electrical interfaces and a perfect seal against moisture ingress. The elastomeric properties of the inner insulation layer of the joint body allowfor any cable diameter compensationand adjustment resulting from the loadcycling of the cable. At the same timethe two outer heat shrinkable layersprovide a tight and rigid belt for thejoint body representing a high level ofmechanical protection against outerenvironmental influences.

The Raychem Heat-Shrink Joint EHVSThe joint is based on a heat-shrinkdesign for voltage classes up to 72.5 kV.Polymeric insulated cables of variousdesigns can be adapted with respectto shielding and metal sheath. Ourheat-shrink accessories have beenused by utilities and industrial compa-nies around the world for more than35 years. This ongoing field experiencehas made TE Connectivity a leader in materials science and technology for high-voltage applications. The TE Energy materials technology is atthe core of the development of ourheat shrink joints. The materials usedin our cable accessories have beenextensively optimized with respect toproduct design and function, manufac-turing and expected service environ-ments. Furthermore the system is suitable for paper and polymeric cableconstructions and is also designed to accommodate modern jointingrequirements such as mechanicalshear bolt connectors.

Cable shieldingGrounding kits for commonlyused cable constructions likelead sheath, corrugated alu-minum sheath, copper tape, wire screens and combina-tions are available.

Heat-Shrink TechnologyThe conductive outer layer (1) togetherwith the insulating middle layer (2) represents the heat shrinkable hold outfor the inner elastomeric layer (3) of thejoint body. During the shrinking processthe stored recovery force of the elas-tomeric layer is released and adds up tothe recovery force generated by theheat shrinkable outer layers of the jointbody. The resulting high compressionforces as well as the perfect ability ofgeometrical adjustment provides tight

Size transitionThe size transition connectoris able to link cables with different conductor and/orinsulation diameter.

Cable insulation The joint is suitable to handlecables with different insula-tion layers like XLPE, EPR orPaper MIND.

ConnectorThe mechanical connectorwith torque controlled shear-off bolts is suitable for allcommon conductors madeout of aluminium or copper.A special connector construc-tion allows also the jointing ofcables with small insulationthickness.

Shield connectivitySolderless connections are used to connect the metallic –shields, -sheathsor –armours of the cables. The compo-nents continue the correct cross sectionacross the connection area, even for different metallic layers. In addition alayer of copper mesh is applied aroundthe joint, to assure safe contact andprotection.

Mechanical connectorThe mechanical connector is designedfor all common conductor types, madeof aluminium or copper.Bolts with a predetermined shear-offtorque ensure reliable contact and easyhandling at every installation.

Outer joint protectionA heat-shrinkable tube with a strongwall thickness and internally pre-coatedwith adhesive, provides the outer pro-tection and a lasting moisture sealing.

Electrical field control The stress control tube (1) has a pre-cisely defined impedance characteristicwhich smoothes the electrical fieldover the connector and cable screenends. High voltage insulating tube (2)

and the inner wall of the screened tube(3) restore the conductor insulation. The elastic memory of the heat-shrinkcomponents ensures the correct wallthickness is obtained.

Shield continuityShield break, straight through andgrounding connections are possible.
