Me encanta el mes de febrero en La Antigua. Aunque se denomina el mes loco debido al clima cambiante, es sobre todo hermoso
y romántico, y si bien siempre hay un montón de eventos en este mes, también es la calma antes de la tormenta que es Semana Santa.
Para ustedes que están celebrando su amor, no podían estar en otro sitio tan perfecto como La Antigua. Amantes en el parque, patios de estilo español llenos de una sobreabundancia de flores, las campanas de la iglesia y las calles empedradas: si La Antigua es romántica incluso cualquier martes común y corriente, ¡imagínense como es el Día de San Valentín! Cada restaurante, hotel y spa tiene algo romántico planeado. Incluso, para recaudar fondos para caridad, hay un baile del Día de San Valentín, organizado por el Club Rotario de Antigua en las impresionantes ruinas de Las Capuchinas. Y si eres solter@, ve a los bares, diviértete, y tal vez te enamores aunque solo sea por una noche.

I love the month of February in La Antigua. While it might be referred to as el mes loco because of the changeable weather, it’s
mostly beautiful and romantic, and while there are always lots of events this month, it’s also the calm before the Semana Santa storm.
For all of you celebrating love, you couldn’t be anywhere else as perfect as La Antigua. Lovers in the park, Spanish-style courtyards dripping with flowers, church bells, and cobblestone streets: La Antigua is romantic even on an average Tuesday, let alone Valentine’s Day! Every restaurant, hotel and spa has something romantic planned. There’s even a Valentine’s Day charity ball hosted by the Rotary Club of Antigua in the stunning ruins of Las Capuchinas. And if you’re single, head out to the bars, have some fun, and perhaps fall in love if only for the night.
Either way, Happy Valentine’s Day!

No te apenas a veces por la gente que vive en países con fuertes estaciones del año? ¿Has vivido donde existen otoño e invierno?
Hay lugares donde hay largos meses en que nada crece en la tierra y la mayor parte del año no hay productos frescos y locales, como papaya, aguacate, tomate, güisquil, arvejas frescas, y muchos más de la generosidad que tenemos la suerte de ver en los mercados guatemaltecos prácticamente todos los días. Pobre gente...
Encabezando la lista de “Cosas por las Cuales Mataría en Una Noche de Invierno Frío en un País Maldito con Temporadas” es la piña. La piña, o Ananas comosus, es una planta tropical originaria de Paraguay y Brasil, que se extendió por toda América del Sur y Central y floreció en Guatemala y México, donde los mayas y los aztecas eran muy aficionados a su sabor. Fue descubierta en América en 1493 por Cristóbal Colón y presentada en España poco después. Se desarrolló en Europa un público fanático de esta fruta dulce de color
amarillo brillante, y se convirtió en un símbolo de riqueza, representada en plata, cristal y otros artículos de lujo, ya que solamente los ricos podían adquirirla.
A diferencia de los pobrecitos que viven en El Norte, Guatemala tiene la piña – localmente producida y baratísima – durante todo el año. Por alrededor de Q10 o menos, puedes llevar a casa un enorme ejemplar, que a menudo puede rendir dos o tres libras de fruta. ¿Qué hacer con todo ese oro amarillo y brillante? A continuación, algunas sugerencias:
• Pon cuatro tazas de piña cortada en pedazos en un procesador de alimentos o licuadora y licúala hasta que quede líquida. Cuela los sólidos; mezcla con menta, miel o azúcar, ron y agua mineral para un mojito de piña.
• Guarda los sólidos y mézclalos con jalapeños, cebollines, jugo de limón y sal para una salsa que es deliciosa con chips o encima de pollo o pescado a la parrilla.

• Pon trozos de piña en brocheta con pedazos de carne de cerdo, chiles
dulces y cebollas. Rocian con aceite de oliva. Espolvorea con sal y pimienta. Cocina las brochetas a la parrilla y sírvelas con arroz, o con tortillas para rápidos tacos mexicanos.
• ¡Guarda la cáscara! Después de cortar la cáscara, rocía el lado de la fruta con un poco de aceite (como aceite de oliva o de aguacate), espolvorea con azúcar gruesa y ¡a la ducha! Utiliza las cáscaras de piña como una esponja (o pashte) y frota tu cuerpo para un exfoliante refrescante y fragante.
• ¡No tires la parte superior! Al cortar, deja por lo menos 5 cm de fruta unida a la corona. Sécala de cabeza durante una semana, luego ponla – con las hojas arriba – en un vaso de agua y las raíces crecerán. Siembra la corona de piña en una maceta de 30 cm y en 18 a 24 meses, ¡tendrás una piña bebé!

Columbus in the Americas in 1493, and presented in Spain shortly afterward. An almost cult-like following for this bright yellow, sweet fruit developed in Europe, and it became a symbol of wealth, depicted on silver, crystal and other luxury items, as only the rich could afford it.
Unlike the poor souls living in el norte, Guatemala has pineapple – locally grown and as cheap as can be – all year round. For around Q10 or less, you can heave home a huge, prize-winning specimen that can often yield two to three pounds of fruit. What to do with all of that bright yellow gold? Here are a few suggestions:
• Throw four cups of roughly chopped pineapple into a food processor or blender and purée until liquid. Strain out solids; mix with mint, honey or sugar, rum and mineral water for a pineapple mojito.
• Save those solids and mix with jalapeños, green onions, lime juice and salt for a salsa that is great with chips or spooned over grilled chicken or fish.
• Skewer chunks of pineapple with pork, red peppers and onions. Brush with olive oil. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill skewers and serve over rice or with tortillas for quick tacos.
• Save the skin! After cutting off the skin, drizzle the fruit side with a little bit of oil (like olive or avocado oil), sprinkle with coarse sugar and hit the shower! Use the pineapple skins like a loofah and rub over your body for a refreshing and sweet-smelling exfoliant.
• Don’t throw away that top! When cutting, leave at least two inches of fruit attached to the crown. Dry upside down for a week, then put it right side up in a glass of water and roots will grow. Plant your pineapple top in a 12” pot and in 18-24 months, you will have a baby pineapple!

GüisquilGeneralmente de color verde claro hasta verde oscuro, el güisquil es el fruto de una enredadera eflorescente de a la familia de las calabazas. Con una textura usual a las calabazas, el güisquil se puede cocinar (hervido, al vapor, frito o al horno) hasta que esté suave, dándole una textura ligeramente tiesa pero todavía acuosa (como un cruce entre una papa y un pepino). Algunas personas también comen la fruta cruda en ensaladas o marinada con jugo de limón y una pizca de chilito. Menos popular, pero también comestibles son las semillas, tallos, hojas y raíces de la planta.
ChayoteUsually ranging from light to dark green, chayote (güisquil in Guatemala) is the fruit of a flowering vine that belongs to the gourd family. Similar in texture to squash, chayote can be cooked (boiled, steamed, fried or baked) until soft, giving it a slightly starchy yet watery texture (like a cross between a potato and a cucumber). Some people also eat the fruit raw in salads or marinated with lime juice and a dash of chili. Less popular, but also edible, are the seeds, stems, leaves and roots of the plant.

Mesón Panza Verde presenta un recital único por los estudiantes y talleristas del Sistema de Orquestas de Guatemala (SOG), una organización que busca el desarrollo, el fomento de valores y la inclusión de l@s niñ@s y jóvenes más vulnera-bles del país por medio de la práctica colectiva de la música. Actualmente el SOG maneja dos proyectos: un centro de formación musical y un taller de luthería, donde niños y jóvenes aprenden a fabricar y reparar instrumentos musicales. Todos los fondos recaudados serán para apoyar las iniciativas del Sistema de Orquestas.
Mesón Panza Verde presents a unique concert by students of the Orchestra System of Guatemala (SOG), an organization that seeks development, the promotion of values, and the inclusion of the most vulnerable children and youth in the country through mu-sic. Currently SOG manages two projects: a musical training cen-ter and an instrument workshop, where children and young people learn to make and repair musical instruments. All funds raised will support SOG’s initiatives.

Romanza, un recital de obras de ópera y Zarzuela, así como de canción romántica latinoamericana será presentado en Casa Santo Domingo. Los fondos recaudados serán a beneficio de los albergues operados por las Hijas de María Seiqueur. Se presentarán las sopranos Karin Rademann y Julia Pimentel con los tenores Gerardo Reynoso y Héctor Palomo, acompañados por el pianista Hugo Arenas.

Proceeds will benefit the shelters operated by the Daughters of María Seiqueur. Nicho Hinojosa es un guitarrista mexicano originario de Monterrey y es reconocido artísticamente en países de habla hispana y Europa. Aunque no ha alcanzado gran fama, ha logrado tener muchos admiradores, principalmente en México y Estados Unidos después de su ascenso a la fama en México gracias a su participación en el reality show Big Brother. El cantautor de 28 años de edad ha grabado varios discos y ha hecho giras por muchos países de América Latina, y ahora trae su guitarra, su voz y su música trova tradicional a Guatemala.
Nicho Hinojosa is a Mexican guitarist from Monterrey and is artistically recognized in Spanish-speaking countries and Europe. Although he has not achieved great fame, he does have many admirers, especially in Mexico and the United States, after his rise to fame in Mexico thanks to his participation in the reality show Big Brother. The 28-year-old singer/songwriter has recorded several albums and has toured throughout many countries in Latin America, and now brings his guitar, his voice, and his traditional trova (troubadour-style) music to Guatemala.

Maximón – Santo o Diablo es un documental sobre una
deidad Maya muy polémica que simultáneamente personifica el bien y el mal. Maximón es conocido también como San Simón o el santo de Guatemala al que le gusta fumar y beber. Él es una mezcla de las creencias Maya y los pensamientos religiosos católicos. La película se centra en la gente que rodea a Maximón y sus fuertes personalidades, opiniones y fe. El culto a Maximón ha florecido porque él hace milagros pero al mismo tiempo es temido porque puede ser usado para hechizar a alguien e incluso causar la muerte. Esta película provee una vista poco común adentro los rituales y festivales en honor a Maximón y presenta un viaje que es alegre y aterrador a la vez. Fundamentalmente, Maximón trasciende la dualidad del bien y el mal, reflejando la cosmovisión Maya en la cual nada en el universo es independiente; todo es una coexistencia.
El estreno mundial de Maximón – Santo o Diablo (66 min.) se llevará a cabo a las 6 PM el 5 de febrero en el Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Española (MAP D4). Este documental, filmado en su totalidad en Guatemala, es presentado en español con subtítulos en inglés. “El misterio que rodea a Maximón jugó un papel importante en la creación de esta película. Hace 25 años vivía yo en Londres. Sin razón aparente, creé una figura de una máscara y ropa vieja. Le di un sombrero de vaquero. Le di gafas de sol. Le di un cigarrillo, y le di una cerveza. En este momento no sabía nada acerca de Maximón. No fue sino hasta 25 años después, en mi primer viaje a Guatemala, que entré en la Casa de Maximón en Zunil, donde inmediatamente reconocí la figura que estaba sentada en su trono como la misma que había construido en Londres. Realmente yo no tenía más remedio que hacer esta película. Esto comenzó nuestro viaje con Maximón.”
“The mystery that surrounds Maximón played a large part in the creation of this film. 25 years ago I was living in London. For no apparent reason, I created a figure out of old clothes and a mask. I gave him a cowboy hat. I gave him sunglasses. I gave him a cigarette, and I gave him a beer. At this point I knew nothing about Maximón. It wasn’t until 25 years later, on my first trip to Guatemala, that I walked into the Casa de Maximón in Zunil, where I immediately recognized the figure sitting on his throne as the same one I had constructed in London. I really had no choice but to make this film. This began our journey with Maximón.”

Maximón – Saint or Devil is a documentary about a controversial Mayan
deity who personifies good and evil simultaneously. Maximón, also known as San Simón, or the drinking and smoking saint of Guatemala, is a mixture of ancient Maya beliefs and Catholic Christianity. The movie concentrates on the people who surround Maximón with their strong personalities, opinions, and faith. The cult of Maximón is flourishing
because he performs miracles. He is also feared and despised because he is used to cast curses that can result in death. Giving a rare view into the rituals and festivals honoring Maximón, the documentary presents a journey that is both joyous and terrifying. Ultimately Maximón transcends the duality of good and evil, reflecting the Mayan cosmovision in which nothing in the universe is separate; everything co-exists.
The world premier of Maximón – Saint or Devil (66 min.) will be held at 6 PM on February 5th at the Centro de Formación de la Cooperación Es-pañola (MAP D4). This documentary, filmed entirely in Guatemala, is in Spanish with English subtitles.
