6 Reading StrategiesReading Strategies – plans for solving problems encountered in constructing meaning

Why learn reading strategies?1)Improve reading comprehension as well as efficiency in reading2)Read in the way that expert readers do3)Process the text actively, to monitor comprehension, and to connect what they are reading to their own knowledge and to other parts of the text

PREDICTCheck: -titles/pictures -headlines/subtitles, look for key words and guess what the text will be about-when the author asks a question -when the character in a story is about to do something

textbook e.g. – Statistics, state of nation…… what kind of statistics? what do you expect to read?

CLARIFYReading Strategy # 2

- If you don’t understand something, reread, look for clues-Find the meaning of words by:1)Look for little words in big words2)Look for roots/bases/prefixes/suffixes3)Look for commas that follow unfamiliar words. Sometimes the author may use the word "or".4)Keep reading.
