We gather every Sunday to take part in the Breaking of Bread and the Breaking of the Word of God, therefore it is our re- sponsibility to ensure that what we gather to celebrate makes inroads into our family life and work place, our professional life, our business practices, and our rela- tionships otherwise we live like people with no hope. The challenge of today’s readings is obedience to the will of God at all times which made Christ to offer up his own life for us. Let us pray to Christ to help us keep our bap- tismal promises of keeping God’s laws at all times no matter our circumstances. Reflection Corner The central truth of our Christian religion and the basic motivation of our Christian lives is that our kingdom is not of this world; we are living and working for the king- dom prepared for us by God’s eternal and infinite love. This truth has been revealed to us through God’s Incar- nate Son Jesus Christ who died on the cross for us, was raised on the third day, and thus gave us hope of eternal life. This faith inspired and sustained the first-century Apostles and the early Christians and has continued to inspire us during our own time. This Sunday’s readings put responsibility on our individual free will. It is our will, our personal decision to obey or disobey God that will inflame this faith we have of eternal life or dwindle it. In the first reading, the echo of what the prophet Ezekiel told his audience in the Old Tes- tament resounds among us, that each one of us is re- sponsible to God for his or her actions. While it is true that the bad example of parents, leaders, or companions, may play a part in our guilt, it is our personal decision borne out of our freewill that produces a sin and not that bad example. A sinner can always decide on his or her own to turn away from a sinful life to do what is pleasing to God, likewise a good and holy man can decide freely to turn from God and commit sin. Each person is held account- able for his/her own actions. Therefore we have to watch over ourselves and our actions to avoid allowing our incli- nations to deceive us. We should always trust in the bountiful mercy of God for help in time of great tempta- tions. In the Gospel, Christ used the parable of the two sons to teach us that being in good relationship with God requires words and deeds. Even though the first son who said “No” to his father’s request to go to his farm and work later obeyed did the will of his father, yet God would al- ways want it best for all to say “Yes” with courage and then obey with fidelity. Obedience to the will of God is not optional; therefore this parable pushes for integrity of life before God. Talk and external appearance are easily on focus; what counts is actually doing the will of the Father from the heart. We cannot say we believe without putting into practice what we believe otherwise such a belief or faith is dead in itself. The Christian faith and teachings

October - Month of the Holy Rosary

The month of October is dedicated to Our Lady of the Most Holy Ro-sary. This is due to the fact that the liturgical feast of Our Lady of the Rosary is celebrated annually on October 7. It was instituted to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection that she gives to the Church in answer to the praying of the Rosary by the faithful and to remember the victory of the Christian fleet in the Battle of Lepanto on Octo-ber 7, 1571. During this month of October, let us pray the rosary to be grow closer to Jesus and Mary and to bring peace and holiness to our world.

Safeguard the Children Did you Know? Knowing Internet lingo can help par-ents safeguard children Online chat rooms, instant messaging systems, and even cell phones equipped to send text messages are environments rich in abbreviations, acro-nyms, and other shorthand that help increase the speed of communication. Parents need to become aware of some of the common lingo that is used in these environments. Some of these terms may be found to be vulgar, degrading, or otherwise offensive. However, parents and educators need to have a level of understanding of the dangers that face our children. For particular help or for more information, you may call Assistance Ministry at (213) 637-7650.
