WELCOME TO THE READING SUMMER PROMSWe are delighted to present another fantastic Summer Proms programme, featuring hundreds of musicians, actors and singers from a host of hard working groups across Reading and the surrounding area. The variety on offer is vast - symphony orchestra concerts, magnificent choral works, musical theatre and opera choruses, gospel music, organ recitals, jazz, brass bands and more!

Why not attend more than one of these exciting events and get your summer off to a musical start? Book a season ticket, for qualifying events, and save up to £28 on full price tickets. PLUS when you book a season ticket, you can get money off other events in the Proms.

All ticket sold via the Reading Arts Box Office are subject to a per ticket booking fee of £1.15 for tickets up to and including £10 and £1.95 for tickets greater than £10. Tickets with a face value of up to and including £5 are subject to a fee of 25p per ticket.

An evocative tale of the epic battle between good and evil, Jekyll & Hyde, the musical, is based on Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic story about a brilliant doctor whose experiments with human personality create a murderous counterpart. Convinced the cure for his father’s mental illness lies in the separation of Man’s evil nature from his good, Dr Henry Jekyll unwittingly unleashes his own dark side, wreaking havoc in the streets of late 19th century London as the savage, maniacal Edward Hyde.

Christopher Nickol, one of the UK’s leading organists, comes to Reading to show off his talents on the world-famous ‘Father’ Willis Organ in the Town Hall. Based in Glasgow, Christopher enjoys an active career as a performer and teacher, including broadcasts on BBC Radio & TV, and several acclaimed CD recordings. His programme includes popular favourites by Bach, Handel, Elgar, Saint-Saëns and Mendelssohn.

BERKSHIRE MAESTROS

YOUNG SINGER OF THE YEARSunday 19 May, 5pmThe Concert Hall, Blagrave Street, Reading RG1 1QH

Sponsored by Sovereign, the housing association and organised by Berkshire Maestros, young singers have been competing since November for a place in the final. From the initial 300 entries, 20 young singers will perform alongside the Berkshire Young Voices and the Sovereign Choir. Three winners will receive individual singing lessons for a year given by a Berkshire Maestros specialist voice coach.

ALDWORTH PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA’S

A FREE art, movement and music workshop for children aged 4 - 9 to explore the sounds created by a live orchestra. There will be a chance to make instruments, make your own music and try out instruments.

TOWN HALL CLASSICS ON THE VICTORIAN PIPE ORGAN WITH WILLIAM MCVICKERSaturday 25 May, 11.30amThe Concert Hall, Blagrave Street, Reading RG1 1QH

An opportunity to hear and learn about Reading Town Hall’s world-famous ‘Father’ Willis pipe organ. Its curator, William McVicker, will introduce the instrument, perform some Victorian favourites, and give an insight into the world of the nineteenth-century organist and organ-builder. There will also be an opportunity for members of the public to play the instrument.

Following the runaway success of Reading’s ‘Les Mis BIG Sing!’ in February, The Witt Studio is back with an opportunity to sing your favourite songs from the Phantom of the Opera.

Spend an exciting and entertaining afternoon learning to sing these songs under the guidance of professional vocal coaches, who have wide experience of performing in and successfully preparing singers for lead roles in West End musicals.

There are no auditions and all ages and singing abilities are welcome (under 16s must be accompanied by an adult).

Reading Symphony Orchestra return to The Concert Hall for their last concert of the season to play the epic Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique. A work which asks for over 90 instrumentalists, that tells the story of “an artist who is constantly haunted by the vision of the perfect unattainable woman”.

The orchestra is also delighted to welcome back Marie Macleod, described by The Guardian as ‘powerfully eloquent’, who will be playing the Walton Cello Concerto, which is warm and lyrical in tone and firmly puts the soloist in the spotlight.

WFS have a feast of contrasting music for your delectation on this summers evening.

Opening with Respighi’s simmering ‘Botticelli Pictures’ (1926), a gorgeous piece which literally paints pictures in music! Following this, the rather quirky ‘Tocatta e due Canzoni’ (1946) by Martinů, featuring an interesting, almost jazzy, rhythmic piano part with an American flavour. We’re then calmed by the music of Sibelius in the ‘Swan of Tuonela’(1895) – this rich dark tone poem is typical Sibelius, mixing the lush deep tones of the Cor Anglais (the Swan) with the lower strings. The concert ends with Stravinsky’s explosive ‘Firebird Suite’ (the 1919 version), an exciting conclusion to this very colourful concert.
