– Sent survey to 70 participants, who attended 2006 or 2007 workshop; 29 responded (41%)

• Summer School Survey

– Follow-up survey to past green chemistry summer school participants to assess the impact of participation in this program

– Sent survey to 274 students, who attended summer school 2003-2007; 174 responded (64% response rate)

ACS Green Chemistry Institute®American Chemical Society 10

Train-the-Trainers Survey Highlights

• 86% of respondents have spoken to more types of audiences about green chemistry since the workshop

• 25 respondents have spoken to >9600 people about green chemistry since the workshop

– Includes 1x1000; 1x1500; and 2x 2000+

• 67% strongly agree or agree that the train-the-trainers workshop improved their confidence in speaking to different types of audiences.

• Next workshop – Friday, June 26

• Look for a future workshop in 2010!

Goals of Summer School

• Introduce students (grad students & post-docs) to basic concepts

• Provide examples of green chemistry and green engineering technologies

• Engage students in discussions, case studies, problem-solving sessions, poster sessions, and laboratory experiments

• Provide a forum for discussion and opportunities for future collaborations

• Provide educational materials and project ideas

• Expand the current network of green chemistry and green engineering practitioners

ACS Green Chemistry Institute®American Chemical Society 16

Survey of Summer School Students

• Sent survey to 274 students, who attended summer school 2003-2007, during November – December 2008

• 15 question survey to access the impact of the summer school on the students’ career paths

• Used Survey Monkey (online survey)

• Sent survey link by email; followed up with second reminder email

• 174 responded (64% response rate)

If you would like to comment more…. (69 responded)

• I have incorporated the philosophy and the principles of Green Chemistry in my way of thinking.

• I have helped to start a company that has a group working in alternative energy. We are also able to bring a number of green chemistry elements in our manufacturing methods for drug delivery nanoparticles.

• I am strongly promoting Green Chemistry principles at my company.

• I founded a nanotechnology company out of my graduate… and we use green chemistry principles on a regular basis.

• PASI (summer school) helped me to see that there are many worthwhile careers beyond lab. PASI (summer school) was literally a turning point in my life.

• I hope that I can get back into green chemistry, because that is where I hope to continue my career

Where do we go from here?

Some ideas:

• Publish survey results!

• Conduct another follow-up surveys in 3-5 years

• Seek more permanent funding source

• Duplicate the summer school in Asia
