4 WAY TEST

For Rotary, The Four-Way Test is the cornerstone of all action. It has been for years, and it will be in the future. Of the things we think, say or do

As Rotarians, we should have The Four-Way Test in mind in every decision we make, all day long. Our utmost responsi-bility is to Speak The Truth, to Be Fair, to Build Goodwill and Better Friendships, and to do our very best in all situations.

4 Way Test was developed in 1932 by

Herbert J. Taylor.

---- 1 ---- Is it the TRUTH?

---- 2 ----Is it FAIR to all concerned?

---- 3 ----

Will it build GOODWILL and

better FRIENDSHIPS?

---- 4 ----Will it be BENEFICIAL

to all concerned?

FROM THE SEPTEMBER 5 MEETING

SUPERHEROb y s u p e r h e r o

President Ron Kohl opened our meeting with comments regarding discrepancies in boy versus girl Rotary membership and turned on his own kind by suggesting Girl Power is what makes things happen.

Rotarian of the Day Doctor Doctor Antonio Grillo - Lopez passed the floor to Rick Clark who introduced a video of Antonio. In the video Antonio was pronounced a Superhero by Superhero Christopher Reeves in connection with Antonio’s receipt of Discovery Health Channel’s Medical Honors Award. Antonio pioneered the development of Rituxan, used to treat non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Most importantly, he streamlined the approval process with the FDA, cutting the typical 7-year process in half. Hundreds of thousands of cancer patients have been treated with Rituxan as a result of Antonio’s efforts.

Bev Fritschner launched our announcements with the 2014 District Conference: Friday-Sunday, October 24-27, 2014 in Palm Springs, CA. Next up, Lara Gervais about our Networking Event: Thursday, September 18, 2014 in Del Mar. Invite family, friends and business associates. Please RSVP with Sheila Henry [email protected] or Laara Gervais [email protected]. Jaquie Reilly is seeking a car to purchase for about $3,000 for a friend in need. Jim Davies showed slides of the upcoming painting project at Casa de Paz Work Project: Saturday October 18, 2014 at Guadalupe Valle, Ensenada, B.C.

Foundation Chair Brett Morey exhorted us to leave behind our RINO ways (Rotarian In Name Only) and become elephants who take charge by contributing to The Rotary Foundation, by reaching our every Rotarian every year goal, and by contributing towards Paul Harris Fellowships. Speaking of, District Governor Louise Andres presented Paul Harris awards to Antonio Grillo-Lopez, Bruce Geier, and Bonnie and Krishna Aurora.

With sadness, Romik Kesian announced that charter member John Stephan was recently diagnosed with breast cancer. He underwent a mastectomy last month, but the cancer has spread to his lymph nodes. He is back in his home and would like to hear from his fellow Rotarians.

Fine Master Mike Schwarz was overwhelmed with High Fives, precluding time for any fines. Many of the High Fives continue to be related to George Manschreck’s fishing skills and generosity.

Our speaker for the day was John W. Haggerty, SANDAG Division Director of Rail. The bulk of his presentation focused on the $1.7 billion extension of the Trolley Blue Line to UTC, known as the Mid-Coast Corridor Transit Project. The initial authorization for this project occurred in 1988, and the expected completion date is 2019. The Blue Line will be extended from the station in Old Town, include a stop at UCSD, and terminate at the Westfield UTC mall. Details are available at www.sandag.org/midcoast.

Coming full circle, President Ron closed with another nod to Girl Power, ironically with a story of a wife on her knees.
