An image of the letter has been going viral on WhatsApp and Facebook, igniting heated discussions among social media users. According to the message, a ‘vigor- ous’ earthquake is about to hit the Indian Ocean which will the coastal re- gions of the Asian continent. Countries including India, China, Japan, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indone- sia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka and Gulf nations are said to be vulnerable. The message also states that these areas will also encounter a ‘seeshma’ storm that may strike with 120 to 180 kmph winds with heavy rain. B K Research Association for ESP is an organisation run by Babu Kalayil, a person who claims to possess the gift of extra sensory perception (ESP). Kalayil also claims to have predicted the major earthquake that caused the tsunami in December 2004, exactly two months before it occurred. He has said that he has a feeling that the Indian Ocean would witness a massive earthquake before 31 December and wants to warn the people of the impeding catastrophe. He also said that he has no intention to create panic among the public. When News Today contacted HOD of Geology at Anna University, L Elango, he refuted the claims saying, ‘They are just rumour and publicity mongers. They do not provide any scientific proof and we must learn to ignore them.’ An astrologer based in Anna Nagar though, has a different view on these predictions and about ESP. Wishing to remain anonymous, he said, ‘Aris- totle and Nostradamus from history are all seen as famous seers and philosophers who were able to predict the future hundreds of years ahead of their time. But if it is someone from our own land, he is seen as a fraud. This view must change. More research must be conducted on the paranormal and parapsychology.’ The University of Kerala in 2005 had granted permission to one of its senior professors, Renuka, to be a co-investigator in a project of the Department of Science & Technology under the Central Government. Renuka had back then said that Babu had predicted the presence of water on Mars, a month before a team of Hungarian scientists reported the presence of water on the red planet. Scientists at the Berkeley University of California had claimed to have discovered a new planet, 50 light years from the earth, in 2004. Babu had, in 1998, predicted the existence of such a planet. Predictions made on the basis of ESP usually do not have many takers, mainly on account of the fact that they are not supported by proper scientific data or established theories. Truth or not, Babu Kalayil’s recent prediction has given fodder for heated discus- sion to social media users. Nadigar Sangam general secretary and Tamil Film Producers Council president Vishal condemned TR for insulting the Kabali actress, which had left her in tears during a promo- tion of the movie Vizhithiru here. The incident happened on Thursday when TR launched a verbal attack on the actress for leaving his name out while thanking the people on stage. Even though Dhanshika repeatedly apologised and even fell on his feet, he continued his onslaught saying, ‘You haven’t come dressed in a saree and you are saying sorry.’ Hitting out on Rajendar, Vishal wrote on social media, ‘I strongly condemn Mr TR for continuously targeting Dhanshika despite the fact that she apologised to him and he could have avoided all this.’ He added: ‘Dhanshika apologised and even fell at Mr TR’s feet, after he pointed out that she missed mentioning his name. Condemning them, Vishal wrote, ‘Now coming to the point, both you boys, Vidharth and Krishna, I think you guys should have had the least bit of decency not to clap when your own co star was being bullied. Certain comments on the social media seem to suggest that TR has an internal animosity with Rajini which triggered the issue, since Dhanshika had acted with the superstar in Kabali.
