Reducing Vulnerability to Climate Change Impacts and Related Natural Disaster

Surabaya city is located in East Java Island, Indonesia. One hour flight from Jakarta, and four hours from Hong Kong.

Possessing the status as the 2nd biggest city in Indonesia, Surabaya is the capital and the central administration of

East Java Province.

It has a strategic role as a gateway to East Indonesia and it has grown as a center for trade and industry services in Indonesia,

South East Asia and the Asia Pacific region.

Response to the problem

Climate change impact and natural disaster is one of the main issues for Surabaya.

As a manifestation of its commitment, Surabaya has affirmed itself to implement development based on the principle of sustainability (article 33 of the 1945 Indonesia Constitution).

The aim is to secure the welfare of both the existing and future generation.

Despite the action of all Surabaya’s stakeholders to lessen negative impact of climate change and related natural disaster, the overall strategic measures in Surabaya still needs greater improvement in the future.

Surabaya’s administrative and regulatory framework remains inadequate to cope with the problems and the law enforcement is weak.

The need for urgency of action on climate change impacts and related natural disaster is absolutely needed.

Through the international cooperation of international cities, we can collaborate and support each other to maximize our efforts to reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts and related natural disasters in our region.
