MPR2000 Data Record/Playback System
The MPR2000 Data Recording/Playback System is a critical part of the radar/sensor network
by ensuring the data, regardless of its specific format, is properly received from remote radar
and sensing sites for processing and viewing at other locations. Additionally, it is also highly
desirable for equipment used in radar networks to provide such features as data record,
playback, protocol conversion, and time stamping.
The MPR2000 System provides users with a solution that offers all of these capabilities while
also providing the ability to easily transport the radar or sensor data received on the serial ports
over IP networks to one or more simultaneous end points at remote locations for further
analysis. Additionally, the MPR2000 provides the ability to add application blades such that
data analysis can be done within the MPR2000 itself.
The Data Record feature provides the ability to store received data as raw (idles, sync, flags
and CRC) or in payload form, time stamps can also be included in the captured data. The
capture time window and length of time to keep the data can be easily specified by the user
through the system configuration interface.
The MPR2000 Data Playback feature allows the user to view the previously captured data
as a source for analysis or transmission to other locations. Multiple playbacks can be
simultaneously running with the playback data for each playback request being distributed to
a specified link on the MPR2000 System and/or user application connection. The playback can
also be configured to send the file data to all destinations in real time, slowed down, or sped
up.
Utilizing a web-based user interface the MPR2000 System simplifies set-up, configuration,
monitoring, and maintenance for the user. These capabilities apply to the system as a whole,
as well as the specific serial ports (links) which are controlled by the Radar/Sensor Protocol.

Managed WAN Gateways
PT’s Managed WAN Gateways are higher density servers with remote management and high
availability features. What used to require a full rack of equipment can now be accomplished
by using a single Managed WAN Gateway (MWG) from PT. Based on industry-standard
CompactPCI® architecture and Linux® software, the Managed WAN Gateway supports both
module hot-swap and remote management of all major functions in a single chassis.
Open Architecture
The CompactPCI mechanical design and PICMG® 2.16 interconnect allow the addition of
third party CompactPCI hardware for specialized processing or interface requirements. Also
available is a two position PMC/PTMC carrier module, which allows two PMC modules to be
added in place of one of the communications modules. This increases operating efficiency
while also reducing the number of unique spares required.
Remote Management
The MWG can be monitored and managed locally or remotely via Ethernet from any location
by using PT’s Intelligent Shelf Manager (ISM). A highly programmable device, the ISM
automatically monitors power, thermal, and operational conditions in the chassis, and reports
chassis status both locally and to any selected remote monitoring locations. Additionally, the
ISM provides Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) information, including serial number,
hardware/software revision levels, and status for any module installed in the chassis. The ISM
can powercycle any individual slot or the entire chassis.
All management functions are controlled by a fully featured Graphical User Interphase (GUI)
or via the Command Line Interface (CLI).
Figure 10: Managed WAN Gateway Solution
17TECH BRIEF - MAG Radar & Sensor (August 2010)
Managed WAN Gateways
Communications Modules
At the heart of the system is the eight-port intelligent communications processor. Each
communications processor includes eight serial ports, two Ethernet ports, and multiple WAN
protocol stacks running onboard. As a CompactPCI® module, replacement is done as a card
swap (hot-swap) with no cabling changes required.
Hot-Swap
Should a communications module or power supply fail, a red “fail” LED will appear on the
module, and the ISM will notify the system manager of its condition. A local technician can
remove the failed module and replace it without powering down or even interrupting the
remainder of the chassis’ normal operation. The ISM will detect the replacement, initialize
the new module, and place it back online automatically. In addition, the failed module’s FRU
information can be saved to aid in implementing repairs.
Speed and Reliability of IP
The Managed WAN Gateway acts as an IP server and allows data to be accessed from IP
Ethernet clients by using PT’s powerful set of APIs that are available for Linux®, Windows®,
and Solaris™ operating systems. Through cost-effective and reliable transport over IP, client
systems and workstations have remote access to this data. Users deploying PT’s APIs can
collect and process data, archive, overlay, formulate response, send back, and other data
commands. Furthermore, the gateway includes tools for logging, alarming, diagnosing, and
troubleshooting such items as the shelf environment, power, and individual boards.
PT provides a GUI for displaying all collected data, which can be accomplished remotely via
Ethernet to the gateway. This extended shelf management combined with the redundant
cooling, power, and hot-swap capabilities saves on systems maintenance and improves
reliability and uptime.
Protocol Software
The MWG is fully compatible with NexusWare® WAN software. NexusWare WAN software
products are offered as installable software packages for NexusWare Core (a comprehensive,
highly integrated, Linux development, integration, and management environment) or as turn-
key packages for developers interested in the protocol package by itself. Whether the
installable or turn-key solution is chosen, developers will be provided with a well-documented
and powerful API to assist in the development process. Communications processors can be

configured with a complete set of protocol software installed. This includes HDLC, SDLC,
x.25, Asynchronous Data Transfer, and our complete set of radar receiver and sensor proto-
cols for a wide variety of commercial systems and military radar systems.
High Availability
The 4U MWG includes three power supplies in an "N+1" configuration. Should any single
power supply module fail, the third will take over the load, and the chassis will continue
normal operation. The MWG also includes dual Ethernet uplinks with failover for redundant
IP connections. In mission critical applications, the use of dual 4U MGW will ensure complete
redundancy. Another high availability option is the 7U MWG which provides four redundant
power supplies (N+N), dual Ethernet switches, and dual ISMs for "five-nines" (99.999%)
chassis reliability.
