Keynote PRESENTER: Erin Vobornik, ESL Supervisor at ECCTITLE: Creating Lesson Plans Incorporating TED-Ed Videos

DESCRIPTION:This workshop will provide an overview of TED-Ed and how it can help your students. Erin will explain how to open a free account. She will demonstrate how to construct a les-son using an appropriate video and content. She will also demonstrate how to adapt content for students with special needs.

Workshop 1PRESENTER: Theodore Bofman-Professor Emerita.TITLE: Creating a Culturally Sensitive Learning Environment

DESCRIPTION:In this workshop, we will examine myths and assumptions about culture and explore areas of potential conflict. Addi-tionally, we will discuss techniques ESL teachers and tutors can use to create culturally sensitive learning environments.

Workshop 2PRESENTER: Jeanine Ntihirageza, PhD, Associate Professor and Department Chair, TESOL Program at Northeastern Illinois UniversityTITLE: Multisensory Approach to Teaching Pronunciation

DESCRIPTION:A foreign accent can sound cute, but not if communica-tion is unintelligible. Any pronunciation practice should aim at helping the learner produce more intelligible En-glish and be successful at perceiving it. The goal of this workshop is to provide participants with practical ideas about how to improve the English language learners’ pronunciation. Research suggests that effective pro-nunciation should allow learners to feel, see, and/or touch the sounds in order to raise their awareness of pronunciation issues and improve their intelligibility. Participants will take home techniques and strategies, adaptable to almost any language level, which cover segmentals (individual sounds) and suprasegmentals (stress, intonation and rhythm in connected speech).

Book club PresentationPresenter: Marlene DelaneyTitle: How to Start a Book Club with Your Students

DESCRIPTIONMarlene is a seasoned RTL tutor who has been suc-cessful at running book clubs with students from the program. She will discuss how she implements and fa-cilitates her book club (for those who want to start their own!). We will also hear from English adult learners on how Marlene’s club has made an impact on their lives.
