DrakeStadium,oneofthefinesttrackandfieldfacilitiesintheworld,isnowinits40thseasonastheon-campushomeoftheBruinmen’sandwomen’strackandfieldteams. Thestadiumtookonanewlookalmostnineyearsago(August-December1999)whenitwastransformedintoastate-of-the-artsoccer/trackandfieldfacility,addingtheFrankW.MarshallFieldatDrakeStadium.Thestadiumprovidesseatingfor11,700spectators.Thecostoftheprojectwas$1.5millionandwasmadepossiblebyaleadgiftfromFrankMarshallandKathleenKennedy.Allthemoneywasraisedfromprivatefunds;nostatemoneywasutilized. The track in thefacilityhasbeenconvertedfromaconventionalAmerican400-yardeight-laneovalwitha106-degreeradiusturntoanewEuropean400-meternine-lane(48”widthlane)witha136degreeradiusontheturn.ThesurfaceistartanprovidedbyMartinSurfacing.Thereis13mmofsurfacemate-rialontopofanasphaltbase.Atrack/fielddrainagesystemisflushmountedtotheinsideoflaneone.Alsoontheinsideoflaneoneisanelectrical/timingchasethatwillhousetheLynxtimingsystemforthetrack. Othertrackandfieldenhancementsinclude:thesteeplechasepithasbeenmoved“inboard”ofthetrackonthenorthturn;thefieldeventsincludeshot,discusandhammerringsatboththenorthandsouthendsoftheinfieldandajavelinrunwayisalsolocatedonbothendstoaccommodatefortheprevailingwindsforalltheseevents.AnewtopofthelinehammeranddiscuscagewaserectedintheSpringof2007.Inaddition,thehighjumpareahasbeenmovedtothesouthendofthetrackstadiumonitsowntartansurface.Thenorthendofthefacilityhaspracticepitsfortheshot,hammeranddiscus.Thestadiumhasfourlong/triplejumppits,featuring38-foot-longsand-filledpits.Therearetwopracticepolevaultpitsandoneinfieldrunwaythatcanaccomodatethepitoneitherthenorthorsouthendtotakeadvantageofthewind. Thankstothechangeintheconfigurationofthetrack,thegrassinfieldisnowwideenoughtohousearegulation75-yardby120-yardsoccerfield,theFrankW.MarshallField.

Another enhancement for FrankW.Marshall Field at Drake Stadium is ascoreboardwhichmeasures25-feethighby29-feetwideandcosts$180,000.TheboardwasagiftofKayandPaulSeider.Itisamatrixboard,allowingforscoringandstatisticstobepresentedfortrackandfield,soccerandfootball.ThesystemcanbeconnectedtotheLynxtimingsystem,whichwillgiveinstanttimeandplaceformationforracefinishes.Theboardwillalwayskeepthetimeofdayandhasthecapabilityofmeasuringanddisplayingtemperatureandwinddirection/speedfortrackmeets. SinceitsinauguralmeetonFeb.22,1969,thestadiumhasbeenthesiteofnumerouschampionshipmeets,includingtheNationalAAUin1976-77-78,thePacific-8Championshipsin1970and1977andtheCaliforniaCIFHighSchoolmeetin1969-71-77.In1988,DrakeStadiumhostedthePacific-10TrackandFieldChampionships,andin1994,thefacilityhostedthefirst-everCalifornia-NevadaChampionships.DrakeStadiumagainhostedthePacific-10TrackandFieldChampionshipsin1996and2005.ThestadiumalsohasbeenthehomeforUCLAwomen’strackteamssince1975.ItwasthesiteoftheNationalCollegiateT&FChampionships(theAIAW)in1977.Italsoisusedeachyearforspecialcampusevents,suchastheannualUCLACommencementExercisesinJune. In1973,itwasofficiallynamedDrakeStadiuminhonorofalegendatUCLA,ElvinC. “Ducky”Drake,whohadbeenassociatedwith hisalmamaterasastudent-athlete,trackcoachandathletictrainerforover60years.DrakediedinLosAngelesofaheartattackonDec.23,1988.Hewas85.
