Tuskegee Airmen rap by Jazzy Ice Tuskegee Airmen rap by Teshawn Scott

Dear Tuskegee Airmen,

Hello Tuskegee Airmen, my name is Marcus Watts. I like historical things like your story and history is my favorite subject. My classmates and I have learned a lot about you and your struggles World War 2 with all of the racist segregation laws within the past 2 weeks. My classmates and I have been learning about what your role was and why you were able to fly planes. In that period of time you were like a test dummy, just to see if African Americans were able to fly a plane. You’ve flew over 1,500 missions in Europe, you were vitally important to the war to be treated as objects when returned home.

We all thank you for your bravery. We have made different things commemorating what you have done for America. Like raps, poems, judicial arguments, posters and many other things. I myself have made a rap regarding how hard it must’ve been living in that day and age. America would not be the same without your diligent service in World War 2. We are very happy that you took the chances you did to make America better in the future.

I just wanted say thank you for all of the things you’ve done for us. You took chances when the people you took chances for weren’t willing to do the same things for you. You were diligent with your work and protection when you would never receive the same back and we thank you for that work you did for your country who didn’t respect you back.

Sincerely, ~Marcus Watts

PROFILES OF TUSKEGEE AIRMEN: WILLIAM P. ARMSTRONGClass 44-H-SE 9/8/1944 Flt. Officer T66139 Providence, RI

It is an unfortunately reality of war that oftentimes loved ones do not come home. No matter the skill or training, many service members of World War II perished in combat. William Armstrong did not live to see the Allies liberate Europe, but his efforts as a Tuskegee Airmen pilot, and citizen who stepped up to service his country, played a role in that success.

Born October 24, 1924 in Washington, DC, Armstrong was raised along with his sister Evelyn in the west end of Providence, RI by his mother, grandfather and stepfather. He excelled in academics, was a member of the student council and lent his beautiful tenor voice to the Episcopalian Church of the Saviour. His peers described him as handsome and outgoing.

After graduating from high school in 1943, Armstrong’s plans to pursue the education needed to become an attorney we derailed by the War. He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps and was accepted into the pilot training program in Tuskegee. He graduated with class 44-H-SE on September 8, 1944, earning his wings to

fly single engine fighters against the enemy in Europe. Armstrong deployed with the 332nd Fighter Group to Ramitelli, Italy shortly thereafter.

During his time in theater, Armstrong flew bomber escort missions over Europe, protecting American bombers from enemy fire as they dropped their explosive payloads over targets deep within Nazi territory. The skill of Tuskegee Airmen like Armstrong to keep their bombers safe and able to complete their missions earned them the nickname “Red Tail Angels” and were requested by the bomber pilots to escort their missions, regardless of the color of the skin. This was a remarkable acknowledgement, considering the climate of racial injustice that existed in that era.

On Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945, just a month before victory would be declared in Europe, Armstrong’s squadron was engaged by German aircraft in an air battle over the skies of Austria while trying to return from a bombing raid which Armstrong and his fellow Airmen had provided escort protection. 12 German planes went down in that battle, as well as two American aircraft. Armstrong’s plane was hit, and he was killed in action, along with Tuskegee Airmen pilot Walter Manning in another plane. Armstrong’s body was unable to be recovered before the end of the war.

Due to the tenacity and insistence of his stepfather, Nelson Venter, Armstrong’s remains were located in a grave in Austria, and returned home in March of 1950 for burial in a family plot in Providence. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Air Medal and Presidential Unit Citation.

The local VFW post of his hometown dedicated a memorial in his honor in 1946, but was eventually lost due to redevelopment in the area. He was inducted into the Rhode Island Aviation Hall of Fame in 2009. In 2010, the William P. Armstrong Memorial Square was given a fresh update and re-dedicated with much local fanfare in Providence.

In memory of the service and sacrifice of Flight Officer William Armstrong.

Handkerchief featuring the World War II Double V campaign design

Submitted by:Collection of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture

Location:Washington, D.C.

About:In early 1942, the Pittsburgh Courier, the nation’s most widely read black newspaper at the time, proposed the idea of the Double V campaign. This idea and symbol aimed to support the war efforts while continuing to call on the government for equality and justice for all black Americans. Because a large portion of the county’s population did not have full and equal civil rights, there was a fight to be fought on two fronts – the war abroad and the injustice of racism and segregation at home.

OUR SQUADRON IN THE NEWS

IN YOUR WORDS

The students and myself found the entire experience educational and fascinating. If t had not been for your RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit many would have never known the importance of the Tuskegee Airmen. ~Rhonda Broiles

My uncle “Buddy’ was a flight engineer - Top Turrent Gunner - B17G, 8th USAAF. He flew 34 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross. He had friends who had the Tuskegee Airmen Red Tails as escorts. At first they were unsure of a black squadron, but later they were SO glad to see the P51s! With the Red Tail escorts they did not worry so much about the ME-109’s or Fw-190’s. He was with the 92nd BG(H) 325th Squadron. Believe me more than once he wished you were their escorts! His crew used up and wore out five new B-17G’s from fighter damage and flak, My uncle had a saying about the Red Tails, “White, Black, Brown or Purple - at 25,000 feet you didn’t care when 20mm cannons ripped through; just hoped the escort could help.”

Thank you to all the Tuskegee Airmen for the lives you saved. Please, please help all children undersatnd the sacrifice some of those pilots made to keep this country FREE!

God Bless you all! ~Clayton Bergman

I was really excited to see your exhibit at the air show. I am currently a student pilot. The reason I wanted to see the theater is for one, I am a huge fan of the P-51 Mustang. Also, I saw the movie “Red Tails” a while back and was really intrigued by the movie. I felt as if I was part of the Tuskegee Airmen when I was in your theater, and it made me really appreciate it more. I greatly appreciate it, and it is definitely inspiring me to pursue my future to become a pilot. I will get to where I need to be, just like the Tuskegee Airmen did to help secure our freedom. Thank you for the chance to be with y’all. ~ Cory Gillespie

William T. Coleman Jr., who championed the cause of civil rights in milestone cases before the Supreme Court and who rose above racial barriers himself as an influential lawyer and as a cabinet secretary, died on Friday at his home in Alexandria, Va. He was 96.

Blue skies...April 9, 2018

Tuskegee Airman Charles Joseph DorkinsClass TE-45A Date of Graduation March 11, 1945

SN: 0841269 2LT.

Born in Baltimore, MD to Christopher Columbus and Athie Gertrude Dorkins on December 16, 1922, he was one of four children. The youngest son and the 2nd youngest of the siblings. He was a Tuskegee Airman, photographer/cinematographer and author.

For more than fifty years, from 1956, Charles Dorkins spend every day, as a filmmaker, in New York City’s Times Square. He migrated to Manhattan after his WWII service as a 2nd Lieutenant and a B-25 pilot in the new legendary Army Air Force unit: “The Tuskegee Airmen.” After his experience as a Tuskegee

Airman, he devoted his career as a photographer and filmmaker. His first big project that introduced him to the world was as the photographer on a “round-the-world mission of cultural sharing”. A mission of Americans of various races and nationalities sponsored by the United Nations in which Charles met several world leaders, such as Nehru and the Shah of Iran.

A career as a military or commercial pilot did not attract him, so he proceeded to establish a stellar reputation for his outstanding work as a photographer and moviemaker – in all departments. This type of career in film production was an “East Coast” achievement. Following his award-winning documentary in the early 1960s for NBC about the revolution in the then Belgian Congo, in which he lived with the revolutionaries and was injured, he has many adventures traveling, producing and filming non-documentary films (i.e., A black film production of Hamlet, shot in the Bahamas) as well as documentary film work.

There are too many notable documentaries produced, filmed and directed by Charles: a look into the real life and character of the black neighborhoods of Detroit in the late 1960s (film commissioned to show the real human side of life to the rest of the world, particularly the white suburban population during the peak of racial tension in the 60s); a documentary on the Tuskegee Airmen which started with recollections of the airmen at an anniversary gathering; and a privately commissioned documentary about life, land development in the Amazon jungle by one of the wealthiest entrepreneurs in the world.
