Full of Grace: The Vision Dear Friends,

Over six decades ago, the community came together to fund and build Mater Dei High School. They felt so strongly about the importance of a Catholic high school that they were willing to sacrifice to make Mater Dei a reality. These people left an incredible legacy of Catholic education from which thousands of students have benefited. We are responsible to continue the work of those who came before us.

Mater Dei has made a significant impact by producing graduates that have become leaders in their communities, churches, and families. Our students continue to have impressive achievements in academics, service, athletics, fine arts, and other activities. In recent years, we have achieved new standards of academic excellence identified on the School Profile (located on the previous page). We also anticipate an enrollment increase in future years. Despite these incredible accomplishments, we are challenged to provide for the next generation of students.

The Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign is the result of careful planning for the current and future needs of Mater Dei. The Board of Trustees and leadership of the school are confident that this campaign will enable us to improve quality of educational experiences for all students and help us attract new students. These projects will specifically achieve the following results:

1. Enhance academics and spiritual programs2. Improve facilities and curb appeal3. Invest in cost savings measures4. Increase accessibility and affordability5. Provide long term financial viability

The Full of Grace Capital Campaign will enable us to take a giant leap forward in providing quality experiences for the students of today and tomorrow. Just as the community came together to build Mater Dei over sixty years ago, your bold and enthusiastic support of Catholic education is needed now. To learn more about the campaign, we strongly encourage you to attend the upcoming public events and to contact the advancement office with questions. Please reflect on the positive impact that Mater Dei has made on your life and the lives of young people and prayerfully consider how you can advance the mission of Catholic education.

Join us for the Community Kickoff Wednesday, September 18, 2013, at 6:00 p.m. in the Kempf Auditorium. New details and plans will be announced for the first time that evening.

To Christ through Mater Dei,

Jim Will, Sr. ’51, 1933-2013By Sarah Wagner ‘88

In the fall of 1949, James L. Will entered Mater Dei High School as a junior with 416 other new students. Since construction started, Jim helped Msgr. William Lautner, Mater Dei’s first Superintendent, paint, caulk and prepare the new building. One of Jim’s favorite “Fr. Lautner stories” tells of the time “Fr. Bill ran off a union man trying to make trouble for us boys working on the building since we weren’t members of a construction union.” Fr. Lautner, and many others at Mater Dei, made a deep impression on the young Jim Will.

Jim met classmate Eileen Berendes at Mater Dei. They dated during high school and were part of a large group of students who had “the most fun any high school kids had, before or since,” according to Eileen. They went to dances at the SHEHEHESHE and served together on the staff of the weekly student newspaper, Hi-Lights. Jim, the 1950 editor, was allowed to take Fr. Shetler’s car to drive and solicit for newspaper ad business. Jim’s skills as a salesman made him successful in his early career in ad sales. In 1951, Jim and Eileen both graduated from Mater Dei High School.

They married in 1955 and began a life together. Jim took his sales skills and founded the James L. Will Insurance Agency. He was very active in civic service to the Evansville community. He and Eileen managed to be involved in Resurrection Catholic Church, Boys & Girls Club, Birthright, University of Southern Indiana, West Side Nut Club, and many other civic and professional organizations, all while raising five children. When first born Jim, Jr. came along, Jim started calling himself “Old Man Will.” Shortly, four daughters joined the family and life was full. The Will’s maintained their commitment to Catholic education and soon all five children graduated from Mater Dei: Jim ’76, Lynn ’78, Leann ’82, Lauri ’84, Lesley ’87.

Fast forward to retirement and days filled with grandchildren, volunteer work and golf. In the spring of 2012, a network of volunteers was developed for the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign, and the first people mentioned as potential campaign Honorary Chairs were Jim and Eileen Will. As they accepted the role, their enthusiasm, effort and spirit were contagious. No one could listen to Jim talk about the future of Mater Dei and the Full of Grace campaign and not be inspired. In meetings and presentations about the campaign, Jim was the “closer.”

Sadly, on Memorial Day weekend, May 25, 2013, Jim passed through this life and walked into heaven’s big golf course in the sky. How fitting his final days were spent working to benefit the high school he loved. Jim’s commitment was deep; his mind was sharp and forward thinking; his spirit was wise yet young; he was the youngest “Old Man” you ever met. The Full of Grace, Excellence for Tomorrow’s success will be a tribute to Jim and all the people who have given the same level of enthusiasm and energy to Mater Dei High School.

Please follow Jim’s example and participate in the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign.

We truly believe that it is our responsibility to afford a Catholic education to our current generation, as well as those in the years ahead.

It is so very important today more than ever that our children have the opportunity to grow in their spiritual and moral values. Full of Grace: Spirituality

Christ is the reason for Mater Dei High School

Catholic education is a gift passed on from one generation to another. Students at Mater Dei attend Mass monthly, participate in prayer services, and visit the school chapel as a class frequently. Every school day begins with prayer.

Students and faculty strive to build a faith community based on Gospel values and service. We respect the dignity of all within the local community so as to go forth and serve those in the global community.

Mater Dei recognizes that Christ is the unseen, yet always present spiritual guide in our classes and daily activities. Students and faculty are challenged to be

members of the community who make a difference through charity and service to those who need it most.

Your gift to the Full of Grace Capital Campaign will support the mission of Mater Dei High School to educate young people in the faith and prepare them for the challenges of a morally complex world.

Full of Grace: The Projects

8 Red & Gold Special Edition 2013

The ProjectsProjects and programs identified for capital improvements in the Full of Grace campaign are the result of long range campus planning, extensive interviews and research, and the educational, social and spiritual priorities of Mater Dei High School.

ACADEMICS: $705,000

At Mater Dei High School, the importance of academics and life-long learning is stressed every day. Annually, the greatest percentage of our finances is spent on the salaries and benefits of the faculty and staff which enable our students to receive a top quality education. Previous campaigns have provided for a six-classroom Science Center, Business &Technology Centers and a Main Office Suite. The Full of Grace capital campaign will build upon these improvements.

• Media Center expansion and renovation

• Resource Program expansion and renovation

• Technology hardware, software and infrastructure improvements

• Teacher Advancement Fund

• Art Department renovation

FACILITIES: $1.3 million

Mater Dei High School, designed and constructed in the late 1940s, prides herself on the extended use of materials and facilities well beyond when other institutions would rebuild and replace. In time, new research and technology can enable a new project to actually reduce fixed costs, improve efficiency and enhance safety and aesthetics. This campaign offers the community an opportunity to improve on the function, efficiency and form of the facilities and areas we use such as:

• Public and Student Access Restroom Renovations and Additions

- Main boys and girls restroom renovation

- New handicap accessible restrooms on the Main Gymnasium ground floor

• Campus entrance enhancement

• Redesigned campus drive in/out Harmony Way

• Convent and housing removal

• Energy efficiency indoor lighting, HVAC sensors kitchen appliances

Mater Dei’s Resource Program assists students in their academic pursuits through special education accommodations, testing resources, study aids, differentiated instruction and one-on-one tutoring.

Technology upgrades include new computers, servers, and wireless system upgrades.

The Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign will enhance all aspects of the Mater Dei experience. From the moment a student, parent, fan or visitor arrives on campus, they will see and feel the impact of this campaign. All areas of our mission – academics, social, service and spirituality – will be improved. The mark the Full of Grace campaign makes on Mater Dei High School will be a legacy left in the mind and spirit of all future graduates.

Circle of Faith Prayer GardenThe Circle of Faith Prayer Garden is an extension of the Msgr. Wolf Chapel and will be a visual and spiritual reminder of the foundation of faith which strengthens Mater Dei High School. Located on the northeast side of the building, the circular design will follow the curve of the walkway to the northeast and main entrance to school. Four areas, or quattuors, will fit together forming a cross and a brick pathway and seated area will provide space for commemorative honors. Trees and foliage will create a quiet and reflective spot for students and adults alike.

“ Throughout its rich history, our community has risen to the occasion countless times by contributing their time, talent and treasure to meet the needs of Mater Dei. We are part of the next generation whose duty it is to build upon the strong foundation established by these loyal supporters in order to assure that Mater Dei continues to provide an outstanding faith-based education.

We are passionate in our belief that a Catholic education is one of the best ways to assist parents in their vital role of preparing their children to be successful in our challenging and rapidly-changing society.”

Social/Extracurricular: $2.36 million

At Mater Dei High School, more than 4 out 5 students participate in an athletic activity. If extracurricular activities are included, this number increases to 9 out of 10 students. For the first time, athletics, extracurricular and campus green space functions will be enhanced by efforts in the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow campaign through:

• Athletic Fields – On Campus

- Dedicated Baseball Field

Mater Dei Tuition Assistance Fund - $500,000

Catholic education is one of the primary ways we can grow in faith as individuals, families and as a Church. To offer this opportunity to everyone, sometimes assistance is necessary and to achieve this goal, the Full of Grace campaign will create:

In 2012-2013, more than $200,000 in tuition assistance was provided to 80 recipients at Mater Dei High School. This represents 16% of the student body. The purpose of the Tuition Assistance Fund is to increase the resources available to assist more families wanting to attend Mater Dei High School.

Visionary Projects

Many projects and programs have been identified during the feasibility and research phase of the campaign. Some were not able to be included in the primary projects of the campaign, but are still important to the long range plans of Mater Dei High School. These were identified as Visionary Projects and include:

• New 6-8 lane track

• Parking expansion

• Main Gymnasium air handling

• Technology hardware, software and infrastructure

“ This campaign will enhance the academic, spiritual and extracurricular experience for students while also enabling more students, regardless of financial status, to attend Mater Dei.

At Mater Dei, excellence is a result of hard work, zealous dedication, visionary planning and a deep abiding faith. Over the years, sacrifices were made by countless people to give us the school we have today. Today, it is our turn to be a part of adding to this rich tradition of excellence.”

– Gil and Marcia Jochem Full of Grace Campaign Co-Chairs

The following is a tentative timeline for completing projects identified in the capital campaign. Mater Dei is committed to completing projects as dollars are available, and we will not assume any debt as a result of this campaign. Donors are able to restrict their gifts to specific projects. If a project is fully funded, it may be moved ahead of schedule.

Mater Dei High School is grateful for the generosity of all who contribute to the campaign through their time, talent, and treasure!

froM tHe BiSHop“Catholic education at Mater Dei High School is known for its excellence in academics, discipline, and even athletics. Despite any and all success in these areas, the ultimate value of the school is the transmission of faith. Our Catholic faith is meant to be lived in and outside of the classroom. We are blessed to have Mater Dei as a part of the educational mission of the westside parishes. I ask for your prayers and encourage your generous support of this campaign.” – Most reverend charles c. Thompson, D.D., Jcl Bishop of the Diocese of Evansville

$ 3.3Million Raised

Our Goal:$ 4.6 Million

16 Red & Gold Special Edition 2013

As you prayerfully consider the options for supporting the Full of Grace: Excellence for Tomorrow Capital Campaign, please reflect on the positive impact that Mater Dei has made in your life, in the lives of family and friends, and in the greater community. Support of this campaign can extend that impact to a new generation of students and families.

Gifts are tax deductible and may be committed over a five year pledge period.

Cash GiftsCash is the most common way to give. Gifts can be made by cash, check or debit/credit card donations (Visa, Mastercard). Many employers will match your gift to Mater Dei High School.

Gifts of Securities (Stock or Bonds)A gift of appreciated securities is one way to make a significant contribution at a reduced cost to you. Federal tax laws allow a charitable deduction for the full market value of the securities on the date of your gift.*

Gifts from IRAIn 2013 the Federal Government, through the American Taxpayer Relief Act of 2012, extended the benefit of making charitable contributions directly from an Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to a qualifying organization, such as Mater Dei High School. The amount of the contribution will not only be received in full (with no income taxes removed), but count toward a person’s Required Minimum Distribution (RMD) in 2013, if 70 ½ years of age or older.*

Gifts of Real EstateA residence, vacation home, farm, acreage, or vacant lot may have appreciated in value, so its sale may mean a sizable capital gains tax. Gifting the property eliminates this tax and allows the donor to receive a charitable deduction for the full fair market value of the property.

In Kind Gifts If you would like to support one or more of the projects with your time and talent, there may be opportunities to help. We are in need of various products and supplies to complete many of the campaign projects. In addition, opportunities to volunteer as a skilled worker exist throughout the time frame of the campaign. Companies are also encouraged to consider support of the campaign through labor or materials.

For more information on how you can support Mater Dei, please contact Dr. Timothy A. Dickel, President, at [email protected] or Sarah Wagner, Development Director at [email protected] or (812) 421-5727.

* Security (stock or bonds) and IRA transfers are simple transactions

through Mater Dei High School’s Hilliard Lyons account. Please

contact the Mater Dei Advancement Office, 812-421-5727, to discuss

your plans and receive details on how to make your gift.

Planned GivingRegardless of how you choose to support the Full of Grace Capital Campaign, you are invited to support Mater Dei through planned giving.

You can help support Mater Dei through bequests, endowments, charitable trusts, annuities and life insurance. Many planned gifts do not have a minimum contribution amount. A planned gift will qualify you for membership in the Ave Maria Society, the Mater Dei Planned Giving and Endowment Society.

How Can I Help?

Special Edition 2013 Red & Gold 17

“My family sacrificed to grant me the privilege to receive a superlative education at Mater Dei. My teachers, coaches and administrators inspired me to cultivate knowledge that I utilized throughout my academic and athletic career, and to this day, in everyday life. They provided the values and laid the foundation to pursue excellence and succeed at the highest level in all activities. For this I am truly grateful. To ensure that this premier quality of education continues into the future, the Capital Campaign is essential to continued success, in both academics and athletics, at our beloved Mater Dei. This is why I have and will always support this outstanding institution.”

– Matt Kiefer ‘02

“I very strongly believe that the faith-filled education that Mater Dei provides is invaluable. Students learn in an environment that nurtures and deepens their faith and are taught to be service oriented throughout their adult lives. The discipline required for students to succeed at Mater Dei helps them cope with the challenges they encounter in the world of work and in their family life. Mater Dei grads have distinguished themselves as leaders in their communities and in their professions, a trend that will surely continue with the excellent education that the school offers and which the campaign makes possible for more students for generations to come.”

– Sister Mary Carmel, OSB, Principal at Mater Dei 1968 -1981

“I am not an alumnus of Mater Dei, but I have six brothers and one sister who graduated from Mater Dei. I am a product of Catholic schools having attended St. Wendel Grade School and St. Meinrad for high school. I have always been a supporter of Catholic schools. During my 16 years at Resurrection, I had a lot of wonderful experiences with Mater Dei, and that’s why I continue to support Catholic education and Mater Dei High School.”
