I would like to extend a warm welcome back for the start of Term 4 to all members of the Radford community. I hope you had an opportunity to spend some relaxing time withfamily and friends over the vacation period and are now ready to face what is arguably the busiest term of the year. As well as the myriad of end-of-year functions, preparations for the upcoming year continue in earnest in Term 4, with finalization of staffing, the production of a timetable and the development of the College Calendar.
Over the holiday period I had an opportunity to join two groups of Year 10 students involved in two quite different overseas adventures. The first part of my time away wasspent with the French Exchange Tour. Over a couple of very memorable days, I joined 22 students and 3 staff as we explored the sights of Paris. Although the excitement ofexploring such a fabulous city was clearly evident from the students’ demeanour, for me it was wonderful to observe our students speaking confidently, deciphering menusand reading maps, all in French.
Radford staff and students on the French exchange tour, enjoying a taste of "la vie parisienne"
Later that week, Ms Jen Bateman (French Teacher) and I ventured down to the Loire Valley where I met the Principals and senior leaders of the two schools with whom wehave an exchange arrangement. These French Exchange Tours, which have now been running for a number of years, are dependent on a shared and commonunderstanding of expectations between the schools. It was therefore good to be able to express our desire for these exchange programs to continue into the future and lookto secure an ongoing relationship with the two schools in Segré and Le Mans.
By the end of that week, the students and the other staff had made their way down to Le Mans and were settling into life with their Host Families. From all accounts, the timespent at the school was extremely profitable and only served to further reinforce their understanding and fluency in French. Their trip concluded with another couple of days oftouring along the coast before heading back to Paris to catch a flight home.
Meanwhile I flew to Bhopal, India, to join the Radford delegates at the 2014 International Round Square Conference. Our group consisted of three Year 10 students, ourRound Square Representative, Ms Beth Girvan and the Chair of the College Board, Mr Ian Morison. The Round Square conferences are quite unique in that they have bothan adult and a student program running parallel with each other within the conference, coming together for keynote addresses, Barazzas (discussion groups), serviceactivities, meal times and some social gatherings.
Our students were amongst 360 student delegates from 51 schools from around the world. They were housed in dormitories at the host school, The Sanskaar Valley School, and were kept busy with an action-packed program that included activities relating to each of the Round Square IDEALS (Internationalism, Democracy, Environment, Action,Leadership and Service). All the students were deliberately “mixed up”, even in the dormitories, and by the end of the week it was very evident that many of them had formedlifelong friendships.
Following the week-long conference, our delegation joined up with another Round Square School, St Phillip’s, Alice Springs, to embark on a post-conference tour. Ouritinerary included a train trip from Bhopal to Agra (that was definitely an experience!), visits to the Taj Mahal and the Fort in Agra, the Royal Palace in Jaipur and the sacredGanges River in Varanasi. Once again, the students mixed well, further consolidating the friendships formed at the conference.
Round Square Coordinator Beth Girvan (L) and Principal Fiona Godfrey (R) with Radford Conference delegates; visiting the Taj Mahal at Agra.
In just two weeks’ time, Radford College will be hosting the 2014 Young Round Square Conference, which is designed for students in Year 5 and 6. Nearly 60 student
delegates from around Australia and South East Asia will be descending on Canberra for the four-day conference which will be conducted both at Radford and at the BirrigaiCamp. The program is an exciting array of activities, again aimed at the Round Square IDEALS and a focus on the development of Leadership skills. We look forward towelcoming other Round Square Schools to Canberra.
RegardsFiona Godfrey

Hope the holidays were a truly relaxing and refreshing experience.
We are perched on the edge of the end of another year. Already we have seen significant milestones and transitions, not the least being Peter Dodd’s leave-taking. My wifeSusanna, too, will soon be leaving Holy Covenant after nine years of outstanding service to the faith and local community. She now enters a period of discernment to seewhat her next steps will be.
Life is full of these transitions – our 9s will soon be embarking upon their rite of passage camp, our 10s and 11s feeling edgy about new possibilities and responsibilities, andour 12s no doubt anxious and excited concerning the big wide uncertain world that awaits them. Read more...

A funny but painfully truthful play.
It opens with a school performance of a Midsummer Night's Dreamand Shakespearean themes of suffering and reconciliation persist asthree families on separate holidays are drawn together by a storm.
For two decades audiences have been enthralled by this story aboutthe coming of age of both a group of individuals and the country inwhich they live.
Despite being set almost 40 years ago, this multi-award winning playis as relevant as ever with its themes of reconciliation and loss.

The P&F EXPRESS a guide to the outcomes and discussed issues/initiatives of latest P&F Management Committee 18 September 2014
Peter Dodd, retiring Director of the Radford College Institute and Head of High School attended the meeting. The P&F committee were glad of the opportunity to thank Peterfor his overall contribution to the school – over the last 29 years. Peter in turn thanked the P&F and spoke of the Committee's positive and vital contribution to the College, especially in terms of the funds raised that have/are put to good use. Peter, a guiding light to the Radford College Institute also spoke about how much he had enjoyed hiswork with the Institute and the interesting challenge of sourcing excellent speakers to present at the at the conferences, seminars and symposiums organized by theInstitute. He also hoped that under the guidance of Mr. Philip O’Regan there would be more opportunity to involve more ‘external’ presenters and the general public.
Celia Lindsay, Community Relations Manager and P&F Liaison officer reported that, in her extra role as Fete Convener, she was very fortunate to be assisted by “the world’sbest Fete committee”.
The P&F Fete presence: Yes, the P&F will be at the fete, in our new tent. We will be serving gourmet soup, handing out newly generated P&F information material, andinviting parents to chat. We will also be able to advertise the date for the 2015 AGM and will be lobbying for as many parent’s as possible to come to the next AGM and bepart of the many and varied new initiatives, currently being planned.
Mrs Godfrey spoke about:
The current enormous level of extra curricular activity going on at the school – i.e. sporting finals, concerts and parent teacher interviews, seminars andinformation nights.
Tenders will soon be closing for work on the new entrance. It is envisaged that the entrance will be operational in the new school year.
Also – all going to plan, the new Radford College website should go live early in Term 4.
Canteen reform: Roza Faunce who is the P&F representative for the ‘Fresh Tastes Action Team’ reported that positive progress had been made in finalizing the team’sAction Plan for the next 12 months. In a JS Bytes item last term, Nicole Jaggers, Fresh Tastes School Coordinator and Assistant Head of Junior School P-2, produced asummary of the work done so far and changes under consideration regarding the food sold by the College and provided for e.g. at sports carnivals and special events.
“Tips for Negotiating IT Management”: For those parents unable to attend the recent parent seminar Chasing Stimulus 24/7: Does you child need a lifestyleadjustment for improved mental health - presented by Gayelene Clews (Psychologist and Senior Counsellor) - you can access this very timely information sheet preparedby Ms Clews. It also contains both Study and Sleep tips.
The P&F Management Committee’s role is to work cooperatively with the College’s Board by providing a forum for discussing educational and general school matters, puttingforward suggestions, and providing feedback on proposed strategies involving things of interest to you as a parent. However, we realize that although interested in current school issues, the busy parents body would possibly benefit from an easily digestible mini dot point version of the keyissues discussed and addressed at each monthly meeting - via the weekly E-Bulletin.
The P&F invites and encourages all possible involvement/engagement from parents – i.e. questions, concerns, suggestions. Please contact the President, Hannah BaudertTo find out more about the P&F, you can click on to “Community” on the Radford web page, then Parents and Friends e.g. “who we are...” and “what you can do...”
