INTERVIEWS WITH YEAR 12 STUDENTS I have begun to have short interviews with all Year12 students focusing on student academic achievements and strategies for improvement. I have been providing feedback on OP aspirations and how well students are progressing towards their Queensland Certificate of Education. These discussions are timely as Year 12 students prepare for the QCS Test in week 9 and Block Exams in weeks 10 and 11. These interviews will continue over the next week. Year 12 students are required to really focus on their remaining assessment pieces. MIGHTY MINDS - On the 1 st and 2nd of August our OP-Eligible Year 12 students attended a workshop run by the Mighty Minds organisation. This workshop was designed to complement the Queensland Core Skills (QCS) Test preparation program currently running in the College. This workshop helped students develop effective learning skills. Each student was shown an array of successful problem solving techniques for answering literacy, numeracy and visual literacy type questions that can be expected on the QCS test. SET PLAN INTERVIEWS - The vast majority of Year 10 students took part in Senior Education Training Plan interviews held on the 29 th , 30 th and 31 st of July. These SET Plan interviews provided an opportunity for parents and students to outline their future aspirations and to talk about proposed subject selections for Year 11. Draft subject selections need to be finalised by the end of the week. INFORMATION FOR PARENTS - STUDENTS AWAY FROM SCHOOL DURING THE TERM - Every parent of a child of compulsory school age has a legal obligation to ensure their child is enrolled and attending school during advertised term dates. Parents must apply for an exemption from this obligation when their child cannot attend or it would be unreasonable in all the circumstances for their child to attend school for a period of more than 10 consecutive school days. Situations where an application for an exemption may be made include: Illness, Family reasons, Cultural or religious reasons Please note that taking students out of school for a family holiday is not an acceptable reason for the student to be missing school. If your child is out of the school for a period greater than 10 days the school is not responsible for providing an educational program to your child, however they may provide advice on other educational options available. Parents can apply for an exemption and are encouraged to discuss with the school principal whether an application for exemption is a suitable option. The school can provide you with an application form for an exemption. It is important that supporting documentation and evidence are attached to the application. REDLYNCH COLLEGE INDIGENOUS DANCE GROUP ‘THE BROLGAS’

Redlynch State College is proud to announce our fi rst ever indigenous dance group, ‘The ‘Brolgas’. During school breaks over the last two weeks our indigenous students learnt and practised various contemporary aboriginal and islander dances. Trevor Peckham volunteered his time to choreograph and impart essential cultural knowledge to the students. The dance troop demonstrated their dances to our Japanese visitors and Year 12 students.‘The Brolgas’ dance troop was also invited to perform at the Redlynch State College annual Art Extravaganza held on 31st July. ‘The Brolgas’ dance

troop was painted in traditional ochres and body paint. The body artwork of the boys depicted their totems and cultural ties to family and tribal lore. Trevor delivered the ‘Welcome to Country’, played the didgeridoo and narrated the black mountain dreaming story. The troop hopes to dance at the Redlynch State College NAIDOC week later this term. Thank you to all involved in making the Brolga Dance Troop successful. Thank you to Trevor and family for the choreography and making of lap-laps.Brolgas Dance Troop: Ahkeem, Baeden, Ernest, Kahlani, Naseli, Alex, Che, Conrad, Fitzroy, Lorenzo and ReeceRod Peckham

RSC IS the best school in Cairns because we have wonderful staff students and fantastic events.

Firstly, I strongly believe that our school has some AMAZING events like Cross country, Sports day, Obstathon, Discos and our school fete.

Every two years, our school has a fete. It's always jam packed with people.

Secondly, the students in school are wonderful people. They are

always on the go and ready to learn. They will help their friends or even strangers with their work or problems.

Thirdly, we all have a school motto to think about which is, "On the

tracks to success". We also have a school vision which is, "Learning in our valley, thinking beyond the hills".

Also, the teachers and teacher aides are all brilliant people and are VERY friendly. They will always be around to help, and even in class,

when you need help with Spelling, Maths, or any other kind of problem.

I understand if other people don't agree with me because they

haven't seen it for themselves. Redlynch State College is the best

school in Cairns and WILL stay that way.

In conclusion, RSC is the best school in Cairns because; we have

MARVELOUS staff, OUTSTANDING students and FANTASTIC events. I truly believe that RSC is the best school and I think you

should too!!

GUEST SPEAKER; LEE STADDON – CEO BIRCH CAROL & COYLE CINEMAS MACKAY

What if “your Facebook page can actually prevent you from getting a job”?I know, it sounds far-fetched. We put things on social media sites all the time, no one really thinks about half of the offensive and miserable statuses people post every day. However, recently employers have found that Facebook is the most effi cient way to fi nd out what their potential employees are really like. Photos that are a bit too revealing or a status saying how much “teenage life like totally like sucks” can be the difference between getting an interview and waiting for that phone call that never comes. On the 2nd of August 2013 the BEACON ambassadors, accompanied by Mr Forgie, Mr Andrejic and Mrs Wedmaier attended a breakfast seminar at Ridges Tradewinds hotel entitled “The pitfalls of social media.” The event was planned and executed thanks to the Business Liaison Association which is an organisation fi nanced by government organisations, private sector corporations and charities. A live string quartet provided by Cairns State High School performed inbetween the speakers. First was the opening by Ms

Andrea Ambrosio from the Business Liaison Association. Afterwards, breakfast was served for everyone and then following up after that was the highlighting event, the guest speaker Mr Lee Staddon who was awarded AIM Young Manager of the Year award. His speech was very personal, it involved us hearing many things about his working life, from the humble beginnings at Red Rooster in Melbourne to managing the Birch Carrol and Coyle cinema in Mackay. Mr Staddon explained that the reason social media can be an issue when getting a job is that when he attempts to hire a new employee, usually more than one person applies for the job. When this happens he has to conduct interviews with the applicants if he deems their resumes and personal achievements worthy. However if more than one person performs greatly in the interview, yet there is only one place he needs another source of information to make that opinion. This is where Facebook becomes involved because that can, and in most cases does, represent a person’s personal life. Due to this scary reality Mr Staddon has provided one statement which is the most important for any one searching for a job “preparation is key!”To be prepared is the only way to even stand a chance for a job. Preparing means: Clean up your Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr and MySpace

-I know no one really uses it anymore but still counts; Do your background research, if you’re applying for a job as receptionist at a popular hotel chain then try to get background knowledge on the company before you have your interview; Do not prepare for questions that the employer will ask you, instead prepare some questions to ask the employer and actually know what you’re talking about instead of rocking up on the day with nothing but a song in your heart and a skip in your step –yeah that’s not going to work. Also last thing, prepare a story. If you have a good story to tell the employer, one that can represent your skills in what that specifi c job requires for example: sales, customer management or improvisation. For any further information on employment advice contact Mr Forgie as he always has plenty advice to give or some hot jobs on offer.By Jason Yr10 Beacon Ambassador

ENGLISH DEPARTMENT NEWS - Year 10 English students have been studying William Shakespeare’s 16th century play Romeo and Juliet throughout this term. As an extension of this study, Year 10 students have been offered the opportunity to view a Shake and Stir performance of this play on Thursday 29th August during lesson one. This is an in-school excursion and is limited to the fi rst 120 students who bring their permission slips back to Ms Pyers in Jungara staffroom.Year 12 English students are sitting their English Exam on Wednesday 14th August. The English Department staff wish the students all the best for this assessment.PAT Testing: Students in Years 7-9 will be completing PAT testing during their English classes in Week 8. The results from these tests will help determine students placement in classes for 2014.

FROM THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT… Congratulations to around 80 students from year 7 – 11 who participated in this year’s Australian Mathematics Competition on August 1st. Many thanks to Mr Brendon McAlister for his organisation of this event.Next Tuesday 13th, selected students will be sitting the ICAS Maths Test. This is an internationally recognised exam which gives students information about how they compare to others in their age in not only Australia, but also the world. Our aim at Redlynch is to improve EVERY students’ Maths result. We can only do this when students (along with the support of parents) have a dedication and an aspiration to excel. Teachers are fi nding that students are not bringing the required equipment to class which ultimately hinders their ability to learn. Please ensure that every students has a calculator, ruler, pencil, eraser and maths notebook to bring to class.Homework is set regularly by all teachers. In addition to this, students should be using any additional time to focus on topics they may need extra assistance in. The school has purchased the resource “MyMathsonline” which can be accessed 24/7 by the website www.MyMathsonline.com.au . Many teachers are also setting homework electronically as there is a feature of self-marking and it also enables feedback to students and teachers. Please take the time to check out this invaluable resource. The generic username and password, along with individual U/P have been given out to students during class time however if you don’t have it, please contact me.Assessments in each year level have begun and will continue over the next 6 weeks. Work hard and your efforts will be rewarded!

With the gifts of a gold crystal sticker on their hand and licking a tongue-painting fl uoro lollipop, guests entered the gates of Redlynch State College on Wednesday

night, the 31st of July, to be part of the fabulous Arts Evening! The evening was offi cially opened by Mr. Peckham’s Welcome to Country speech, complete with a didgeridoo demonstration and fabulous dance number by our talented Indigenous Dance troupe. Next, guests were wowed by the RSGlee Club’s fi rst ever performance with the RSGleeks performing the motion movie “Picture Perfect’s” cult hit – “The Cup Song”. The RSGleeks then went on to perform their solos from classic folk songs to top 30 hits. Although nervous, all performed beautifully.Walking between the Performing Arts block and Creative Arts classrooms, guests were entertained by street theatre as provided by the Year 11 Drama students.

Some of this theatre included a group of nerds being chased by 80’s punks, Harajuku girls as dedicated celebrity fans (taking selfi es with the unsuspecting crowd) and the members of YMCA who had the crowd “fl ash mobbed” into dancing with them – on numerous occasions!Guests lucky enough to get a seat in the packed-house auditorium viewed Ms. Parker’s amazing Dance concert, being entertained by musical theatre numbers, hip hop performances and the senior Dance class performing a contemporary movement piece.Outside the dance concert guests were invited to pick up a piece of coloured chubby chalk and to contribute their own works of art to the pavement. By the end of the evening this large space was awash in colour with assorted images of making their outdoor gallery debut.Speaking of galleries, guests next sauntered into the Creative Arts

classrooms where the walls rivalled those of Brisbane’s GOMA! Self-portrait canvases, light instalments, shoe arts and snowboard designs were all just some of many examples of the amazing talents of Mrs. McLeod’s, Ms. Smith’s and Mrs. Webber’s Visual Art students. Live works of art, such as having your manga caricature portrait drawn by senior Art student Phoebe were available as well as teacher live demonstrations. At the end of this block guests enjoyed sitting in the movie-style cinema of Mr. Blackwell’s classroom, watching on the big screen short fi lms as produced by the talents of Media Studies and Film, TV and New Media students.

In the Chalk and Talk Cafe, Ms. Lockey’s senior Music students wowed guests as they performed solo pieces of contemporary and classic music. Visiting the Hospitality Café guests were invited to enjoy the complimentary platters and tea and coffee, prepared by the hard working Hospitality students under the watchful eyes of Ms. Findlater. Resting their feet in this comfortable café, guests were impressed by the talents of Mrs. Bonnie Allison, a professional local artist who, over the course of the evening, completed a beautiful work of art.

Finally guests were entertained by Mrs. Riles’ and Mr. Knight’s talented Drama students. Under the professional directions of Mr. McKenna’s backstage Senior Tech crew, Years 9, 10 and 11 Drama students made their stage debuts showcasing contemporary College student devised scripts, a laugh out loud Monty Python skit and scenes from the Australian thriller play “Wolf Lullaby”. After this hilarious entertainment it was time for guests to head home, but not before receiving their choice of colour, balloon modeled dog. What a fabulous night!

Jazzin’ with John Morrison and Jacki Cooper - Last Thursday, music students from across the College were the lucky recipients of a visit from two of Australia’s premier jazz musicians and performers, John Morrison and Jacki Cooper. Mr Morrison tutored several students in private drumming lessons in the morning, regaled students with entertaining, funny and inspiring stories of his many and varied experiences as a professional jazz musician and performer, and mentored Jazz Band in an after-school rehearsal. Throughout the day, he shared his encounters with famous musicians from all around the world, including his brother, brass phenomenon, James Morrison. Ms Cooper tutored 12 singers in private one-on-one tailored lessons, offering suggestions about repertoire for performance and giving proposing improvements to students existing singing techniques, confi dence levels and general performance etiquette. Ms Cooper was very impressed with our talented singers and the exemplary behaviour of all the students

involved. The highlight of the day for many was the workshop with Mr Morrison. He began the session with a performance of one of his own compositions, coaxing the school drum kit to yield sounds unlike many of the noises usually associated with those a drum kit produces. Morrison’s favourite mantra, “repetition is the mother of skill”, is motivating and inspiring our budding musicians and performers to make greater efforts with practice and to continue to work to do their very bests at everything they try to do. All in all, Redlynch State College students were truly privileged to have received instruction from such down- to- earth, enthusiastic, and passionate music educators. The Morrison/Cooper duo was defi nitely a quality way to spend a fantastic musical day, and a refreshing insight into the world of the professional musician. Both Morrison and Cooper have promised to return early next year with further opportunities for lessons and workshops for students involved in both Classroom and Instrumental Music 2014.Ilga Lockey

REMINDERTraffic/Access Road Procedures

At Redlynch State CollegeThe following is just a reminder for all Parents regarding the Access Roads at Redlynch State College. Due to the volumes of traffic and more importantly, for the safety of all children at Redlynch State College please abide by the following Traffic and Parking Rules.

They are as follows:

1) The Speed Limit along the Access Roads on the P-6 Campus as well as the 7-12 Campus is 10 Km/Hr. Please ensure you abide by this limit as Traffic Police will regularly patrol the area.

2) There are Traffic Calming Devices (Speed Bumps) at Pedestrian Crossings (Zebra Crossings). Please note the Traffic Rule here is that at no time does a vehicle have right of way at a Pedestrian Crossing.

3) There are Yellow Pedestrian Crossings at both Staff Car Park entrances to signal/warn of Pedestrian traffic.

4) There are various Disabled Car Parks near the P-6 Campus Main Entrance Pedestrian Crossing and in each of the Parking Areas for access for disabled students and/or Parents and Guardians.

5) There are eight Parking Bays along the Kiss and Drop Zone. Please note that for safety and traffic flow you are required to move forward to the next available bay with each free space becoming available. Please also note that there is a Maximum 2 Minute Waiting Restriction between 2:30pm and 3:30pm in each of these bays for the whole Zone between the signs. Police will be regularly patrolling this area looking for incorrect parking within the Bays as well as Time Restrictions. Options after 2 minutes waiting time within the whole zone are to either drive around again or park to collect your child. At no time should you leave your vehicle when using the Kiss and Drop during the Sign Posted Time.

6) Please note also, advice from the Police Traffic Branch, is that under no circumstances should a vehicle enter a congested roundabout. Vehicles trying to enter the side access road to queue for the Kiss and Drop Zone should either drive back down Jungara Road to complete another circuit or park in the central Carpark to avoid blocking the roundabout. Police will be patrolling this area.

7) For safety, there are bollards along the No Standing Zone outside the Community Centre (Before/After School Building). Please ensure that you do not park (even for just a short time) along this zone or on the grass footpath as it creates high risk visibility concerns for children leaving the College. Police will issue fines for breaches of the No Standing Signs and Grass Footpath Parking.

8) Parking within the school grounds is for Staff and Deliveries only as per the signs on each gate. The only exception to this is the handful of parents/guardians with a permit who pick up students with disabilities near the Key Way. These parents must have a visible card which is provided by the SEU Head of Special Education Services.

Whilst we understand the frustration which comes with increased Traffic Volumes and ever increasing busy lives, at all times the safety of anyone’s loved one (which could be your own child) is paramount. We ask that you obey the Law as it applies to Parking and Traffic at all times.

Ways you can help reduce traffic are to consider:Walking to school if you live close by; Busy times are between 2:55pm and approximately 3:20pm so consider staggering pickup times; Having your child ride to school if they have the skills and it is safe to do so; Car Pooling with friends/neighbours/relatives; Parking to pick up your child at the gate/under-covered area/class - parking is usually available between 2:00 and

2:45pm (please ensure you DO NOT park inside the school grounds on either campus as this creates a safety issue with children catching buses etc. and PLEASE use the Pedestrian Crossings to model/teach safe use of roads by pedestrians)

Unfortunately, there have been a few occasions where Staff on Kiss and Drop and Bus Duty has been verbally abused by disrespectful Parents/Guardians. Please keep in mind that any Staff on duty at the Kiss and Drop Zone and at the Bus Stop is there to ensure the safety of all children. If everyone abides by the Parking and Traffic Rules, all will get through the congestion as quickly and safely as possible.Together for the safety of the children.
