RackTools Stencils and Master Shapes Stencils: A stencil is basically a library where master shapes reside (a collection of master shapes). RackTools stencils mirror the product families in the Middle Atlantic Products catalog: Enclosure Systems, Enclosure Options, Data Cabling Management, Power Products, Security Consoles, Studio Products, Video Monitor Mounts, Accessories, and Custom Rackshelves. Additional stencils provided are Middle Atlantic Products logos and extras. Select a stencil by clicking on the stencil title bar. Each Stencil also contains a General Hardware, Rack Hardware and Line Item shape. General Hardware links to common accessories like rackscrews. Rack Hardware links to the most common rack hardware items, such as caster bases and ganging hardware. The Line Item Master Shape is used for invisible accessory options that are not represented by a master shape, and are specific to the stencil where it is located (items in Accessory Line Items are different from items in Enclosure Systems Line Items). These three shapes are represented on the drawing by a simple box containing the selected part number. These can be put off to the side of the page if the user does not wish for them to be shown on the printout of the final drawing.

Master Shapes: A master shape is a graphical representation of an item (in RackTools, shapes represent specific product types). Most of the rack enclosure shapes have been engineered to have connection points at precise 1.75” spacing. This allows exact placement of rack components at even rackspace increments (identifiable by the blue “x”). The blue “x” denotes a Visio connection point. If you can not see the blue “x” on your drawing page, make sure that the Connection Point toolbar is active by going to View >> Toolbars >> View and making sure View is checked. The shapes that will connect to the Enclosure Systems are programmed to snap into place at the blue cross connection points. When a shape is connected properly, a red block appears at each connection point. If you do not see the red blocks, go to View >> Toolbars >> Snap & Glue. Once a shape is properly connected, it will stay with the Master Shape (eg: you can move a rack on the page and all attached accessories will move with it).

Custom Rackshelves Stencil The Custom Rackshelves stencil contains Master Shapes representing the most common types of electronic components. All of these shapes are linked to the extensive Middle Atlantic custom RSH database. Choose the shape that most closely resembles the component you are specifying, and it will scale to the size of the component you select from the pop-up list.

Data Cabling Management Stencil All of the shapes in the Data Cabling Management stencil allow for easy specifying and configuration of the extensive line of structured cabling products.

Enclosure Options Stencil The Enclosure Options stencil contains the most frequently specified options for Middle Atlantic Enclosure Systems, including doors, side panels, and top options.

10

Enclosure Systems Stencil Enclosure Systems contains the entire catalog of Middle Atlantic enclosures. Each shape represents an entire family of components. Every shape will configure to size automatically, based on your choice of model number.

Extras Stencil The Extras stencil contains easy-to-use dimension markers and Middle Atlantic Products logos, as well as the RackTools Title frame that automatically configures to the page size on drop. The Customer Supplied shape can be used to describe any non-Middle Atlantic Product on the project.

Power Products Stencil This stencil contains the complete line of vertical and horizontal power strips. Note: the vertical power strip drawings do not accurately represent the number of out lets per strip. Please right click the shape and select “view RackTools shape data form” for a correct description.

Adding Products To The Drawing Page When RackTools opens, you will see a group of pre-defined stencils (product categories) on the left side of the screen. Inside these stencils reside the Master Shapes representing product families. To open a stencil, simply click on the stencil title bar. To begin your drawing, select a product family icon and drag it to the drawing page. To drag and drop a Master Shape from the Enclosure Systems stencil on the page, left mouse click on the shape, hold and then drop the shape where you want it on the blank page. Select the proper model from the drop down dialog box. If any accessories have been specified for this product, an accessory dialog box will pop up. Choose the accessories you would like to add by checking on the box, or press cancel. Enclosures, Security Consoles, and specified accessories will automatically be drawn on the plan view page, as well as the elevation view page. The product that you selected will appear on the page. Specified accessories will automatically drop on the drawing as a group. To move them after they have dropped, click on a blank spot of the page to de-select the group, then select each one individually and place them where you wish. HINT: when adding sidepanels to a rack by choosing them from the Rack Options stencil, position the master shape so the sidepanels are justified to the bottom of the rack. When you select the correct size from the pop-up list, they will draw to the correct size and snap into place automatically.

Next, decide what additional components you would like in your rack. Accessories such as blank panels can be found in the Rack Accessories stencil. Select the icon and drag it into the rack, and choose the exact model from the pop-up window. Notice that the shape glues itself to the proper rack spacing increments in the rack, and draws to the proper size. HINT: when adding accessories to a rack, position the master shape so the top of the shape is justified to the top of the rackspace desired. When you select the correct size from the pop-up list, the shape will expand downwards to the correct size as necessary.

Additional drawing pages may be added by inserting a page from the “Insert” menu. Note: in order for RackTools shapes to work properly, all pages must include the TitleFrame master shape. This shape is located in the Extras Stencil, and will automatically configure to the proper page dimensions on drop. When a new page is added, both elevation and plan view pages will be shown. Specifying RSH Custom Rackshelves RackTools includes the entire Middle Atlantic Products custom rackshelves measured unit library. Master shapes located in the Custom Rackshelves stencil represent the most common types of electronic components. To specify a custom rackshelf, begin by selecting the master shape that most closely resembles the unit you are specifying, and drop it on the drawing page. For example, to specify a custom RSH for a VCR, first select the Custom Rackshelves stencil. Next, drag and drop the VCR shape on to the drawing page and place it in the rack. Notice that the shape glues itself to the proper rack spacing increments in the rack. Then, select the proper manufacturer and model of the component that this rackshelf will hold. The shape and shelf will grow to the proper rack units automatically. Experiment with some of the other stencils. To remove a shape from the drawing, simply highlight it and use the Delete key. The dialog box below allows you to specify either the anodized or the textured finish. When you click “OK”, the “add accessory” dialog box will appear where you can specify the clamp option if required. HINT: when adding RSH rackshelves to a rack, position the master shape so the top of the shape is justified to the top of the rackspace desired. When you select the correct unit from the pop-up list, the shape will expand downwards to the correct size as necessary.

Adding a New Measured Unit to the RSH Data Base From time to time you may need to specify a component that is not included in our database. In this case you will need to measure the component (for instructions on how to properly measure a component, select the “RSH Page” from the Extras stencil and drop it on a blank page). This page can be printed out for future reference. To add a unit that to the database that you have measured yourself, first select “Add New RSH Components” from the RackTools main menu. The following dialog box will appear:

Next, select “New, and the following form will appear. Complete the form with the specific manufacturer and model information. All height, width and foot dimensions must be accurate to 1/32”; depth should be accurate to within 1/8”. MEASURE CAREFULLY - RSH units are custom made and non-returnable. Using the dimensions provided in the manufacturer’s user’s manual or specification sheet is NOT recommended. If you are unsure about the measurements, the component can be shipped via insured UPS to Middle Atlantic, where it will be measured accurately and returned.

The save button stores all the data you have entered and adds it to the RSH database, making it available for use on future projects and to the “user-supplied dimensions” report. You can also delete and edit user-created components with Add New RSH components.

RackTools on Drop Events When a RackTools Master Shape is dropped on a drawing, a number of preprogrammed events are triggered. First, a dialog box will pop up, asking for the desired model of the unit. You can select any model in the master data table that is linked to that particular shape.

If there are no accessories attached, the Master Shape will automatically re-configure based on the specific model you chose. If there are accessories attached, you will see the following dialog box. This box prompts you to choose from the pre-determined accessories. To add the desired accessories to the drawing, check the box next to the part number. Note: some accessories will be invisible on the drawing, but they are still associated with the master shape and will appear on reports.

View Accessories

An accessory is any related product that you want to be included as an associated option of a Master Shape. The View Accessories menu item allows the user to View, Add or Edit any of the accessories that are linked to each Master Shape. For example, if you add an AXS rack system to a drawing, the tracks will be available as part of the system on drop. The Delete Accessory button will delete the accessory from the drawing and the database. You can use this to customize the accessory function for your own needs. The Edit Accessory button allows you to edit any chosen accessory attached to a shape.

Add Accessories – Advanced Users To add an accessory to a Master Shape, press the Add Accessory button. The following form will pop up:

First, select Master Table, where the data is stored. In this example, the Rack MT Power Table has been selected. Choose the part number you want to attach to the Master Shape from the drop down list. Select the correct stencil and then the proper matching shape. You will find the following items on the Add Accessory screen: • X and Y location - this defines where the shape will drop on the drawing. The default setting is 0,

which drops the shape in the middle of the Master Shape. Shapes can always be moved at a later stage in the design process.

• Recommend box - checking the Recommend box will check the Accessory Option box automatically

when you drop the Master Shape. This is a good practice when you want a particular accessory option to always be added automatically to a specific enclosure option.

• Visible - when Visible is checked, then the item will be visible on drop. If left unchecked, the item

will be part of the project and shape but will not show on your drawing. To remove an invisible item from a drawing, use the View Accessories command and uncheck the box or delete the master shape. All accessories stay with the master shape.

• Prompt - If the Prompt check box is unchecked then the accessory shape will drop automatically.

Main Menu Items All RackTools Main Menu Items are available on the Main Menu under the RackTools Menu. On most systems, the Main Menu will be displayed to the left of the Window menu item

Reports Before you can generate a report from a drawing, the drawing must be saved. Good file management technique suggests a separate folder for every project. You are only required to save a project once, the program will auto-save for a subsequent changes.

The report dialog box lets you select reports as well as the page you want to report on. Four report choices are available: • Quote (retail) -- shows the list prices of each component on the drawing. • Purchase Order Request (dealer only)-- provides Dealer Net costs. This report generates a purchase

order. • Customer Supplied Dimensions -- includes RSH detail, providing component dimensions of all new

custom rackshelves needed on the project. • Non-Middle Atlantic Item Report -- details all non-Middle Atlantic Products used in the project. You can also filter reports by page. This function allows the user to create different rack systems on different pages and generate separate pricing options. Using the Visio Menu >> Insert >> Page command, the user can add and name as many pages as needed for a specific project. See the Visio user’s guide for more information on adding and editing pages. When you are ready to print your report, the printer drop down dialog box allows you to select from any printer that you have installed on your PC or network.
