Rotary Noon Meeting Oct 19, 2017

Good fellowship, spirited singing and an interesting and informative program highlighted this week’s noon meeting.

Guests this week were: Jan Mark from Helsingborg, Sweden, who brought a flag and an invita-

tion to visit; Denise Springer from the DAY and guest of PDG Gerry; Kris Ufomaduh, who is set to be inducted this week; and Our speaker, Tom Althuis and his guest Leah Naber.

The New London Homeless Hospitality Center sent a thank you letter for our sponsorship of their annual walk to end homelessness.

A sampling of coffees from Rwanda, compliments of our newest-to-be member Kris, will be a part of the October 26th meeting.

Opportunities exist to participate in a Habitat Build Day in NL, to be included in the Rotary table at the Crawford award ceremony for Bill Stanley on Nov. 6 and at the Relief for Puerto Rico fundraiser at Ocean Beach on Nov. 16.

Caleb announced that the musical programs at the Community Meal Center funded by the NL Rotary Foundation are a huge success.

PDG. Gerry presented Alex Marku with two Paul Harris Distinguished Ser-vice awards. The first was to acknowledge and thank him for his annual thousand dollar contribution to the International Rotary Founda-tion. The second was a club awarded Paul Harris Distinguished Service Award in appreciation of his serving as chair of the Centennial Playground committee, his donation of the Buon Appetito Pizza Truck, pizza and staff for the last several Brewfests, his attendance at several Rotary Interna-tional Conventions and his other work on behalf of the club. This brings Alex’s total to four Paul Harris awards.

John Bysko introduced our program, “Milestones in Pfizer History and Growth,” presented by Dr. Tom Althuis, retired director of science policy, Groton and NY Headquarters. He led us through the nearly 170-year his-tory of the company from its founding in 1849 in Brooklyn as a chemical company up to the present with sales of $52 billion, doing business in 180 countries, with more than 360 drugs marketed worldwide, 96,500 em-ployees and an R & D budget of $7.5 billion.
