    FORWARd

To t bov Sri Nisargaatta Maara

Rays o the Absolute: A Gita For Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj,

is an attempt to oer a song, prose, verses or sutras, tomy beloved Teacher, Guru and Spiritual Mentor, as a wayto honor him, (The Maharaj Principle) as the Absolute. It is with the deepest reverence that each sentence waswritten.

To My beloved Sri Nisargadatta Maharaj,

whose teachings have been with meand changed the course o this lie.

Some orty years ago, I longed or one document totell me the way it is. I always wanted to cut through allthe spiritual roundabout and be exposed to such a ormand Teacher. In the early 1970s, I read my rst copy o

the Bhagavad Gita, and rejoiced at its, beauty, I actuallyelt like Krishna was speaking to me, and it was all inone book. O course I came to realize that appreciatingand imbibing such a document was a lies work. By theearly 1970s, words o the Buddha rom the Heart Sutra,Form is emptiness, emptiness is orm, or the DiamondSutra, No being has ever entered Nirvana, began to all

into my hands at the now amous Bodhi Tree Bookstorein Los Angeles, Caliornia.

I began to antasize that more then likely theverses, gitas, sutras, etc, were attempts to write down inshort Zen like Koans, teachings that were brie sayings

as a way to remember and preserve the teachings as wellas the teaching style itsel.

By the middle o 1975, I was involved withchanting sanskrit verses which gave a way to remember, and arguably disseminate both teachings in a ormwhich was easy or disciples to participate in, as well assomehow meditative. Still the metaphors used sometimeshit, and other times missed my window. In 1976 I wasortunate to receive a copy o the now amous, I Am

That by my beloved Sri Nisargadata Maharaj. This bookwas a turning point as his words were short, sutra like, easy to remember, and carried with them the power oa Zen Koan. Moreover, the metaphor-pointers caughthold o me, like a virus .

    Maharaj used to say,

    Forget me,orget Maharaj,

orget the teachings,Stay in the consciousness and

your own unique path will emerge or you.

In this way Maharaj presented powerul sutra-like

teachings as an umbrella. He would present a conceptas a thorn to remove a thorn.

    To quote Maharaj:

My words i planted in you will destroyall other words and concepts.

So as not to recreate the wheel, Rays o the Absolutewas put together is an attempt to make available theteachings o Maharaj, in a concise, provoking, andmeditative way.

    RAYS OF THE ABSOLUTE.

A GITA FORSRI NISARGAdATTA MAhARA j

    The SONG OF The AbSOluTe

    INTROduCTORy OVeRVIeW

We come spinning out of nothingness, scattering stars like dust.

    Rumi

All that is heard is nonexistent.

Understand that there is nothing upon whichto refect. The knowledge o the nonexistence o

anything upon which to meditate is the prooundmeditation on the Sel. Abidance in the Sel, is to be

ree o all errors and all misconceptions.Sri Shankara

Nisargadatta Maharaj, stay in the consciousness as a portal to the

    All is an illusion,

    Stay in the consciousness,

Prior to consciousness will be revealed.

    Prior consciousness is the Absolute,

Nisargadatta Maharaj:All you can teach is understanding

the rest comes on its own.Discard all as not this not this, (neti-neti),

Be the consciousness, as the portalto the Absolute. All layers or veils are

consciousness to be discarded, The I Amand the sense o beingness is a temporary

state, Prior to them is the consciousness also

    called the Sel o All.

    NISARGAdATTA MAhARAj IN STAGeS

In the first stageThere is identication with systems, methods, paths, techniques, models, schools, and maps.

Nisargadatta Maharaj:I do not believe in spiritual paths

all paths lead to unreality ...Discard as not this not this.

    The second stage

There is identication with, thoughts, memory, emotions, associations, eelings, perceptions, sensations, the body, and the perceiver. ForNisargadatta Maharaj, you are not the mind.

Nisargadatta Maharaj:What you know about yoursel came rom

outside o you, thereore discard it.

Maharaj states that the I Am, that sense o beingness,is that which the mind is dependent upon.

Nisargadatta Maharaj:hold onto the I Am, the sense o

    beingness, discard all else.

By staying in the I Am, and discarding all else, thereis no longer a dependence upon thoughts, memories, emotions, associations, perceptions, even a perceiver. Then the stateless state o beingness, the sense o I Amappears. All experiences are dependent on I Am or thesense o beingness.

    Stage 5

As the consciousness ades, not only are you not the beingness,

you are not the I Am,

you are not the consciousness, you are prior to consciousness, the Absolute.Nisargadatta Maharaj called it the Parabrahman.

    Five Currents

This is where certain aspects o ve currents o

    teaching meet,

    Advaita: one substance, not two,

Vedanta: The end o the Vedas, neti neti, not this notthis. Neti Neti is the process o negating all names andorms, (nama rupa), in order to realize the Sel with a

    Capital S.

Kashmir Shaivism: The Shiva Sutras, The disappearance othe universe as something separate rom consciousness. Its reduction to sameness with consciousness, and itsassimilation with consciousness itsel.

Emptiness, the subtle side o consciousness is thebackground screen,

Consciousness being the oreground substance orsolidied emptiness,

Everything that appears to exist is made oconsciousness or condensed emptiness,

The emptiness is that substance on which theconsciousness appears to foat in or on.

    that I am.

Buddhism: You may not necessarily be aware o yourown enlightenment.

For Maharaj: there is no such thing as enlightenment, because there is no entity to be enlightened.

The Buddha said it this way,Nirvana means extinction or annihilation.Thereore, No being has ever entered Nirvana.

All is consciousness, there is no separate individualindependent sel.

All is Emptiness there is no separate individualindependent sel.

Nargarjuna: Dependent origination or no independentorigination revisited

Nothing ever arises independently o something else,

Or nothing ever arises independently o emptiness-consciousness,

Or there is no independent sourcing or originationindependent o something else,

Where the concept o oneness or nonduality dissolveas a concept,

Consciousness-emptiness is temporary and dependentupon the Absolute

Nisargadatta Maharaj:Enquire: On what does consciousness

The consciousness bubble appearing on the emptinessscreen AS IF they are two,

The two are one, one and the same.

    The Gross Physical Body

Metaphorically, The gross physical body has noconsciousness. It is not an independent being.

It is an idea, a mirage giving the illusion AS I it is thesource or center o its world,

a separate, independent, individual entity that canachieve enlightenment or realization.

Nisargadatta Maharaj (pg. 35):It is not possible or a phenomenal object

to achieve something and this (body) is only

    a phenomenal object.

The Mind:Subtle Body or dream body

Metaphorically, the mind also called the subtle body ordream body, bySiddharameshwar, contains thoughts,

memories, emotions, associations, perceptions, aperceiver, the body image.

The mind or subtle or dream body gives the illusionthat the body which is a thought or image isindependent containing a separate independent selwith its own sel nature independent o other selves.

Contained within this is the illusion that the mindresides in the body, in the skull,

rather than one mind, which contains everything.

The linguistic metaphor called the mind, brings with itthe illusion, that it resides in an individual skull,

Giving the illusion o creating its own thoughts, memories, emotions, associations, perceptions, etc.

Metaphorically, The consciousness is called bySiddharameshwar, the Supra-Causal body.

Prior to the casual body is the consciousness, the Selo All, the One Sole Being,

which is the substratum o the other 3 bodies.

The consciousness contains the three bodies,The emptiness is the consciousness,

The consciousness-emptiness is the substance that allthat appears to exist is made o,

The consciousness including the emptiness with itsawareness nature also known as the Supra-Causal body

is prior to the space/gap/or blankness. For Nisargadatta Maharaj even the consciousness is atemporary appearance, an appearance on the Absolute.

THERE ARE NO SPACES BETWEEN THINGSTHERE IS ONLY CONSCIOUSNESS

In this way all gaps, spaces between thoughts, spacesbetween breaths, spaces between,

all spaces o the subtle body, casual body are made oconsciousness,

thereore their appearances as separate, independent, individual things is an illusion.

Meditation: Experience the space orgaps or blankness or in-between spaces asconsciousness.

Meditation: Experience the knower of the

    There is only consciousness.

a ripple in the ocean o consciousness,

part o the bubble universe made o consciousness.

When the world o thoughts, memories, emotions, associations, perceptions, the body idea, the I Am,the sense o being, the observer, and even the gapwith a small g and the space with a small s and theconsciousness-emptiness dissolves

    there is only the Absolute.

The Sel o All, the consciousness-emptiness, supra-causal body is without divisions,

    Without a sense o doer-ship or another,

Without a sense o things being separate or dierentrom other things or objects or people or events,

All perceivables or conceivables are theundierentiated consciousness which is the selo all which appear like a bubble universe made oconsciousness on the Absolute.

The great illusion, maya, which is dened bySiddharameshwar as that which does not exist,

is a mental conception,A superimposition on the super-causal body, theconsciousness, the Sel o All.

However, all superimpositions are, the Sel o All, theundivided consciousness

Nisargadatta Maharaj:Go in, prior to thoughts etc, prior to

    beingness or consciousness itsel.

    The Absolute prior to consciousness.

Metaphorically everything that seems to exist is made

o, and contained in the One Sole Being also called theconsciousness, the Supra-Causal body, the Sel o All.

All o this is consciousness, appearing like a bubblefoating on the emptiness, (the subtle orm oconsciousness).

The witness o the 4 bodies, is called the Supreme

  • 7/31/2019 Rays of the Absolute

imagining it is witnessing the Absolute.

The Supreme Witness is a representation o

consciousness. It is consciousness appearing with a dual structure o:

    1) witnessing the 3 bodies and the consciousnessas the Supreme Witness which is a perceptualconguration made o consciousness.

    2) which imagines it is Witnessing the Absolute,

when it is actually, emptiness, (the subtle side oconsciousness), witnessing itsel.

In Kashmir Shaivism it is called the Supreme PerceiverThe witness and Supreme Witness are part o theconsciousness-emptiness and is an illusion.

The Vijnana Bhairava: When you have a desire toperceive this state you can only perceive it when itcomes down one step lower.

Any perception which utilizes a perceiver is anabstraction containing the automatic omitting processwithin the consciousness bubble.

As such, the perception o the Absolute as an object, is

an illusionary appearance made o consciousness.

In this way, whether we call it the Supreme Witnessor Supreme Perceiver it is still the consciousness, which perceives, witnesses, and is the knower o theperception, or is the experiencer o the Absolute.

The illusion is, that it is the consciousness perceiving/

witnessing/knowing the Absolute as it imagines itsel tobe. This is not the Absolute, rather it is consciousness-emptiness witnessing itsel, not the Absolute.

In this way, the Supreme Witness superimposes orprojects its antasized imagined perception o what it

imagines the Absolute is like unto the consciousness, which is actually itsel.

This is a perception o the Absolute NOT THEABSOLUTE.

The Vijnana Bhairava: When you have a desire toperceive this state you can only perceive it when itcomes down one step lower.

CONSCIOUSNESS AND THE PERCEIVEDEMPTINESS AND THE PERCEIVER OF THEEMPTINESS IS CONSCIOUSNESS,

CONSCIOUSNESS-EMPTINESS IS ANILLUSIONARY LAYER OR VEIL APPEARING ONTHE ABSOLUTE.

For Nisargadatta Maharaj the consciousness is not it.The consciousness is a temporary appearance aGigantic raud.

The consciousness-emptiness too is an appearance onthe Absolute.

The Absolute is reerred to by Nisargadatta as the

    Parabrahman,

beyond or prior to Brahman (consciousness-emptiness),

and thereore is prior to consciousness.

    That is The Primordial Advaita.
