EarthWise Throughout2005weworkedwithCambridgeandNorthDumfries Hydro on a unique package of electricity conservationmeasuresaddedtotheEnerGuideevaluation.Lookingbackwesee
both successes (much greater participation)and challenges (reaching electrically-heatedhomes).Customerswerepleasantlysurprisedtoreceivefreeenergyefficient lightbulbsatthetimeoftheirevaluation,aswellasareportshowinghowtheirappliancescomparetothebestavailableintermsofelectricityconsump-tion.85,904kilowatthoursofelectricityweresaved through thecompactfluorescent lightbulbprogramin2005.
Follow-up with customers a year after they received the electrical inventory showed
that many had acted on our advice:l 80% added more compact fluorescent light bulbs, with 3/4 of them adding 5 or morel 38% added, or were planning to add, at least one new Energy Star appliancel 19% added an Energy Star air conditioner.
TheEarthWisepartnershipincludedincen-tivesofupto$1,500forcustomerstoswitchto solar water or geothermal heating. The
results to date have been surprising: much greater uptake of thegeothermal incentive than solar, although geothermal is a moreexpensiveundertaking.Onesignificant factor is that thegeother-malincentiveisopentoallEarthWisecustomers,whereasthesolarincentive is limited to those with electric water heating (approxi-mately13%ofhomes).
Public interest in solar continues to be high, however, as we sawinNovemberattheSolarPublicForumweheldattheCambridgeSchoolofArchitecture.Over120peoplecametohearPresidentandCEOofCambridgeandNorthDumfriesHydroJohnGrotheerandretired professor emeritus Terry Hollands, who explained solarthermalenergypossibilities.
