Madre de Dios, a biologically rich rainforest of more than 85,000 km², forms a major portion of the Amazon River basin in southeastern Peru.

This extraordinary region is recognized as one of the most biodiverse areas of the planet and the "Biodiversity Capital of Peru" since it is home to a staering variety of plant and animal species, including endangered wildlife such as the oer, jaguar, puma, lowland tapir and the giant anteater.

Madre de Dios is characterized by lowland Amazonian rainforest which harbors some of the largest tracts of protected primary forest as national parks and wildlife reserves such as the Bahuaja Soneneand Manu National Park, recognized by UNESCO as a World Natural Heritage Site.

Madre de Dios, Peru A Paradise of Biodiversity

Madre de Dios also hosts rich primary Brazil nut forests which are only found in the natural triangle formed between Peru, Brazil and Bolivia. A precious habitat for countless plant and animal species, and a vital resourcefor indigenous communities.

Over the last fieen years, the region of Madre de Dios has lost over 200,000 hectares of rainforest, one of the Peruvian regions most affected by deforestation, degradation and habitat fragmentation.

The ecological abundance of Madre de Dios has been primarily threatened by human pressure generated as a result of the construction of the Inter-Oceanic Highway connecting Brazil and Peru. Since the construction of the highway (2009), migration of people to the area for exploitation of its valuable resources (timber, mining) has caused a 4x increase in the rate of deforestation.

20% of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (GHG) are aributable to deforestation and slash and burn agriculture.

Conservation programs that reduce emissions generated bydeforestation and degradation of forests (REDD+) constitute immediate strategies to mitigate climate change.

REDD+ Brazil-nut concessionsin Madre de Dios, PeruREDD+ Brazil nut concessions project, brings together 405 families in the Federation of Brazil nut producers of Madre de Dios (FEPROCAMD) to protect 300,000 hectares of Amazon rainforests. For more than a decade, the project has been avoiding the emission of over 1.5 M tons of CO2 per year.

Community-based conservation program in the Peruvian Amazon rainforests.

REDD+ Brazil nut concessions project is focused in promoting forest conservationby enabling local communities to benefit from sustainable revenue streams generated through the protection and responsible management of forests.

Communities in Madre de Dios are highly dependent on local ecosystems. However, they have limited resources to protect and live off their land. Traditionally, over one third of the population has lived from the collection and commercialization of the Brazil nut, an activity which takes place only during the harvesting months (4 months per year).

REDD+ Brazil nut concessions project creates economic opportunities through the generation and promotion of sustainable forestry activities that provide communities with year-round income, enabling them to increase their livelihood while preserving their forests.

Currently, the project benefits 405 local families. Short term strategies aim to incorporate 50 new families to the project each year, with the goal of reaching 655 partners by 2025.

Key project activities: foster sustainable growth for local communities, preserve biodiversity and contribute to mitigate climate change.

1. Improve community livelihood by generating year-round revenue streams through sustainable forestry management. - Increase household income through the sale of carbon credits generated by conservation efforts: deliver annual dividends to each of the families, partners of the project. - Develop sustainable forestry based activities, specifically to generate additional income beyond the Brazil nut collection season. E.g. Implement agroforestry systems. - Implement a Brazil nut processing facility to increase the value added activities of the sustainably harvested nuts.

2. Strengthen FEPROCAMD’s organizational and operational capacities, allowing them to play an active role in Madre de Dios sustainable development. - Provide technical and legal assistance to Brazil nut harvesters. - Provide machinery, technology and equipment. - Provide training to partners on sustainable forest management, fire prevention, and related topics. - Formalize concession demarcation for legal sanitation of land. - Develop communication strategies to strengthen relationships with all partners.

3. Avoid deforestation. Preserve the value of ecosystems and its biodiversity. - Conduct a research program to permanently assess the biological wealth (flora, fauna, water sources) within the project area. Identify, study and monitor the number of species found in the area to promote its protection. - Implement a multilevel system (through satellite technologies, governmental information, and in-field efforts), for monitoring and controlling the area. - Achieve the most prestigious international certifications for the project (VCS, CCB).
