Reflection

―Advent is a corporate spiritual journey that calls for expectant waiting and readi-

ness for the coming of the Christ. When the Church travels this journey and treats

it as a discipline of life and prayer, the joy of Christmas is immeasurably intensi-

fied‖

-Robert Webber

"Not everyone can wait: neither the sated nor the satisfied nor those without re-

spect can wait. The only ones who can wait are people who carry restlessness

around with them and people who look up with reverence to the greatest in the

world. Thus Advent can be celebrated only by those whose souls give them no

peace, who know that they are poor and incomplete, and who sense something of

the greatness that is supposed to come, before which they can only bow in humble

timidity, waiting until he inclines himself toward us—the Holy One himself, God in

the child in the manger. God is coming; the Lord Jesus is coming; Christmas is

coming. Rejoice, O Christendom!"

Calling

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP*— FROM ISAIAH 9

Leader: The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

People: Those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shined.

Leader: You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice

before you as with joy at the harvest.

People: For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be

upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

PRAYER OF ADORATION

PRAYER CONCLUDES BY SAYING IN UNISON:

Our Father who art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come. Thy will be

done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our

debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from

evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

HYMNS OF PRAISE — HARK! THE HERALD ANGELS SING/ COME THOU LONG EXPECTED JESUS (MUSIC ON PAGES 3–4)

*Biblical worship is always a response to God’s gracious revelation of himself to his people. Hence, all our

worship services begin with a scriptural “call to worship” (that is, the content of the “call” comes from God’s own Word

quoted by the leader and the congregation). In this “call” we are reminded that God always takes the initiative. He

always comes toward his people first, in grace. Our worship is a reflexive and deliberate response to his gracious call.

We are promised that when we worship him correctly, he is glorified and the dislocations of our lives are healed.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing WORDS: CHARLES WESLEY; TUNE: MENDELSSOHM

Hark! The herald angels sing,

―Glory to the newborn King;

Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

God and sinners reconciled!‖

Joyful, all ye nations rise,

Join the triumph of the skies;

With th’angelic host proclaim,

―Christ is born in Bethlehem!‖

Refrain

Hark! the herald angels sing,

“Glory to the newborn King!”

Christ, by highest heav’n adored;

Christ the everlasting Lord;

Late in time, behold Him come,

Offspring of the virgin’s womb.

Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

Hail th’incarnate Deity,

Pleased as man with men to dwell,

Jesus our Emmanuel.

Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace!

Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

Light and life to all He brings,

Ris’n with healing in His wings.

Mild He lays His glory by,

Born that man no more may die.

Born to raise the sons of earth,

Born to give them second birth.

Come Thou Long Expected Jesus WORDS: CHARLES WESLEY

MUSIC: ROWLAND PRICHARD

Come O long expected Jesus

Born to set Your people free

From our fears and sins release us

By Your death on Calvary

Hope to all the earth impart

Dear desire of ev'ry nation

Joy of ev'ry longing heart

Born Your people to deliver

Born a child and yet a king

Born to reign in us forever

Now Your gracious kingdom bring

By Your own eternal Spirit

Rule in all our hearts alone

By Your all-sufficient merit

Raise us to Your glorious throne

Cleansing

CALL TO REPENTANCE

Righteous Father, we who own more than we use, proclaim more than we experi-

ence, and request more than we need, come asking your forgiveness. We seek your

salvation, then act like we save ourselves. We beg your forgiveness, then repeat

our errors. We experience your grace, then act defeated. We rely on your power,

but only in hard times. We have become confused and misguided. Forgive our every

defection. Bring us to an unbroken commitment and a steady trust, through Jesus

Christ, who is the way of hope, the truth of God, and the life of love, now and al-

ways. Amen.

SILENT CONFESSION (45 SECONDS)

SONG OF COMFORT — AGNUS DEI (MUSIC: DAVID HLEBO)

Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world:

Have mercy on us (Grant us peace).

WORDS OF ASSURANCE A ND THE PEACE

Leader: ―Since we have a great high priest who has gone through the heavens, Jesus the

Son of God, let us hold firmly to the faith we profess. For we do not have a high priest

who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been

tempted in every way, just as we are—yet was without sin. Let us then approach the

throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us

in our time of need.‖ (Hebrews 4:14-16)

Leader: The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People: And also with you.

Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing WORDS: ROBERT ROBINSON

MUSIC: JOHN WYETH

Come Thou fount of every blessing

Tune my heart to sing Thy grace

Streams of mercy never ceasing

Call for songs of loudest praise

Teach me some melodious sonnet

Sung by flaming tongues above

Praise His name I'm fixed upon it

Name of God's redeeming love

Jesus sought me when a stranger

Wand’ring from the fold of God

He to rescue me from danger

Interposed His precious blood

How His kindness yet pursues me

Mortal tongues can never tell

Clothed in flesh till death shall loose me

I cannot proclaim it well

O to grace how great a debtor

Daily I'm constrained to be

Let Thy goodness like a fetter

Bind my wand'ring heart to Thee

Prone to wander Lord I feel it

Prone to leave the God I love

Here's my heart O take and seal it

Seal it to Thy courts above

Manger Throne WORDS AND MUSIC BY JULIE MILLER

What kind of King would leave His throne

In Heaven to make this earth His home?

While men seek fame and great renown

In lowliness our King comes down

Jesus, Jesus, precious One

How we thank You that You've come

Jesus, Jesus, precious One

A manger throne for God’s own Son

You left the sound of angels' praise

To come for men with unkind ways

And by this Baby's helplessness

The power of nations is laid to rest

What kind of King would come so small

From glory to a humble stall?

That dirty manger is my heart, too

I'll make it a royal throne for You

My heart is a throne for God's own Son

Communion

INVITATION TO THE SA CRAMENT

PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACC ESS*

We do not presume to come to this your table (O merciful Lord) trusting in our own

righteousness, but in your manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so much

as to gather the crumbs under your table. But you are the same Lord; you ever

love to show mercy. Grant us therefore (gracious Lord) so to partake of the body of

your dear Son Jesus Christ, and to drink his cup, that our sinful bodies may be

made clean by his body, and our souls washed through his most precious blood,

and that we may evermore dwell in him, and he in us. Amen.

*A prayer written by Thomas Cranmer, 16th century archbishop of Canterbury and leader of the English Reformation. He was martyred for his faith .

WORDS OF INSTITUTION

DISTRIBUTION OF THE BREAD AND THE CUP

Directions for taking communion: Redeemer Church welcomes all sincere

Christians—those who are trusting in Jesus Christ for salvation, understand the

meaning of the Lord’s Supper, and are in good standing with congregations that

proclaim the gospel— to receive Holy Communion with us. Please note that we use

wine for Communion; if you prefer non alcoholic grape juice, the grape juice is

white and the wine is red. For those with wheat allergies, a gluten free cracker is

available in place of the bread. Also, the bread and the wine may be eaten and

drunk as they are received. Please dispose of the cups in the trash receptacle when

done.

A Word to Parents: Children are welcome at the communion table. To receive

the Lord’s Supper, a child must have been baptized and been formally received as a

communing member by the Session of this church or the governing body of the

church to which you belong. If you have any question about how the process works,

please contact Pastor David. Children may take the wine at their parents’ discre-

tion.

COMMUNION MUSIC — JESUS IS OUR GREAT SALVATION (MUSIC ON PAGE 12 )

PRAYERS FOR THOSE NO T COMMUNING

(Because Redeemer is a church that is not only for convinced Christians, but also

for people at different stages in their spiritual journey, we gladly extend room for

you to process, think, and dialogue. Use the prayers provided below as guides to

reflect upon and respond to what God is doing in your life.)

PRAYER FOR THOSE SEA RCHING FOR TRUTH

Lord Jesus, you claim to be the way, the truth, and the life. Grant that I might be

undaunted by the cost of following you as I consider the reasons for doing so. If

what you claim is true, please guide me, teach me, and open to me the reality of

who you are. Give me an understanding of you that is coherent, convincing, and

that leads to the life that you promise. Amen.

PRAYER OF BELIEF

Lord Jesus, I admit that I am weaker and more sinful than I ever before

believed, but through you I am more loved and accepted than I ever dared hope. I

thank you for paying my debt, bearing my punishment on the cross, and offering

forgiveness and new life. Knowing that you have been raised from the dead, I turn

from my sins and receive you as Savior and Lord. Amen.

PRAYER FOR THOSE STRUGGLING WITH SIN

Lord Jesus, grant that I may see in you the fulfillment of all my need, and may turn

from every false satisfaction to feed on you, the true and living bread. Enable me

to lay aside the sin that clings so closely, and run with perseverance the race set

before me, looking to you, the Pioneer and Perfecter of my faith. Amen.

PRAYER OF COMMITMENT

Lord Jesus, you have called us to follow you in baptism and in a life of

committed discipleship in your church. Grant that I may take the necessary steps

to be one with your people, and live in the fullness of your Spirit. Amen.

Jesus Is Our Great Salvation WORDS - JOHN ADAMS

MUSIC - CLINT WELLS

Jesus is our great salvation,

Worthy of our best esteem;

He has saved his favorite nation;

Join to sing aloud of him.

He has saved us!

Christ alone could us redeem

He has saved us!

Christ alone could us redeem.

When involved in sin and ruin,

And no helper there was found,

Jesus our distress was viewing;

Grace did more than sin abound.

He has called us,

With salvation in the sound.

He has called us,

With salvation in the sound.

Let us never Lord forget thee;

Make us walk as children here.

We will give thee all the glory

Of the love that brought us near.

Bid us praise thee,

And rejoice with holy fear.

Bid us praise thee,

And rejoice with holy fear.

Free election known by calling,

Is a privilege divine;

Saints are kept from final falling;

All the glory Lord be thine!

All the glory,

All the glory, Lord is thine!

All the glory,

All the glory, Lord is thine!

heart, through Christ our Lord. Amen.

*A prayer written by Thomas Cranmer, 16th century archbishop of Canterbury, leader of the English Reformation and author of the first Book of Common Prayer.

He was martyred for his faith, burned at the stake outside St. Mary’s Church in Oxford, England.

14

What Does Discipleship at Redeemer Look Like?

Worship → Nurture → Mission → Culture

Worship & Nurture

Worship

The anchor and center of discipleship at Redeemer is our weekly Sunday worship and the

nourishment we receive there that comes through the Word and sacrament as a means of

God’s grace.

Nurture

Our ministries of nurture are the means we use to encourage spiritual growth and develop-

ment at Redeemer. They include the cultivation of an everyday discipleship church culture,

community groups, education, and family life gatherings.

Page 15: REDEEMER CHURCH Worship Service 11.28.2010 Reflectionstorage.cloversites.com/redeemerpresbyterianchurch1/documents/2… · Worship Service 11.28.2010 Reflection ―Advent is a corporate

15

Mission & Culture

What is discipleship for? To be a disciple is to be swept up in the mission of God in the

world. Our ministries of nurture drive, support, and inform our lifestyle characterized by

mission and pursuit of the peace of the city through creating culture.

Mission

We know our discipleship with Jesus is maturing when we are motivated by the grace and

acceptance of God to reach out to others. Practically we see the mission aspect of our dis-

cipleship on display when we pursue God’s mission through doing acts of mercy and hospi-

tality, serving our church community, caring for those who are suffering, serving the poor

and oppressed, sharing the good news of Jesus with those who do not yet follow Jesus, and

helping plant other churches that do the same.

Culture

Christians are called not to hide behind the walls of their distinct community but to take

their new hearts, minds and perspectives into the surrounding communities as salt and

light. As Abraham Kuyper contends, the believing community, gathered around Word and

sacrament, must radiate ―beams of faith’s light into the realm of common grace‖ into edu-

cation, art, science, politics, business, economics and the marketplace. This means that

Christians are called to create public education institutions, build businesses, organize

neighborhood groups, create charities,

be artists and musicians and writers,

and start political action groups. We

are to make culture. As Jeremiah ex-

horted the newly exiled Jews in Babylon,

―Seek the peace (shalom) of the

city‖ (Jer. 29:5-7). Redeemer supports

this effort through education and facili-

tating Christians banding together to

support and encourage each other as

they create culture.
