It gives me great pleasure to announce that The Penn Club has once again been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Gold Club of the World award, determined by the annual Clubs of the World award program conducted by Boardroom magazine. It is one of the most respected trade publications serving private clubs. The award program uses a club-specific rating system that recognizes the club, its management, and its staff based on a proprietary criteria and evaluation process that distills and measures a clubs member experience. I am very proud of the entire team here.

Our catering office has come up with an “outreach catering program.” We will be contacting members, who have had business and social events at our facility, to remind them that we are ready to plan and throw amazing events for them and those they know. Whenever you or someone you know is thinking of hosting an event, Club members are asked to think first about hosting your event at the Club house and encourage family members, co-workers, and friends to host their function at our beautiful facility.

This is a wonderful way for members to support your Club. Members can sponsor events for their guests so that they have access to our Distinguished Gold Club, delicious dishes, and fine service by our Club catering department. Your guests can pay for their event on their own (you need not pay for their event nor be present at the event).

As part of our outreach, we are looking to connect with event planners within your firms and those you know so that we may introduce our venue as an option available to them. Even if you are a non-resident or international member, if your company has events in Manhattan, please contact [email protected] with your company’s events coordinator information. Your referral would be most appreciated, and we will be sure to make you proud of your recommendation.

On behalf of the entire Penn Club team, thank you and happy spring!

—R. Mark Jezierski

“Each One, Reach One” RecognitionThe Board of Directors would like to thank and recognize the following Penn Club members who took the call to reach one (or more!) of their contacts to become a club member. All members are encouraged to strive to have your name noted on this list as we continue our 20th anniversary membership campaign through 2014.

A Dangerous Woman: e Life, Loves, and Scandals of Adah Isaacs Menken (1835–1868) |America’s Original Superstar (Globe Pequot 2011)

Monday, April 21st. 7:00 p.m. Come attend this presentation of great substance that beautifully tells the story of Adah Isaacs Menkan. is is a modern biography of the celebrated performer, poet, and feminist icon who lit up the Victorian world. Menken was the most prominent actress in Civil War America, an active participant in the struggle, and a pivotal gure in the history of entertainment. Feast your eyes on the superb period photos of Adah by Napoleon Sarony, the Rembrandt of the Camera, who brings to life Adah’s journey.Born in antebellum New Orleans to a Creole woman of color, Adah’s father was Jewish,

her stepfather Irish; she was multicultural and multilingual before the fashion. A staunch defender of the Jewish people in poetry and the press, Menken also stood up for her gay friends, including the much derided Walt Whitman. A shooting star, in her brief life Adah went through ve husbands and was admired by the celebrities of her time—from Mark Twain to Charles Dickens. Adah wrote the fi rst woman’s confessional, no-holds-barred poetry, and her book of poems, Infelicia, is still in print. On-stage, Adah’s sensational act as Prince Mazeppa, the freedom ghter against Tsarist tyranny, prefi gured the marriage of sexuality, action, and special e ects found in today’s movies and television. Moreover, much of the revolutionary activity in today’s world is pre gured by Adah Menken in her life and stage dramas.Presently, America is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. Adah Menken, with her southern roots and Union sympathies, is emblematic of a con ict that worries the nation to this day. e star of a drama about emancipation wildly popular from coast to coast, Adah was once arrested as a Confederate spy! e presentation graphically illustrates a life as fresh and compelling as today’s headlines. e Presenters:One of Professor Barbara Foster (Associate Professor at Hunter College) and Michael Foster’s previous published book is THE SECRET LIVES

OF ALEXANDRA DAVID-NEEL: A Biography of the Explorer of Tibet and Its Forbidden Practices (Overlook Press, third edition 2008). Secret Lives has been published to considerable acclaim in the U.K., Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Slovenia, and S. Korea. With a foreword by Lawrence Durrell,  e New York Times “Bear In Mind” column called

it “a wonderful biography,” and it was chosen as one of the best all-time books by  e New York Review of Books. e Fosters appear frequently in the U.S. and abroad and have packed auditoriums from Harvard, Yale, and Princeton to Washington’s Smithsonian to Cal Tech. $24 per member and $34 per guest plus tax and service charge for reservations made by Monday, April 14th. $34 per member and $44 per guest plus tax and service charge for late reservations. MEMBER SPOTLIGHT Nancy EvansSchool, Class Year: Alas, I didn’t attend Penn. I did undergrad at Skidmore and Wesleyan and grad school at Columbia. My daughter Samantha Wishman is Penn ’10 and my Dad was Wharton undergrad.Penn Club Member Since: 2010Hobbies: Gardening and horseback riding. In one sentence, what do you actually do all day in your job? After a career in publishing (Editor-in-Chief of Book-of-the-Month Club, President of Doubleday), I started iVillage in 1995 when people didn’t know what the Web was and since it sold to NBCUniversal, I’ve been helping start ups. What do you like most about your job? at I can really help companies gure out their mission and get started smartly. I always tell them whatever money they’re thinking of raising, double it.Why did you join the Penn Club? e Penn Club sent a brochure suggesting club membership as a graduation present (very smart!). When my husband and I toured the club for our daughter, we found out that as parents we could join. e Club seemed so friendly and was such a good midtown location that we decided to join too. What do you often do at the Penn Club? Meet friends for a drink sitting in front of the replace in the library. Incredibly civilized! What is your favorite Penn Club dish? Sushi in the Grill Room.If you were a crayon, what color would you be? I’m a color freak, so I would take the whole 64-crayon box.

Which reciprocal clubs have you visited and loved? One of the best perks of membership! Love the Racquet Club in Philadelphia (great place to stay for parents) and the Reform Club in London. How has being a Penn Club member benefi tted your life, professionally? I met with Sean Casey, who worked with me at iVillage and who happens to be a Penn alum, in the Business Center. He was showing me a platform he was creating to monitor social media tra c around TV shows. It was that day that I fi nally got what he was doing and I invested in his start up. And I’m glad I did: In less than two years, he sold the company to Nielsen. How has being a Penn Club member benefi tted your life, personally? I’ll tell you: Every time I come to the Penn Club it just makes me happy. Th e bartender in the Library is always welcoming; Tony knows your name when you go to the Dining Room; and Bonnie takes care of you down in the Grill Room.Do you have any advice for new Penn Club members on how to best utilize the Club? Just remember what a great place it is to meet up with friends or colleagues, for drinks, lunch and dinner. e more you use it, the more you appreciate what a gracious venue it is. And if it weren’t for the Penn theatre evenings, I wouldn’t be seeing half as many plays as I am.
