What is AED?
❖ National pre-health professional honors society❖ Pennsylvania Beta Chapter at Penn State❖ Caters to students on career paths toward:
➢ Medicine➢ Dental➢ PA➢ Nursing➢ And many other health related fields...
Benefits of joining AED
❖ Access to information and advice regarding entrance into health care careers
❖ Opportunities for volunteering and community service ❖ Job-shadowing and research resources❖ Nationally recognized involvement in campus activities ❖ Leadership opportunities (officer, committee head,
subchairs, etc.)❖ Improvement of PSU committee recommendation letter
What are meetings all about?
❖ Speakers➢ Hear about the careers, glory, and struggle of the medical field from real
physicians, etc. (great for networking)➢ Insight into medical schools/prep
❖ Committees/Community Service➢ These make the club work!➢ Community service is an integral part of AED
❖ Preparation➢ Learn what it takes to be a health professional and develop personal goals.
Membership
❖ Three types of membership:➢ General Member: attends meetings, involved in committee work➢ Distinguished Honors Member: active member, meets honors
requirements (5 service points)■ Benefits: Honors title on resume, wear honors cords at
graduation, name recommended to Pre-health evaluation committee, stronger medical school committee letter
➢ Nationally Inducted Member: 3.2 GPA requirement (cumulative and science GPA), one-time fee, 3+ semesters at Penn State■ Benefits: Considered member of national Alpha Epsilon Delta
Premedical honors society, access to scholarships and all other national opportunities, eligible to be an officer
How to reach distinguished membership
❖ Complete 5 service points➢ Attending particular events (TBA)➢ 3 hours of volunteering = 1 service point (up to 3)
■ volunteer.psu.edu➢ Completing 2 committee points➢ Driving for canning trip➢ Attending weekend trip (non-THON committee)
❖ 1 Committee point (Blood Cup, Social/PR, THON this fall)❖ 1 Meeting attendance point (75% of meetings)❖ 1 Social point ❖ 1 Canning point (does not have to be with AED) ❖ Complete 10 THONvelopes
Blood Cup Committee - Leah, Brooke, Ece ❖ The PSU-MSU Blood Donor Challenge is a competition between Penn State and
Michigan State to see who can collect the most blood during three weeks in November.
❖ The AED Blood Cup is the “challenge within the challenge,” during which Penn State organizations compete against each other to see who can donate the most blood.
❖ As a committee, we are responsible for promoting the event at the Homecoming Parade with the SRCC.
❖ At the blood drives, committee members also help successful donors sign the Blood Cup book so that their donation can count towards their organization.
❖ Committee members celebrate the event a banquet during which winners are announced in December.
THON Committee -Jordan, Alanna, Nishil❖ World’s largest student-run philanthropy (over $13 million
last year alone)!
➢ AED has raised over $35,000 in one year alone thanks to all of you!
❖ THON benefits the Four Diamonds Fund
❖ Canning, THONvelopes, alternative fundraisers, Family Carnival, THON socials, THON weekend
❖ The Torres Family! Children of all ages :)
Social/PR Committee - Derrick, Eduardo❖ The Social/PR committee is responsible for planning all social
events for the organization. These include: Parties, hayrides, tailgates, dinners, etc…
❖ The committee will work with our PR chair to help design, promote, and advertise our meetings and events.
❖ We collaborate with Blood Cup and THON committees in planning and advertising related events.
I am a Freshman now, what should I do? ❖ Get involved from the start!
❖ You can get 4 full years of local honors membership
❖ Make Penn State feel a little smaller by making a new group of friends!
❖ Meet fellow classmates
❖ Meet upperclassmen “mentors” who can help with advice for the Penn State experience
How can sophomores, juniors, and seniors stay involved?❖ Be actively involved in a committee
❖ Help w/ Events
