I’ve known Vasco Alberto Filipe Ribeiro, first as a Biochemistry teacher and 

later as his supervisor during his final degree project and his Master’s thesis. 

Vasco is a bright student and a committed researcher, eager to learn new 

techniques and to solve the experimental problems that he encounters. He is a 

quick  learner  and  becomes  very  independent,  soon  after  learning  any  new 

technique. He approaches every new challenge by thinking carefully about the 

experimental  problems  and  suggesting  a ways  to  approach  them.  During  his 

Masters’  thesis  experimental  work,  he  has  been  able  to  overcome  major 

problems by searching for new approaches to the problems. 

During  the  two  time periods he was under my  supervision, Vasco Ribeiro 

has acquired skills in the fields of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, mainly in 

the  cloning  and  over‐expression  of  recombinant  proteins  in  Escherichia  coli, 

Electrophoretic Mobility  Shift Assay  (EMSA)  to  study  protein‐DNA  interaction, 

and  in  biochemical  and  spectroscopic  characterization  of  proteins,  using UV‐

visible, EPR and Mössbauer spectroscopies.  

As a Biochemistry  teacher and his Masters supervisor,  I can say  that he  is 

one of the brighter and hardworking students that I ever had. I fully support his 

application and I am sure he will be successful in any field of science he decides 

to pursue.
