ESA Uranus Mission, DPS 2015 1 Ice Giant Workshop, DPS 2015
URANUS MISSIONS WITHIN ESA’S COSMIC VISION
Leigh Fletcher, Chris Arridge, Diego Turrini, Paolo Tortora. Nicholas Andre, Laurent Lamy, Mark Hofstadter, Richard Ambrosi and the Uranus Pathfinder Consortium
ESA Uranus Mission, DPS 2015 2
European Uranus Proposals• 2010: 1st Uranus Pathfinder Proposal (M3) • 2013: 3x Ice Giant science cases proposed for
L2/L3. – “Study of the icy giants to be a theme of very high
science quality and perfectly fi:ng the criteria for an L-‐class mission”
– “SSC recommends that every effort is made to pursue this theme through other means, such as cooperaAon on missions led by partner agencies.”
• Jan 2015: 2nd Uranus Pathfinder Proposal (M4) – High cost (>450M€), power/mass constrained – Req. NASA launcher/RTG – Long duraRon/low margins – European RPS deemed ‘unrealisRc’
• 2016: M5 Call for Proposals. – Down-‐selecRon ~ 2018. – Launch 2029-‐2030 – Explicitly menRons “proposing a mission with an
enabling contribuAons from a partner agency or ESA contribuAons to a partner-‐led mission.”

M4 Outline (Similar for M5?)

ESA M-Class Discussion Points• Power: European RPS development ongoing with
aim for flight instrument 2028. – European radioisotope producRon capability,
encapsulaRon technologies and safety, power conversion technologies (thermoelectric and sRrling) and radioisotope heater units (RHUs) aim for TRL4 by 2018.
– Current roadmap aims for TRL8 by 2028. – ConRnuity of funding is major risk.
• Cost Realism: – Bilaterals almost certainly necessary, req. inter-‐
agency discussions in short term. • InternaSonal CollaboraSon:
– Risk of ESA junior partnership in NASA mission. – Req. for NASA junior partnership in ESA-‐led mission
– commit to Phase A. – Challenges of ESA-‐only mission.
• Mee6ng of Uranus Pathfinder steering group with ESA at ESTEC, November 26th 2015.
