Community Service –

Covers For Kids (CFK)

Melanie Reimann 1st VP - Community Service

I hope you are healthy and sewing at home like me! Are you making some tops or quilts for Covers for Kids? We would love to see them at our next meeting! Show them and then donate them. Rhonda will have the CFK Challenge packets of fabric ready at the May meeting. Please email her ([email protected]) if you would like to get a packet. (Editor’s Note: See Rhonda’s article on page 15) At the March meeting we received 20 finished quilts and 20 tops that need quilting. We will also be distributing the quilts that were displayed at the show this month. So, in total, the Dallas Child Advocacy Center will receive 21 quilts, Ronald McDonald House will receive 21 quilts, and Vogel Alcove will receive 21 quilts. This month’s free workshop certificate goes to Lu Peters, who graciously sewed on bindings for the quilt show workers to stitch down. Her work is so appreciated along with everyone who contributes to this amazing project! The Covers for Kids Workshops are scheduled on the last Saturday of each month at the Hobby Lobby near Firewheel Town Center. The address is 3178 Lavon Drive in Garland. We begin around 9:30 a.m. and it is a come and go event. We meet in the classroom on the right side of the store. You can bring your machine to sew or help iron. We have a good time each month and would love to see you there. Our next work-days are April 25, May 30, and June 27, 2020.

A big shout out and thank you to Patrice Aldrich. Patrice requested a grant from herorganization,Marsh&McLennan,fortheQuilter’sGuildofDallas.Inreturnforhereffort,theGuildreceived$500.Thankyou,Patriceforthinkingaboutus.ThemoneywillbeputtogooduseforCoversforKids.

Membership Peggy Cord

2nd VP - Membership

It seems ages ago that we had a wonderful speaker at the March meeting telling about the history of cotton and the new ways of raising and processing it. I enjoyed it many many times more than I thought I would. Thank you to our stores that contributed door prizes: Blue Ribbon Quilt Shoppe, Memories by the Yard San Antonio, and Stitched with Love. Hear Yea! Hear Yea! Hear Yea! We are in need of a Database Chairperson or persons. This person would be very familiar and comfortable with Excel. Our database is an Excel spreadsheet we access through Dropbox. Judy Kriehn has filled this roll for many years and has recently stepped down. I am very thankful for her diligence and her willingness to take me under her wing and explain the ins and outs of Excel and Dropbox. Give me a shout out if you are interested or want more information.

The Beehive Martha Smith

The Latest Buzz … from the Beehive We welcome all of our newest “bees” to the Hive! If you recently joined the Guild, please come by the Beehive (one of the tables at our monthly meeting) and introduce yourself. We have a special gift for you. At the monthly meetings (1st Thursday of the month) you will see how really buzzy we are and how YOU can “plug in” to any of the activities that speak to you. Whether at the Covers for Kids area (making, finishing, or just donating fabric that can be used in “kid sized” quilts), learning new techniques at the educators table, signing up for the next workshop, or helping me at the Beehive, there’s plenty you can do. We encourage you to find a Friendship Group, which are smaller gatherings of quilters who live nearby, and find out what’s going on in your area. Congratulations to Nancy Evenden, our March winner for the Hidden Word game. See below for an explanation of our game! I’m sure you have questions. Please call me and I will try to get the answers! Really, we’re here for you.

The Hidden Word Game

The game is played by locating a word that totally does not belong (is out of context) in a quilting newsletter. The word was selected by myself and placed somewhere in the body of the monthly newsletter by the Editor. Hidden Word players will tell me the Hidden Word at the next monthly meeting and by doing so, receive a “special” door prize Ticket. The drawing for this Door Prize will be at the end of the meeting. -- Martha Smith

Lesson of the Month

Virginia Hauer 7th VP - Education

NO LESSON OF THE MONTH IN APRIL SINCE THE GENERAL MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELED.

Nominating Committee

Ann West

Now is the time that we should all come together as our Guild needs us more than ever. This year we are looking to replace the following positions in the Quilter's Guild of Dallas, Inc. for the year 2020-2021:

• President • 2nd VP – Membership • 3rd VP - Programs/Workshops - looking to fill 2 positions working

together • 7th VP – Education • Secretary

We need volunteers to fill the above positions. Please contact Ann West or Richard Larson regarding filling these positions. With everyone's help, we can make our 2020-2021 year a great one in spite of all the obstacles put in our way!

2020 Dallas Quilt Show

Cindy Matthews 6th VP - Show Chair

The Dallas Quilt Show 2020 will go down in history as the Show that Wasn’t. Wow … What a week it was! As things heated up with the corona virus, we were preparing ourselves for lower attendance levels, but I would never have dreamed that we would be shut down before we even got one day under our belts. I can’t say enough great things about the Show Committee. Once we knew that the show had to be shut down, everyone banded together to get the job done in the most efficient and effective way possible. We were all out of Market Hall by 5:00 p.m. on Friday. So what’s next? As expected, we’re gathering the financials and trying to figure out the correct way forward. Making decisions about Advance Tickets (see bottom of page 6), Sponsorships, and Vendor booth fees. Many have asked if we will reschedule the show. The answer to that is ‘no.’ The logistics, vendors, Market Hall, etc., will just be too much to schedule, in addition to preparing for 2021. We also have a good balance of shows in the metroplex through the year and moving our show may have negative impacts on another show. Many thanks to those that worked so hard to get pictures posted to the website and Facebook pages so the beautiful quilts of the show could be seen by all. (links are included at the end of this article).

2020 Dallas Quilt Show

continued from page 4

Canceling the show ranks in my top ten for “Hardest Things I’ve Had to Do.” I know how hard we work to put this show on, and how exciting it is to hear that statement on Friday morning over the loudspeaker: “It’s 10:00 a.m. and the Show is now Open.” We had stated that we would follow the City of Dallas’ guidelines, and when they made their ruling on Thursday night, we had no other choice. I appreciate everyone’s support and their words of encouragement. Our wrap-up meeting will be Tuesday, April 21, 2020 at the Best Little Retreat Center in Texas. As expected, we will cancel if the virus threat is still looming. And with that, I’m officially handing over the reins to Lut DeMeulder, who will lead us into Dallas Quilt Show 2021! WE HAVE A WINNER!!!

Even though there was no Quilt Show going on at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2020, doesn't mean we didn't have a raffle quilt drawing. The lucky winner of our beautiful quilt is Romona Vaughn of Flower Mound. Romona was shocked to hear that she won the quilt and said she never wins anything. Congratulations Romona, we hope you enjoy the quilt!!

Miniature Quilt Auction

Virginia Hauer

As you know by now, the mini auction did not happen. We will hold the current minis and use them in the 2021 auction. We will continue with the same beneficiary, Life Restoration, for 2021. I thank those who donated mini quilts, and we will do it again next year.

For Advanced Dallas Quilt Show Ticket Holders

We will honor the 2020 Dallas Quilt Show Advance Tickets at the 2021 Show. No refunds will be issued. We are aware that not all will be happy with this decision and we sincerely apologize. Over 35 stores in the DFW area are gracious enough to sell tickets for us, and we do not feel it would be right to ask them to handle refunds, especially in light of the hardships the stores are facing at this time. Be kind to your local stores and don’t forget to give them your support!

Texas Association of

Quilt Guilds (TAQG)

Sherry Worley

As many of you already know, the Member Guilds are voting to determine if TAQG will continue past 2020. The Member Guild votes will be taken at the March 31, 2020 meeting. There is a good chance that the 2020 Rally Day will be the last. Marti Michell was the first Rally Day speaker 20 years ago and will possibly be the last Rally Day speaker. Rally Day is free to anyone who would like to attend so please come join in the fun. Sherry Worley will have the 2020 Rally Day pin, and lunch tickets for sale at each guild meeting. Please see Sherry, at the Programs table, for more information. If you are considering participating in a workshop with Marti Michell the information is available at http://www.taqg.org The quilt presentations at Rally Day 2019 sparked a great interest in Quilts of Valor. Because of this TAQG has issued a challenge to all of the Member Guilds. TAQG would like for each guild to make at least one Quilt of Valor. The Guilds that will be displaying their 2020 Raffle Quilts are also asked to display one Quilt of Valor beside their raffle quilt. Those Quilts of Valor will be donated on that day. If anyone would like to make additional Quilts of Valor they will be donated within the state of Texas to help reduce the wait time for a quilt and to reduce the number of Veterans waiting for their quilt to be awarded. For additional information on Quilts of Valor please visit their website at https://www.qovf.org

Pie Town, New Mexico Quilt Pie Town is a small town in western New Mexico that was on the road taken by many who were escaping the Dust Bowl on their way to California during the Depression. Pie Town and its people were photographed in 1940 by Russell Lee a photographer for the Farm Security Administration of the United States Government during the Great Depression. One of the founding settlers of Pie Town was Harmon L. Craig who moved there in the 1920s. He met his wife, Theora, when she brought food from town to feed hungry cowboys who were working a roundup for one of the ranchers. She had been cooking and doing laundry in the Hall Hotel in nearby Magdalena. Theora had been abandoned by her first husband who left her and their two daughters when he fell on hard times in business. After their marriage on July 29, 1924, Mr. Craig brought his family to live in a cabin he had built in Pie Town. A small log café was built onto the house which Theora managed while H.L. was building other businesses in town. The family states that interviews with New Mexico residents at the time document that their pies, cakes, and cookies were famous for a hundred miles. Cowboys on long cattle drives began to plan routes to include a stop for a rest in Pie Town just so they could have a slice of pie and a cup of coffee.

continued from page 8

Although others have claimed the title, Theora’s descendants claim she was the original Pie Lady of Pie Town. H.L. Craig was instrumental in the development of Pie Town, often interviewing people driving through who were escaping the Dust Bowl. If he liked their work ethic, he would offer to help get them started if they would settle in Pie Town. The images of Pie Town taken by Russell Lee document the hard life of its residents and their determined spirit. Many of the residents were photographed wearing garments made of printed cotton feed sacks, and those images were included in the museum’s recent exhibit on feed sacks. The family says that Theora loved her garden more than quilting, but she left behind a beautiful charm quilt that she made to keep her family warm. Typical of many quilts made at this time, this one employed a wide variety of scrap fabrics cut into large hexagon shapes.

You then will make a child-size quilt for one of our charities. It will be due at the September 2020 Guild meeting. Voting will take place that evening, winners announced, and the quilts will be held for display at the 2021 Dallas Quilt Show, then donated to a local child. The packets are only $5 and you get your money back when you turn in your completed quilt. For more information or to reserve a packet, please contact Rhonda Anderson at [email protected]. The packets will be available at the May Guild meeting but I will do my best to get you a packet sooner and you can get started early!!! PLEASE SPECIFY: A – PINK, B – GREEN, or C – BLACK AND … 1 – BLACK STRIPE or 2 – WHITE STRIPE Fabric is Wool Ewe by Ink & Arrow for Quilting Treasures.
