Clone Wars

Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number measurements; find missing values in the table; and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

Gladys: Working with this standard, students will need to draw on their prior understanding of the coordinate plane from 5.G.A.1 and 5.G.A.2.

Kevin: When students create ratio tables, they may initially use repeated addition to generate additional values for each quantity. Help them see that they can also generate values by multiplying the original ratio by various factors. Students should transition to view rows (or columns) of a ratio table as multiples of each other.

Megan: As students explore plotting on a graph the values in a ratio table, consider showing them how the original ratio appears as repeated horizontal and vertical movements along the line. This has strong connections to future work with rate of change and slope.

CLONE WARSWhat does their finished table look like?

When given new work tasks, Kellerman and Sharma like to get into “Clone Wars,” deciding how many clones of themselves it would take to finish the tasks. They often become obsessed with the “clone” scenario and can discuss it for hours.

They are currently having a clone discussion, trying to determine how many clones of themselves would be needed, given how many the other one would have.

Below is a section of the ratio table that they made to represent how many clones would be needed in different scenarios.

What does their finished table look like?

6.RP.A.3a

Make tables of equivalent ratios relating quantities with whole-number mea-surements, find missing values in the tables, and plot the pairs of values on the coordinate plane. Use tables to compare ratios.

APPLYING THE STANDARD

Axel was making his great grandmother’s famous cookies. He followed the recipe below. Complete the ratio table to determine the ratio between different ingredients.

1)

Frankie is looking to add to his fish tank. He has done some research and found that different fish require a certain number of cubic feet of water to thrive. Fill in the missing information in the ratio tables and then plot the ordered pairs on the coordinate plane. (Be sure to clearly label which line represents which fish.)

2)

Using the tables and graph from question 2, write a few sentences comparing the ratios of the amount of space needed for each fish. How is this shown in the graph?

3)

Kennedy thinks the best orange juice is made using 3 cups of water and 5 cups of juice concentrate. How many cups of water and juice concentrate will she need to make 40 cups of juice? Create a table or diagram to show your reasoning.

Here is how similar problems might look on a test.

fi sh require a certain amount of space to thrive. Fill in the missing information in the ratio tables and then plot the ordered pairs on the coordinate plane. (Be sure to clearly label which line represents which fi sh.)

How might this standard appear on a test?
