FRONT COVER

I created the masthead of my magazine on dafont.com, I used this website because it offered a wide range of different font styles. I wanted a font that represented distortion and anger and so I searched words related to this.

This is the font that stood out to me the most because it is bold, sans serif, and has a very rough edge which portrays violence and fear.

I also used dafont.com to find the fonts used for these small banners which appear at the left of the page. I searched for fonts that were similar to the bands individual logo’s so they would be recognizable to the audience.

My cover story needed to portray similar emotions to my masthead. To achieve this, I browsed dafont.com for other ‘distortion’ fonts but felt none were perfectly suitable for my magazine.

I then went on fontspace.com and searched the same theme; ‘distortion’. A wider range of fonts appeared and I was also able to change the background colour and font colour (although I did not need to use this in my magazine).

I wrote in what I wanted my cover story to say so I could see exactly what it would look like, so I typed in ‘flesh gates’ in the text bar.

A wide range of fonts were found but I felt that this font called “Clarks summit panic” represented the right amount of fear, distortion, but also portrayed elements of blood and gore which was perfect to represent the words “flesh gates” and emphasize the effect it gives to the audience.

I took this photograph of my self using a Fujifilm bridge camera to ensure it was the best possible quality I could achieve. Post editing included effects I created on photograph editing software called Picasa. The process of making it how it is includes turning it black and white and editing the contrast slightly to ensure the blacks and whites were more strongly opposing.

This is a smaller section of the photograph which I edited using Picasa, I wanted to make the whole eye black to make it look slightly more creepy and surreal. I created this effect by retouching the entire area in a black shade.

CONTENTS

For the heading on my contents page, I felt the font should be the same of my masthead to show the relation between the two pages. Although I wanted it in white, rather than black which dafont.com was not able to offer.

Since fontspace.com do have the option of change the font and background colour, I searched the website for the font most similar to my masthead.

I used related searches such as ‘distortion’ again to find this font and went through the same process of finding the most suitable.

I took this photograph using a digital camera

which enabled me to get a photograph of a high quality. I then I edited it on befunky.com where there were a range of different editing tools and effects that were not available on Picasa, the photo editing software that I used previously.

To achieve the effect that appears in the photograph I reduced the saturation to make it appear more eerie, and also added a ‘Holgaart’ effect which was already available. I chose this effect because I felt it portrayed the feel of a very loud noise due to the red and blue tints and the slightly doubled composition.

I created the effect on this photograph, taken with the same camera as the previous image, by also using befunky.com. I changed it to black and white and increased the saturation to make the colours oppose more. I then added a ‘line artopia’ effect which made the photograph look slightly cartoon-like which I thought would appeal to the audience. After I added the photograph to my word document, I used the software on there to remove the background to make the outline fall around the guitar player.

DOUBLE PAGE SPREADStandfirst font is from microsoft word, I decided to take a font from here because I wanted a classic, timeless yet masculine font, which is very common and was readily available without having to search exterior websites. I also highlighted the masthead in red on microsoft word to make it stand out more.

The same font appears in the kicker, pull quote and photograph caption to create a classic, continuous theme.

The coverline; “Stanhope or No Hope?” is written in font that I found on fontspace.com. I went though extra effort to find an appropriate font since it larger and will be attracting more attention.

The font I eventually found was found through searching ‘metal’ in the themes bar which as well as reflecting on the genre, was also suitable for what I wanted to use it for.

For my double page spread, I photographed my model using the same camera as the photographs taken for my contents page. This meant I was able to achieve the same quality photos consistently.

In post editing, I used befunky.com again and also used the Holgaart effect which I have used previously. I used this again because I felt it created the desired effect and was also effective in my double page spread, due to the amount of detail it created and the double composition.

Other effects included the black and white and also increased saturation to create the same, more intense opposing colours.
