I. GENERAL

All QUEST 70/TL-2, 100/TL-3 and 115/TL-3 Mod Systems shall be designed and manufactured by, orunder the direction of, Energy Absorption Systems, Incorporated, of Chicago, Illinois.

II. DESCRIPTION OF SYSTEM

A. GeneralThe QUEST 70/TL-2, 100/TL-3 and 115/TL-3 Mod (speed modified to 115 km/h) Systems

are bi-directional non-gating terminals and crash cushions that have been crash tested to Test Level3 Mod (115 km/h) and Test Level 3 (100 km/h) and Test Level 2 (70 km/h) according to recom-mendations in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program Report 350 (NCHRP 350)1.

The QUEST Systems shall consist of two front anchor assemblies, a nose assembly containing anintegrated trigger assembly, two shaper rail assemblies, a support frame assembly with two energyabsorbing tube shapers, a diaphragm assembly, laminated sheet metal straps attaching to the W-beam fender panel assemblies which can telescope rearward during head-on impacts, two rear rails, and a freestanding backup assembly which will include two rear shapers on 100/TL-3 and 115/TL-3 Mod models.

The system of front anchors, shaper rails, rear rails, backup, W-beam fender panels, and diaphragmsshall resist lateral movement during side angle impacts. These components acting with the noseassembly will telescope rearward to attenuate head-on impacts. Thus the QUEST Systems aredesigned to collapse at the front and then the rear depending on the amount of impact energy ab-sorbed. The Support Frame is the only section that does not collapse. The Shaper Rail attaches toFront Anchors in the front and to the Backup at the rear. The Shaper Rails are deformed by a set ofShapers to absorb impact energy. Transitions are available and may be required depending on thehazard being shielded.

B. Component Description

1. A bay describes an individual section of the QUEST 70/TL-2, 100/TL-3 and 115/TL-3 ModSystems. There are five bays in the 115/TL-3 Mod model, four bays in the 100/TL-3 modeland three bays in the 70/TL-2 model.

a. Bay 1 consists of a 915 mm long rigid Support Frame that tracks along energy absorbingShaper Rails during frontal impacts into the system. Shaper rails also resist overturning andgating during side impacts.

Due to its light weight and minimal number of anchors, the QUEST System is designed for field repair or rapidreplacement of the entire system.

Depending upon the severity of the impact and site con-ditions, the QUEST System can be either refurbished onthe roadside or repaired in the maintenance shop awayfrom traffic dangers.

Some of the QUEST System's components remain un-damaged after less severe impacts making refurbishmentpossible. Entire units can be repaired and then reused onthe roadside or the damaged portion can be refurbishedand reused as needed.

IMPORTANT: After an impact, always follow the“Post-Impact Instructions” in the maintenancesection of the Installation Manual.

QUEST® SystemLimitations and Limitations and Limitations and Limitations and Limitations and WWWWWarningsarningsarningsarningsarnings

The QUEST® System has been tested and evaluatedper the recommendations of the National CooperativeHighway Research Program (NCHRP) report 350.* TheQUEST System is capable of: decelerating and stop-ping light and heavy weight vehicles (820 to 2000 kg[1804 to 4400 lb]) when impacted head-on at anglesup to 15 degrees on the nose at 70 km/h [44 m.p.h.],100 km/h [62.1 m.p.h.] and 115 km/h [71.5 m.p.h.] re-spectively; and redirecting heavy weight vehicles(2000 kg [4400 lb]) when impacted at 70 km/h[44 m.p.h.] and 100 km/h [62.1 mph] respectivelyalong the system's side at 20 degrees or less. Testsare conducted on asphalt and concrete with slopesless than 8 degrees and without curbs.

A smooth transition must be provided when theQUEST System is installed in a bidirectional trafficsituation.

Excessive curb height may create a ramping effect, which could create an unsafe vehicle trajectory.

After an impact occurs, the system should be repairedor replaced as soon as possible.

Refer to this Installation Manual for replacing Systemsor contact Customer Service at 312-467-6750 or 888-323-6374.

WARNING!Impact conditions that differ from those described inthe *NCHRP 350 test matrix for redirective, non-gatingcrash cushions may result in different crash resultsthan those encountered in testing. Furthermore, impacts in excess of TL-2, TL-3 or 115 km/h impactseverity or the existence of unusual impact conditionssuch as vehicle instability resulting from traversingcurbs or excessive cross slopes prior to impact maycompromise crash performance. Under theseconditions, performance criteria relative to structuraladequacy, occupant risk and vehicle trajectory may notmeet NCHRP 350 evaluation criteria.
