Annual Report 2015-January 2016

As Long as You’re on the Green

Mike Bates lost his sight in his right eye to retinal detachment five years ago. Soon after he

started to lose sight in his left eye to Macular Degeneration. After some treatments he retains

some peripheral vision in one eye, however most of his vision is gone.

Mike began asking the question, “Why me God?” He had been in the prime of his life, doing

well in the oil business and enjoying

golfing and his family time. He was

despondent. At his lowest point he had a

dream that caused him to have a change

of heart.

In the dream he was playing golf into the

wind and tiring rapidly. He decided to use

the wind to get his ball onto the green.

After success in the dream he never

asked “Why me?” again. His question

changed to “Why not me?”

Like a strong wind hindering a game of

golf, Mike’s vision loss seemed like an

obstacle to his best life. Mike found

hope in his dream and changed his

attitude about his vision loss. It became

a catalyst to an unexpectedly bright

future.

Mike discovered the Recording Library of

West Texas in 2011. He began enjoying

reading again and became an advocate for

our services to others experiencing similar

vision loss. Today he dedicates his time to

helping others find hope and services like

ours all over the Permian Basin.

He still enjoys an occasional round of golf with the aid of his grandson Cody. As they were

playing a round together Cody let him know, “You’re on the green! It’s not the one we were

aiming for but you are on the green!”

Mike is the founder of many local support groups for the

visually impaired, including being the founder of the

Vision of Hope group in Monahans. He is the President

of the West Texas Desert Council Chapter of the

American Council of the Blind (ACB) and he serves on

the Board of the Able Center for Independent Living .

For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow

After eight years of hard work and creativity, Michael Todd is leaving

the Recording Library of West Texas. Our long time station manager has been

the heart and soul of the radio station here at the library and he will be sorely

missed. Michael is getting married this May and moving to Austin Texas.

We here at the Recording Library of West Texas wish him well in all his new

endeavors.

Michael started with the Recording Library as a volunteer in 2008.

Very soon after that Michael became a employee and started work on the

website for the Recording Library of West Texas.

Michael’s next big project here at the library was learning about and

installing the Telephone Reader. The Telephone Reader was up and running

by June 2008. This is when the newspaper, grocery ads, etc. were able to be

listened to on a daily basis.

One of Michael’s biggest contributions was his part in setting up the

Radio Station here at the library. Since the summer of 2011, the Radio

Station’s motto, “Read By Listening” has been possible because of Michael’s

hard work and perseverance.

Thank you Michael!
