Seeking God Through Christ ~ Growing in Spirit ~ Welcoming All!
r e s b y n e w s
A time of new beginnings and new ways to serve Dear Friends,
The month of February brings about
some new beginnings. The members of
the Class of 2017 are completing three
or six years of serving LPC as a Deacon
or a Ruling Elder. We thank each one
for their service.
Deacons: Steve Arnold, Peter Davidson,
Walt Gower, Geri Stromquist, Don
Uttley, Sandy Uttley and David Wicker.
Elders: Cindi Baker, Jill Christie, Roger
Kurrle, Jim Tonkin and David Uttley.
It’s not that they are entering retirement,
but all of these officers will be finding
new ways to serve God and our Church
Family.
This means we have a new class of offi-
cers, who are beginning their service.
On a Saturday retreat, all of our officers
will worship, plan, and be in fellowship
to begin this year of service. Please
keep these officers in your prayers.
February 14 may be a time to begin a
new phase in your relationship with that
special person – it’s Valentine’s Day –
but it is also Ash Wednesday. This is
the beginning of the Lenten Season, a
time to truly enter a new phase in your
relationship with our Redeemer and
Lord. A special worship service will be
held in the sanctuary. This is a time of
reflection and prayer. The Lord’s Sup-
per will be celebrated and the imposi-
tion of ashes is offered.
The ashes are from the burning of palm
branches that were used on Palm Sun-
day, a time that Jesus’ entry into Jerusa-
lem was celebrated. The ashes remind us
of the reason that Jesus entered Jerusa-
lem. He did so out of great love for each
one of us.
May we begin this season of Lent offer-
ing our lives in a new and special way to
our Lord. Let us pray for one another, so
that we all may grow in our relationship
with our Lord and in our relationships
with one another as the Church of
Christ.
In Christ,
At the Annual Meeting on January 21,
we elected new Elders and Deacons
for the classes serving through 2020
classes.
Joining the ranks of Elders are Bonnie
Best, Krista Mattila, Sue Strohman,
Don Uttley, and Jerry Walls.
The Deacons class of 2020 includes
Sue Arnold, Steve Arnold, Walt
Gower, Heather Jarvis, Rachael
Kacer, Tim Kacer, and Jim Tonkin.
The ordination/installation of the new
leaders will take place during worship
on February 4.
New Officers elected The Learning Circle will be meet-
ing February 4 and 11 at 8:45AM in the
church lounge to complete the DVD
study The Jesus Fatwah: Love your
Muslim Neighbor as Yourself. For the
last two sessions, “Making Connec-
tions: Non-Muslims & Muslims,” we
will talk about building relationships
across lines of faith.
Beginning on March 4, the Learning
Circle will begin a 6 session DVD se-
ries based on the book Surprised by
Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resur-
rection, and the Mission of the Church
by N.T. Wright. We meet the first and
second Sundays at 8:45-10:00AM in the
lounge, except in April, when we will
meet on the 8th and the 15th.
All are welcome to join. Please come as
many times as your schedule allows.
You may order a book and read along
with the study, order a participant's
guide, or just come and listen to the
DVD and follow-up discussion. The
Learning Circle is 16 years strong and
provides a great small group opportu-
nity.
Please contact Paige Mellinger at 218-
525-5852 or [email protected] if you have
questions.

On Sunday, February 4 the youth will be collecting money
after worship to support local food shelves.
The Officer Retreat will be held
on Saturday, February 10. New
Deacons and Elders, please take note
of this date. We will meet at the
Center for Spirituality and Enrich-
ment, located in the St. Scholastica
We want to give our warmest thanks to
members of the LPC Choir, Con Brio
and Learning Circle for the beautiful
Christmas floral centerpiece and most
generous gift card. This was a complete
surprise to us and we are very touched
by your thoughtfulness.
It gives us joy to open our home for
choir and Con Brio potlucks in May and
December, as well as the Learning Cir-
cle breakfast potluck in Septem-
ber. Your cheerful presence in our home
is gift enough, but we thank you again
for your friendship and your generosity.
Gratefully,
Kay and Walt Gower
LPC Friends,
Thank you for your kindhearted
thoughts and prayers following Bruce’s
death. Your support and love at this
time is a great comfort and greatly ap-
preciated.

passed away on
December 24,

service was held in

January 27.
Cultivating our faith life is an important
part of wellness. Here are a few ways to
gain new perspective of yourself, others
and God throughout the year (from the
Church Health Reader, chreader.org).
1. Try praying at different times dur-
ing the day. You may notice that
you pray differently at different
times of the day.’
2. Laughter and rejoicing need to be a
part of our faith life. Think of
something funny that has happened
and thank God for giving us humor
in our lives.
3. Loving yourself is the first step in
"Love your neighbor as yourself."
Spend a few minutes writing about
what it means to love yourself.
Remember that God loves you.
4. Meditation or listening is a part of
our faith life that we often neglect.
Consider taking five minutes to sit
quietly and breathe. Try to quiet
your inner voice and just listen.
5. Go for a prayerful walk and re-
member that all of creation belongs
to God, though it can be easy to
forget that. The air you breathe and
the ground you walk on belong to
God.
6. Pray a movement prayer. Stretch
out your arms. Touch your toes.
Stretch your neck. Feel the bril-
liance in God's creation and the
way that your body is put together.
7. Thankfulness comes in a variety of
forms. Each day, make a list of
everything that you encounter for
which you are thankful. At the end
of the day, incorporate the list into
a prayer.
As I lay in a bed for two months I did
some of the above. When you feel you
are alone, which I did, God is there; you
just have to seek and find him. I was
very thankful for my cousins and school
friends who helped me through that
period. I am very grateful for the care
boxes and cards that I received from my
church family.
Life is good again. Doug and Kirsten,
Greg and Tamra, Kyle and Kathleen,
and Rachael and her family have been
very supportive. This encourages me to
give to others through my Parish Nurse
Ministry. I am homebound for physical
therapy for the month of January. I may
not be knocking on your door, but I still
have a phone! I would welcome your
calls and concerns.
In Christ's love,
