Biographical history: Sichel, Peter Robert (b.1946)

Born in September 1946 in Pinner, Middlesex and childhood spent in Libya, Scotland and

Hong Kong. He became a novice De La Salle brother and adopted the name Brother Peter

Aelred before leaving the order in 1964. In 1965 joined the 21 SAS Regiment (Artists) TA

in 1965, and was a founder member of R Squadron 22 SAS Regiment in 1967. Joined D

Squadron, 22 SAS Regiment in 1970 and served in Dhofar on ‘Operation Storm’, after

which became a contract officer in Firqat Force, Sultan of Oman’s Army. In 1975 joined

the Civil Aid Department of the Wali of Dhofar’s Office and was supervisor for the post-

war development of the Jebel. During this period completed the first demographic survey

of Dhofar, and coordinated the disaster relief program following the cyclone of 1977. In

1980 was appointed Director of Operations of the Musandam Development Committee,

and completed the first demographic survey of Musandam. Left Oman in 1984, and after a

period spent in London became a Registered General Nurse specialising in critical care, in

which he holds a degree. Retired in 2006, and wrote the book ‘A Monk in the SAS’ under

a nom de plume, which describes his life until 1984. Sichel is married with one son and

works part time for Combat Stress.

Scope and content: Papers relating to the work of Peter Sichel in Oman during the period

1965-1984. Including the first demographic surveys of Musandam and Dhofar and the

research taken in order to complete the reports. Also correspondence and internal staff

memos relating to the development of Oman, and official reports on social, political, local

progress. Copies of slides and photographs taken by Sichel of Oman, including those used

in talks that he gave in the 1980s referring to development in Oman. The collection also

includes maps used by the military and publications relating to Oman during this period.

copy of the completed surveys and papers

consisting of research notes. Surveys created as

part of civil development programme instigated by

Sultan Qaboos bin Said in order to plan local

government centres in tribal areas.

route from the Emirates to Pakistan in July 1983

when it caught fire in Khawr Qidda (GR 2298).

A passing Musandam Development Committee

water boat ( MV Khasab) under the command of

Captain Khalifa, rendered assistance. The dhow
