the efforts of students and staff at Eveleth-Gilbert Schools. In fact, so may items were donated that after all the stockings were stuffed, there were enough items to fill two more large boxes. Wow! That means a lot of people had a part in this great effort to support our troops.
Mrs. Bauman’s Senior High Family and Consumer Science class sewed one hundred and fifty stockings. Her Independent Living class spearheaded the donations, made flyers, advertised, and stuffed the stockings. Students in grades five through eight made cards in their computer classes. Mrs. Custer’s art class helped with a display. Many items were donated by Gilbert Cam-pus students along with Senior High students and staff throughout the district as well as some community members. Each stocking has a variety of granola bars, beef sticks, hot chocolate or other drink mIxes, cookies, candy, hand wipes, toiletries, and several cards made by students. The stockings were presented to the Ladies Auxiliary of the Gilbert VFW at the Veteran’s Day program that was held on November 9.

Greetings everyone! My name is Drew Flaschberger and I will be completing my School Counseling internship with the Eveleth-Gilbert School District for the 2012-2013 school year. After this experience, I will be graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Superior with a Masters Degree in K-12 School Counseling. I feel very fortunate to be able to come and
spend some time working with the incredible people that make up this school district. I have felt very welcomed by both faculty members and students during the time that I have spent here thus far! The enthusiasm and effort that I see from teachers and students at the schools make me excited to come in and work!
As for my background, I graduated from Mountain Iron/Buhl High School in 2006 and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from UW-Superior in 2010. Growing up as an Iron Ranger, I had a passion to return back and raise my family here. I am blessed to have two wonderful children (Ryley age 2 and Greyson age 2 months) and my supportive fiancé Chelsea.
I look forward to working with everyone at Eveleth-Gilbert and hope to get to know many more of the parents and students that make this place so enjoyable!

Is Your Family included in the School District Census?
Each school district in Minnesota is required to keep a census of all children ages 0-5 who are not yet in kindergarten.
This count helps for ECFE and School Readiness programs, and also Kindergarten enrollment.
A census form is available to download on the district website www.isd2154.k12.mn.us or by calling 218-744-7774

Summer's activities finally came to a end in October for EGHS stu-dent Andrea Licari. Last Spring, An-drea partici-pated in Mr. Clouse's Woodshop class in Gil-bert, build-ing the rocking chair pro-
ject. Andrea's family had greatly anticipated this, as many students before have successfully built this beau-tiful chair. Also involved with Northern St. Louis County 4H, Andrea thought the chair would be a great item to enter in the County Fair, during the summer. Andrea successfully achieved a blue ribbon at the St Louis County Fair in August, also receiving a red ribbon for her wood knife block. This made her eligible for a State Fair trip should the Grand and reserve Champions in that category decline. Andrea discussed the chair project with the fair judges, explaining the process and the things she learned from Mr. Clouse while making the chair. As luck would have it, Andrea was able to present it at the State Fair. Because of its size, the chair had to be privately transported. When the chair arrived at the fairgrounds, the volunteers on staff began taking turns lounging in the chair. It was said later, that many people tried the chair, even offering to buy it, until it was placed in its assigned exhibit. At the State Fair level, Andrea had to present the project to a larger panel of both adult and peer judges, answering questions about her building process
and decisions she made in finishing the chair. She attended the event with a large group of 4Hers from all over the Arrowhead and North Shore ar-eas. While at the State Fair with 4H, the students were able to stay on site for several days, enjoying the Fair and attending special 4H events. Young people going into 7th grade to college freshman are eligible to participate at the State Fair should their exhibits qualify at the County level. Northern St. Louis County has an exciting variety of opportunities for Youth. Andrea was also able to certify as a Shooting Sports & Wildlife Youth In-structor in Archery through 4H, attending a retreat near McGregor last Spring. For more information on what 4H has to offer Iron Range Youth of all ages, contact Wade Herbanson, 4H Program Coor-dinator at the Northern St. Louis County office, 218-749-7100, ext 7265. 4H has several clubs throughout the Iron Range, with Andrea being a member of the Vermilion 4H Club in Embarrass. EGHS student, Julianne Kaldahl also exhibited at the State Fair, earning a blue ribbon for her County Fair Grand Champion exhibit about Wasps. Julianne is a member of the Lakeland Four Leaf Clovers Club. After the State Fair has concluded, it was time to pick up exhibits. If exhibits were not claimed by a certain day and time, they would be forfeited; so, it was imperative to retrieve the chair. On the way to the fair, with hours to spare, the Licari family vehicle broke down in Cloquet. It was a panic situation for a while as the chair would certainly end up in a fair volunteer's house if not claimed. A close family friend, a Crime Scene Investigator from the Metro area, was able to pick up the chair in the Crime Lab van. Stored in a garage used for vehicle processing, the State Fair Chair probably witnessed some pretty interesting things. Because of hockey camps, the soccer season, and the new school year, Andrea was not able to pick up the chair from the Crime Lab. Over MEA Weekend, they were able to make the trip down to the Twin Cities, getting a very interesting tour of the Crime Lab while picking up the chair. After three seasons, the chair is at rest on the back deck of the Licari home. If only chairs could speak, we might find out how many more adventures this school wood shop chair had been through.
