“Queen Elizabeth I, we remember Raleigh, Queen Elizabeth II, it’s gonna be the Beatles.” Sir Paul McCartney made this immodest and debatable observation prior to his performance at the Diamond Jubilee concert earlier this year. It perhaps devalues other aspects of our current queen’s reign but there is no doubting their remarkable influence in changing the course of popular music history. Between 1963 and 1969, they achieved 17 No 1 hits, conquered the world and created a legacy that still resonates half a century later. Remarkably, this week is the 50 th anniversary of the release of Love Me Do, their first assault on the UK charts. As the home of real music, we could not ignore this epic milestone and are delighted to present The Mersey Beatles in concert this coming Saturday. For those who never had an opportunity to hear the Beatles perform live, this is the probably closest you are likely to get to the real thing. The Mersey Beatles are Liverpool’s official tribute band, endorsed by both John Lennon’s sister and the Beatles original booking manager Joe Flannery. Oh, and they are the only tribute band to feature an all- Liverpudlian line-up. This is the concert The Beatles never gave, all their hits in one show, complete with four costume changes and eight original “Beatle” guitars for that touch of authenticity. It doesn’t matter if you clap along or rattle your jewellery - as John Lennon once famously invited a Royal Variety Show audience - this will be a magical night to remember. Whether you lived through the 60’s or want to discover what it was like when the whole world sang “yeah, yeah, yeah”, don’t delay because the remaining tickets are selling fast. Audience Foibles Whilst designing the

programme for Richard

Markham’s recent 60th

Birthday Concert, it became

apparent that a change in page layout would be required

to avoid an unwelcome

disruption to the performance.

How easy to overlook the crescendo of page turning, during one of the quietest moments in the recital, as music lovers assiduously followed the programme notes. All of which begs the question, what is expected of an audience? The obvious answer is, perhaps, to buy a ticket, enjoy the performance and laugh/applaud in the appropriate places. If only it was that simple. The author of this newsletter well remembers attending the performance of a play with friends. One of whom, on a

weekend visit from university, had stashed his travel bag beneath his seat. At a crucial and deathly silent moment in the plot, his alarm clock began to ring loudly and persistently; all attempts to locate the offending item in the depths of his bag failed. This, of course, was long before the advent of mobile telephones. In spite of reminders, there are still people who forget to turn off their phone but they may commit the offence only once. Earlier this year, the conductor of the New York Philharmonic took the rare step of halting the performance of Mahler’s Ninth Symphony and staring in the direction of the ringing phone. At another theatre, the decision to escort a similar offender from the auditorium prompted a standing ovation from a

disgruntled audience. Meanwhile, during a performance of The History Boys, Richard Griffiths famously berated an offender, whose phone kept going off, “I am asking you to stand up, leave this auditorium, and never, ever come back.”

They say the incessant pinpricks of light piercing the darkness of an auditorium, as people check their messages, are equally distracting to those on stage.

However, what spoils your evening’s entertainment? Is it the rustle of sweet papers, the late arrival of people unable to tell the time or those who discover a need to visit the loo only 10 minutes after the curtain rises? Perhaps theatregoers who insist on providing a running commentary and forget it’s not television but a live play they are watching are an irritation? Some distractions can be vaguely amusing; this writer once observed a young couple who clearly thought their “amorous activities” were invisible within the confines of their private theatre box! When it comes to foibles, we all have them and no doubt, from time to time, someone will point a finger at us.

Tick, Tock Are you a Watchmatologist? In case you are wondering, that’s the scientific name for a watch collector. Well, if so, you can now combine your hobby with a love of music. Swiss watchmakers Boegli have been

producing watches for more than a century and have just released their Grand Opera Limited Edition. At the press of a button, this fine fully handmade timepiece with a rose-gold-plated case can play the “chime of bells” from Mozart’s The Magic Flute. It’s a snip at £2790 (!) and it’s easy

to justify the cost. Fellow watchmakers Hublot are currently offering the Big Bang, which strikes the time in hours, quarters and minutes. That, however, will cost you an eye watering £270,000. No, that’s not a typing mistake! So you see, Mozart really is a magic price!
