25TH Sunday in Ordinary Time “If anyone wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.” (MARK 9:35) Jesus teaches us that we are called to serve one another. Sacrifice is not a word that many people like to hear. We think it means that we must give up something that we want. However, the literal meaning of sacrifice is “to make holy,” from the words “sacer” = sacred and “facere” = to make. In other words, we make our lives holy by sharing our gifts in the service of God.

OUTREACH MINISTRY

For several years we have had many parishioners who bring Communion on the weekend to our homebound or hospitalized parishioners. By bringing Communion to our homebound you show how valued they are as members of the parish and meet Jesus in the lives of these people. Please contact the rectory at 508-755-0408 to let us know if there is someone who would like to receive a visit and Communion or if you would like to join this ministry. Training is provided.

Mini-Retreat for Women

The Commission for Women of the Diocese of Worcester invites you to join them for a Mini-Retreat for Women on Saturday, October 20th at St. Mary’s Hall, Main Street, Shrewsbury from 8:30am until 1:30pm.

Come & See what Alpha is all about

and bring a friend!

Alpha is a simple “course” in Christian basics. It’s an

opportunity to deepen your faith, develop new

friendships and explore life’s meaning in a friendly

setting! Alpha will be offered at St. Columba on six

Sunday afternoons this fall. Each week the sessions

begin with dinner. A DVD presentation and small

group discussion follow. All adults are welcome as

we explore basic questions about God’s existence,

the purpose of life, the teachings of Jesus and much

more.

There is no charge for the course.

A “Come & See” Dinner is being held on Sunday,

September 30th from 4-6:00p.m. Flyers to attend the

dinner are located at the front entrance of the church

and also on the church website.

Catholic School Appeal 2018

September 20, 2018 Dear friends in Christ, Why choose a Catholic School given all the choices that are available today? While we take pride in our quality academics, in developing physical and teamwork skills in sports, and in being involved in community service, one thing stands out above all else: children can encounter Christ in all aspects of a Catholic School experience. The Catholic education each child receives is rooted in an understanding of the human person as made in the image and likeness of God who is the true source of human dignity. The mission of Catholic Schools is an integral part of the mission of the Catholic Church. In the Sacrament of Matrimony, parents vow to raise their children in the Catholic faith. There is no better opportunity to do so than in a Catholic School where teachers, staff and volunteers alike give witness to the faith every day, both in and out of the classroom. I invite you to review this year’s Catholic Schools’ Appeal report available online at www.schools.worcesterdiocese.org and in The Catholic Free Press and recognize how Catholic Schools are performing a vital service to the entire Church and how we need the support of everyone to carry on our mission. In order to share the “Good News” story of Catholic schools we rely on those of you who have received a Catholic education first-hand or have witnessed the benefits of a Catholic education in the graduates you have come to know. We owe it to future generations to be able to encounter Christ in the classroom. Thank you for prayerfully considering how you can be part of this commitment. With every prayerful best wish, I remain Sincerely yours in Christ, Most Reverend Robert J. McManus Bishop of Worcester
