The annual election of Directors will be held Saturday, November 18th at the Rob-erts Centre in Wilmington, Ohio 7:30 AM till 4:00 PM. We have six fine candidates for four openings for the three year term 2018-2019-2020, so plan ahead to attend and vote Saturday, November 18th.

CHARLES R. BENTON – 27 year mem-ber. Profession: Retired from Gen-eral Motors; Journey-man die maker and Union representative. Served on the Rich-land County Sheriff’s Department for 12 years as a Special Deputy and Firearms

Instructor. Collecting Interests: Pre-1964 Winchesters, Smith & Wesson Revolvers, and US Military Arms, U.S. Marine Corps related items and edged Weapons. Qual-ifications: Broad knowledge regarding antique and collectable arms. Extensive knowledge and years of participation in NRA Silhouette and service rifle matches. Ohio State certified law enforcement and 6 years as a Union official while employed at GM: skilled at problem solving and con-flict resolution. US Marine Corps 1980-84. Memberships: Life member of the NRA 30 plus years.

THOMAS E. BOWERSOX – Member for 38 years. OGCA Director since 2009. Profession: Wildlife Outdoors Skills Of-ficer, retired in 2002. Collecting Interests: Single shot rifles (Stevens & Ballards); cartridges and early sporting and shooting

collectibles. Qualifications: In charge of Hunter & Trapper Education, and training programs in various other wildlife-related fields in Wildlife District 5 while a State Wildlife Officer. At Ohio State University, he was a member of the Rifle & Pistol Club and organized the Trap & Skeet Shooting Club in 1973. Shoots in High Power, Small Bore and Trapshoot Leagues. Chairman of the 2014 OGCA Members Recognition Banquet; Co-chair of the 2014 Display Show Committee, 2017 NRA Display Co-Chair. Memberships: Life Member of the NRA; Greene County Fish & Game Club;

Fairborn Rifle & Pistol Club; American Sin-gle Shot Rifle Association; International Ammunition Association; Tri-State Gun Collectors; and Archaeological Society of Ohio.

RODNEY E. KIRIAN – (Radical Rod) Member for 23 years. Profession: Self-employed for 35 years at an inde-pendent motorcycle store. Attended Bowl-ing Green State Uni-versity. Collecting Interests: Enthusi-astic Ruger and Colt

collector with an extensive collection of Rugers. Displays his collection at both the OGCA and ROCS shows. Qualifications: Was involved in his family’s floor covering business from a young age. Worked full time as an installer for 20 years. In 1982 started a used motorcycle and repair busi-ness part time. In 1995 went fulltime and is currently running this business along with his son. Memberships: NRA En-dowment, Maumee Valley Gun Collectors Assoc., Tri County Colt Collectors Assoc., Ruger Owners Collectors Society, Red Eagle News Exchange, and an AMA life member.

MICHAEL E. LUC – Member for 17 years. P r o f e s s i o n : C o -owner and president of Luc Ice Co., Port Clinton, Ohio, (hap-pily semi-retired). Graduated from BGSU and started Luc Ice Co. in 1981. Collecting Interests: Life-long collector of

Marlin firearms items, including firearms, items manufactured by, and paperwork generated during their history. Qualifica-tions: Past president of Marlin Firearms Collectors Assoc., (knows how important it is to have good people running an or-ganization), helped with MFCA display for the NRA shows. Memberships: NRA, International Ammunition Assoc., Colo-rado Arms Assoc., Marlin Firearms Col-lectors Assoc., Maryland Arms Collectors, Maumee Valley Gun Collectors, Michigan Antique Arms Collectors, and Remington Society of America.

SEAN A. MCCARTER – Member for 23 years. Profession: Attorney in private practice for 23 years. Collecting Interests: Harrington & Richard-son single-shot target pistols, and guns relat-ing to Walter F. Roper. Collecting since the age of 6. Qualifica-

tions: Legal practice focused on business transactions and compliance issues, ne-gotiations, creating contracts, resolving employment issues, dispute resolution and investigating controversies. Commissioner on the Ohio Reclamation Commission for 9 years, 7.5 years chairing the meetings and hearings. Active in several shooting sports and several sporting clays fundrais-ing events, including the Sportsmen’s Al-liance Trailblazer (youth outreach). Mem-berships: NRA Life, Hilltop Sportsman’s Club, Smith & Wesson Collectors and the Ohio State Bar Association.

ANTHONY ZINSMAYER – Member since 2009. Profession: Retired from Medina Midwest Marketing, LLC., was President of a manufacturer’s representative firm. Collecting Interests: Collecting 30+ years, Colt Lightning and Thunderer, 1903 and

1908 autos, Browning Hi-Powers, and Walther PP, PPK, and PPK/S. Qualifi-cations: Over 40 years of experience in business management. Attended Ohio University, served in the U.S. Coast Guard, 1962-1966. Owned three retail stores. Sales manager for 12 stores, responsible for sales, hiring and training 120 plus em-ployees. Branch manager for largest ap-pliance and electronics distributor in the U.S. (responsible for sales, hiring, training and trade shows). Memberships: NRA, Colt Collector’s Association, WWII, Korea and Vietnam Roundtable.

Director elections november 18th, 2017 We’re counting on Your vote! A great time was had by all at the Annual Dis-play show and Banquet this past May. We had 20 displays and a full house at the banquet. The keynote speaker was Jon Husted who is running for governor of Ohio and is a staunch supporter of the Second Amendment as you will see in his article on page 6. Our special guest speaker was Kayne Robinson, former president of the NRA. Kayne is a true gun nut and enjoys shooting and collecting arms. Kay-ne gave a great speech about our gun rights and the purpose and benefits of being an NRA member. OGCA doesn't require our members to be NRA members, but I would implore all of our members to join. They are the best friends we have in Washington. They are constant, and always stand for our gun rights and free-dom.

Just in case you did not have enough to see in May, we opened the July meeting with two full rows of excellent, educational displays courtesy of The Ruger Owners and Collec-tors Society and The Thompson Collectors Association. Turnout was great and the A/C kept up with the crowd. We saw everything from Bill Ruger’s .44 Magnum Flattop “Bun-tline” with 15” barrel to an M3 “Grease Gun” submachine gun. Plus, Jack Meador was kind enough to bring back his crowd-stopping “Baby Face Nelson” exhibit featured on the front cov-er. Distinguished member, Dave Yost could be found admiring the displays. He is Ohio’s Auditor of State running for Attorney General. Special thanks to Lee Sundermeier and Tra-cie Hill for all their hard work. For those who missed the July meeting, we will be sure to in-clude highlights in upcoming newsletters.

Coming up at our September 9-10 meeting, will be friends from The Winchester Arms Collectors Association (WACA) and a new group, The American Bowie Knife Associa-tion (ABKA) that I am sure you will enjoy. The guys are serious about knife collecting, and bring a lot to the table about knives and the role they played in the making of America. This will be the first time for this group, so give all a warm OGCA welcome.

For your information, the dues statement will come in October, and I hope you don't forget

to pay for your annual tables in September. By doing so you save $60 per table per year. The Cleveland bus connection will run in No-vember. I want to thank the folks who ride, and we need your support to keep the service run-ning.

We have an election coming up in November and we have a number of promising candidates running. The bios for director candidates are on the following page. This is a chance for our members to voice their opinion by voting for your favorite member to represent you. If you don't vote, don't bitch.

Now I will get to one of the reasons I like being a member of the OGCA. Our Annual Display Show is one of the best in the USA. All were good and all were interesting and well laid out. I have judged numerous times at various na-tional shows, so believe me when I say they were exceptional. I want to personally thank Ralph Petrilli, Fred Kolb and Jim Curlovic for being our judges this year. This can be a thankless job. The displayers in both May and July are to be commended for their efforts and expertise in building and manning their exhib-its. There is a mountain of knowledge in each display, and the OGCA wishes to thank all who participated in building a display at the last two meetings. All love to share their knowledge and go out of their way to answer questions and are always helpful to novices.

I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to the thousands of members who make safety their number one priority at each meeting. We remind our tableholders to be extra vigilant in tieing each firearm before it is placed on the table or offered for sale including during set-up. Important safety enhancements for table-holders are announced on page 4, along with reminders for all members. Think of OGCA on August 8th, our founding day exactly 80 years ago. I hope to see all of you soon, and have a great summer.

WACA and ABKA These two fine collectors organizations will be holding their show within our show September 9-10. The Win-chester Arms Collectors Association (WACA) will have

numerous trade tables, and their an-nual Winchester display competi-tion. Ohio loves these rifles! You can spend all day looking at the neat, old memorabilia brought by WACA mem-bers! Plus, coming all the way from the Cody Firearms Museum is Jessica

Bennett, Records Specialist and Danny Michael, As-sistant Curator who will be on hand to perform record searches on your Winchester’s, Marlins, and L. C. Smith firearms.

Also at our September meeting, members of the Antique Bowie Knife Association (ABKA) from across the country will descend upon Wilmington with their treasured Bowie knife col-lections for sale or display. Since their founding in 1975, ABKA has grown into a world-wide organiza-tion that is “dedicated to the col-lecting, study, and preservation of Antique Bowie Knives.” Member-ship is open to persons over 21 years of age and is by invitation.

Winchesters and BoWies

Annual 2018 Tables will be on sale at the September and No-vember meetings (and by con-tacting the Business Office at (330) 467-5733 or [email protected]). Annual tables run Janu-ary 2018 to November 2018 for all scheduled Roberts Centre meetings.

Take advantage of the savings when you reserve annually. Cost is $420 per table for six shows in the calendar year. That breaks down to $70 per table x 6 regu-lar Wilmington meetings and is a savings of $60 per year, per table on table rent. (Individual table rental paid per show is $80.00.) Annual tables are also a convenient way to reserve the same table for the whole year! (Table location based on avail-ability.)

2018 Annual Table Applications are available only for a limited time. Deadline to reserve your annual table for all six shows in 2018 is December 14, 2017. Call the business office anytime with questions.

Also, as a reminder to those who

rent tables per show, members may now reserve tables for up to two shows at a time ($80 per table). For example, using the form on page 13 of this news-letter, you may reserve tables for September, or November or both. Simply check the box at the top of page 13 for which show or shows for which you are reserving tables. The form may be copied but don’t forget to also copy and sign the back of the Table Application (page 14).

Pay via mail, phone, or in person during a meeting for the next 2 meetings. There will be no table application in the next mailing as it is an interim mailing containing your dues statement and the Ap-plicant List.

If you need a Table Application form contact the business of-fice anytime. If you would like to be added to the “Table Ap-plication email list” just shoot us an email at [email protected] and we will automatically email the form to you 5-6 weeks prior to each meeting. It also serves as a convenient reminder.

The vast majority of our members think “safety first” when they rent table space. They religiously tie their guns and remove clips and magazines before setting up, and would never even think about leav-ing their table unattended let alone unat-tended without all their clips removed and firearms safety-tied.

Yet that is exactly what has happened with a handful of members apparently so eager to go shopping that they carelessly walked away, making it a major problem for our security staff and volunteers who are stuck spending precious time track-ing them down. They are jeopardizing our lives, our ability to rent the meeting hall, and the very existence of OGCA. We do

not, and will not tolerate that! At the September meeting, any unattended tables in violation of a safety rule will be closed and covered. Every director and security guard is in charge of a section of the hall and will be on the look-out. We need and require your cooperation.

In addition, to assist in our ongoing safety efforts we are asking all safety conscious tableholders to place their white table label (sticker printed with name, date and table number) on top of each of their tables so security staff and directors can quickly find their way through the hall, and expedi-tiously identify and correct those in viola-tion of our safety rules. You can find the table label on your table when you arrive.

This will save a lot of time!

On a final note, during set-up hours, only the Tableholder and one Helper are per-mitted, and the Helper must be a member to whom Friday night trading privileges do not apply. The Helper is permitted into the hall to help with loading, unloading and/or watching your table. Friday night trad-ing privileges apply only to the Tableholder and do not extend to the Helper.

2017 Member Recognition B anquetWhat a beautiful evening everyone had at this year’s banquet. Camaraderie was in the air and you felt honored to be a part this organiza-tions 80th anniversary. Charles Rush, President, spoke a few words honor-ing those who served in the military and our many long-

time members, and made a point to welcome everyone new to OGCA. He also spoke about cherished friendships made through OGCA and closed by explaining that the “Bedford Gun Juice” drink special at the bar is not to be confused with the famous (infamous?)“Bedford’s Gun Juice” made by colorful OGCA founder Miller Bedford.

It was an honor to have Jon Husted take the stage as our guest speaker. Hus-ted currently serves as the 53rd Ohio Secretary of State and is a conservative candidate for Governor of Ohio. He is a lifelong supporter of the 2nd Amendment and has an A+ Rating with the NRA.

A casual buffet provided a delicious BBQ style dinner.

Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. We didn't pass it to our children in the bloodstream. It must be fought for, protected, and handed on for them to do the same, or one day we will spend our sunset years telling our children and our chil-dren's children what it was once like in the United States where men were free."- Ronald Reagan

I believe in my heart and soul what Ronald Reagan said is absolute right.

The Constitution, specifically the bill of rights, was designed to protect our individual rights, and with every succeeding generation we need to protect the original intent of the Con-stitution to preserve those rights.

Every constitutional right should be defend-ed. The media defends 1st Amendment with great vigor, as they should, because the right to freedom of speech is one of the principles that make America great.

The 2nd Amendment, however, does not have as many champions in these circles. That's why it is up to people like you and me, through organizations like the OGCA, to be its champion. Protecting these found-ing American values for future generations is what motivates me to serve as Ohio's next Governor.

When I served as Speaker of the Ohio House of Representatives, I saw the 2nd Amend-ment brought under fire by both Republicans and Democrats. I knew then, as I know now, that we must choose principles over politics.

One such attack had already succeeded in Ohio. Our concealed carry laws were among the tightest in the nation, turning law-abiding gun owners into common criminals on a regu-

lar basis. As Speaker, I worked with groups like the National Rifle Association, Buckeye Firearms Association, Ohio Gun Collectors Association, and Ohioans for Concealed Car-ry to make much-needed reforms to these laws to protect 2nd Amendment supporters – and House Bill 347 was born.

The legislation made its way through the General Assembly and was presented to the Governor for his approval. Much to the sur-prise of 2nd Amendment supporters like me, the Republican Governor – a member of my own party – vetoed the measure.

Within hours, I reassembled the members of the House and we voted to overturn the Governor’s veto. This was the first time since the 1970’s that an Ohio Governor’s veto was overturned by the legislature and it hasn’t happened since.

House Bill 347 became law through our efforts that afternoon. With that, we sent a message, strong and clear, to every would-be criminal: Your victims are no longer defenseless – they just might be armed.

We also sent another message that day. The message that we actually believe in our 2nd Amendment rights, that we are willing to pro-tect and advance our 2nd Amendment rights, and that when faced with the choice between political expediency and the constitution, we will stand with our nation’s constitution every time.

What I hope this demonstrates to you is that I believe in more than saying the right things – I believe in doing the right things, even when it gets tough, and I hope this will serve as a strong lesson for future generations of public officials.

When they drafted our Constitution, our na-tion’s founders understood that to protect our other constitutional rights - the rights of free-dom of speech, religion and private property – that there would be times when we would need our 2nd Amendment rights to do it. It was with those principles in mind that they declared it a right of

Karl L. Minke: It is with great sadness that we share the unex-pected passing of Karl L. Minke, April 29, 2017. He was the son, brother, hus-band, father, step fa-ther and grandfather to many. Born and raised in the Cleve-land area, he worked

at Lamson and Sessions, and later at Premier Manufacturing for 30 years before retirement. Karl was a long-standing OGCA member, and was active at the I-X Center in Cleveland as a table holder. He was a former Ruger collec-tor. Karl was also a member of the Maumee Valley Gun Collectors Association and Michi-gan Antique Arms. Karl was a Colt collector and a builder of long guns, specializing in the muzzleloading variety, another new venture he discovered as he went into retirement. He was so very knowledgeable with dates, serial numbers, makes, models and markings that he became, at times, known as “The Walking Blue Book of Firearms.” His passion for the outdoors led him to many friends. He loved hunting, especially the “whistle pigs”, grouse, deer and small game. He also enjoyed the sport of fishing. Just being outdoors, enjoy-ing nature, would be his perfect day! Fellow members, especially in the I-X Center days, might remember him: that really tall guy with the white beard and hair, and an interest in every kind of firearm! He will be missed!

OGCA member Macie Preston of Arcanum, Ohio, passed away unexpectedly June 3,

2017 in a motor ve-hicle accident. This beautiful young lady was just 19 and was the daughter of mem-ber, Mark Preston and granddaughter of past president, Robert Ray Preston. She was the kind of person that anyone

would be proud to call daughter, granddaugh-ter, sister and friend. Macie was a graduate of Lima High School and attended Rhodes College. She played youth soccer, ran track and played softball for Wren. She was also a member of the Mercer County Horseman’s Club and was involved in Cheer, 4-H, FFA, and AWANA, whose mission it is to reach kids, equip leaders and change the world for God. A donation in her memory was made to support the education and training of another young OGCA leader. Macie made her mark on this earth and will be deeply missed by her friends, family, and all who knew her.

A friend of many at OGCA, and the light of

his family’s life, Matthew John Farley, 50, of Millbury, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2017. We are assured there were great re-unions happening in Heaven on that day. He was born on June 29, 1966 to Jack and Ferne Farley of Millbury. They made sure that Matt had the richest, fullest life available to him. He was a graduate of Wood Lane School where he played basketball, participated in the Spe-cial Olympics, and enjoyed many friendships. Matt was never limited by his circumstances. He traveled extensively – West Virginia and Oklahoma being favorite destinations. In his mind, he had been a lawyer and presidential candidate, however, he had actually worked at The Flying J truck stop and McDonald’s in recent years. He enjoyed his retirement by spending time with his family, traveling with his dad and brother to gun shows, and eating at Bob Evans whenever possible. He was a devoted member of Mainstreet Church where he had been active in the youth group. Matt was gifted at making loving friendships easily and inspiring everyone he met.

Mark Frankovich of Pennsylvania, passed away comfortably on June 8, 2017 surrounded by his wife of 28 years and son, Nicho-las, also a member. Mark was well known throughout the collecting fraternity and a friend to many. He had a big heart and hearty laugh that filled the hall. He was 58 and his passing is a re-

minder that life is to be celebrated.

Ronald J. English, loving husband and de-voted father and grand-father, went to be with his Lord and Savior Je-sus Christ, on Friday, April 14, 2017. He was a Life member and mem-ber for an incredible 57 years, having joined in 1960. He was well-known in the community as the Owner and Presi-dent of Olde English Gun Shoppe, Inc. from 1974 until 1999 when he began to turn over the business to his son, Evan, also a member of OGCA. He lived in Tipp City and attended Tippecanoe Schools graduating in 1955. Ron

went on to The Ohio State University where he graduated in 1959 with a degree in Busi-ness Administration. Ron is survived by his wife of 58 years, three children, six grand-children, and two great-grandchildren. Ron was a founding member of Community Bible Church in Tipp City, and was very involved with the ministry. He was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association, and several other gun and watch collecting organizations. He will be remembered by all his many friends in and out of OGCA.

W. Roger Fry passed away May 2, 2017. He originally joined OGCA in 1962 and was a Life Member. Roger was an accomplished attorney and collector of a wide range of in-teresting and educational items from guns to tribal art, and was known for his collection of Cincinnati Art Carved Furniture. He was also a philanthropist, author, poet and explorer of rare species in remote areas. He lived an amazing life, and we are proud to have had such an accomplished member among us. His family wrote a de-lightful and captivating memorial, the full ver-sion of which can be found at www.thomasjustinmemorial.com. Roger practiced law at Rendigs, Fry, Kiely & Dennis for his entire career of more than 50 years having started as a law clerk in 1962 while he attended night classes. Roger be-gan collecting from a young age. First it was firearms, purchasing his first gun in his early teens. He then became enamored with the art, artists and people of the American West, Plains and Southwest. Thereafter, he turned his attention to the Arctic North and the native people that inhabited it. He was fascinated by the ingenuity required to live, let along thrive, in such unforgiving places. His large and varied collections reflect these interests and many others, including folding pocket knives. He found the folding pocket knife to be the most versatile tool and was never without one, much to his dismay when courts around Ohio began installing metal detectors! Rog-er’s philanthropic activities ranged from the Cincinnati zoo to the Cerebral Palsy Associa-tion. He was the recipient of several legal life-time achievement awards and was a Council member for the Village of Indian Hills. Roger is the descendent of two master Cincinnati woodcarvers, and built a workshop paneled in cherry wood with brass fittings himself. Roger loved his workshop and it quickly be-came the neighborhood’s workshop – people would stop in all the time with some project or another. What a fascinating life!

In my 4 years as House Speaker, we accom-plished many things for which I am very proud – things like income tax cuts, fiscal discipline and school vouchers so that every Ohio child can have the chance at a better education. But standing strong in support of our 2nd amendment rights will always be one of my favorite moments; when we proved that we were willing to keep our word.

I’m proud to be the only statewide official – and the only candidate for Governor – to hold an A+ rating from the NRA.
