From The Pastor’s Desk After Christmas and Easter, Ash Wednesday Masses are the most attended liturgies of the year. It was good to see so many parishioners and visitors at the four Masses last Wednesday. Lent is off to a good start.

For your benefit, we are glad to offer a Parish Mission with Father Johnpaul Cafiero, OFM, starting this Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m., in the Church. The Parish Mission is a time of prayer and spir-itual renewal. It will continue on Monday and Tuesday evenings at 7:00 p.m. Please make every effort to attend.

You are also encouraged to attend the Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings during Lent. Stations begin at 7:00 p.m., in the Church and last for about thirty minutes. After a long week (and after a great St. Alphonsus Fish Fry), it is nice to spend the time walking the road to Calvary with the Lord. Stations of the Cross are one of my very favorite devotions. Everyone is welcome, in-cluding the very young.

The Vocations Committee invites you to join us for a special rosary offered for the intention of an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. There is a great need for people to de-vote their lives to service in the Church as ordained men and consecrated men and women. The Vocations Rosary will take place on Sunday, March 24, at 10:15 a.m., in the Chapel. Come and pray for the needs of the Church.

One of the prayers we pray at the Stations of the Cross is as follows:

We adore You, O Christ, and we praise You, because by Your holy cross, You have redeemed the world.

In this holy Lenten season, may we grow in our love for Jesus Christ and His Holy Cross.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

-Fr. Aaron J. Esch

Pray the Rosary for Vocations

Please join us in praying the Rosary for the intention of an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. We will gather in the Chapel at 10:15 a.m., on Sunday, March 24. May the Lord raise up shepherds after his own Heart.

Outreach Sunday The third Sunday of each month, excluding the months of Christmas and Easter, has been set aside as Outreach Sunday by the Pastoral Council. All loose monies and checks made out to St. Alphonsus Outreach Program will be given to the charity selected by the Out-reach Committee for that month. For March, the Outreach Committee has chosen Project RETURN as its charity for the month.

Project RETURN is a faith-based ministry, that provides prison after-care support to help men and women leaving prison successfully assimilate to society and make a positive, permanent return to their community.

The St. Alphonsus Outreach Committee is asking for your generous support of the Project RE-TURN on the weekend of March 16/17. We thank you for your generosity.

Faith Formation Food Drive Our students in the Middle School and High School Faith Formation Program will be collecting food for Capuchin Community Services. This program serves both the House of Peace and St. Ben’s Community Meal Program. The students in the Grade School Faith Formation Program did a collection for the Capuchins at Thanksgiving. While that drive helped to provide a specific meal to families, this drive will help to stock their food pantry shelves during the colder months. It will be the same convenient process of picking up a box, (available today near the parish library), filling it with the items listed under “food pantry,” and bringing it back by March 17.

For those who are not able to fill an entire box, separate items will be accepted. A list of items needed is printed on the box under Food Pantry. *Be careful to follow the items listed under food pantry and not under holiday food drive. Boxes are due March 17, by noon.

Thank you in advance, on behalf of the students and myself, for your generosity and the learn-ing opportunity this provides them. -Julie Petri, Director of Religious Education

Fish Fry Saint Alphonsus’ famous fish fry began last week. The fish fry is not only a great Friday night dinner, but it’s a great way to meet others from St. Al’s and around the community. Make sure to mark your calendars. Fish fry runs every Friday from 4:30-7:00 p.m., throughout Lent. Fish Fry dates are:

March 15, March 22, March 29, April 5, April 12 & April 19 (Good Friday).

Check out the St. Alphonsus website for more information.

We can't thank our volunteers enough for supporting fish fry every week. Fish fry really takes our entire church and school communities coming together to be successful and fun for every-body. We encourage everyone to check out the sign up and volunteer some time to help out. There is something for all. We'd love your help; fish fry truly is not possible without you.

Good Friday Ecumenical Walk And Service It’s been a long Good Friday ecumenical tradition in the Greendale area that members of the various churches gather before the procession with the cross starting at NOON, at St. Thomas of Canterbury Episcopal Church, stopping at St Luke’s Lutheran Church and then at the Community Church before arriving at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church for a Prayer Service at 1:00 p.m. Various clergy will offer reflections on the SEVEN LAST WORDS Jesus spoke as he hung on the cross.

You and your family and friends are invited and encouraged to participate in all or part of this observance of GOOD FRIDAY on April 19. We hope to see you there.

St. Alphonsus Men’s Group This month, the Men’s Group will meet next Sunday, March 17, in the Narthex area of the Church ten minutes before the start of the 7:30 a.m. Mass.

School Scene Sixth grade students begin their study of the irregular verb, ir, which means to go to in preparation for the annual Spanish field trip into the Hispanic community. There they will be immersed in the culture and communicate in Spanish outside of the classroom setting. Though this verb can be challenging, it can be fun.

We begin by learning the grammatical structures and necessary vocabulary through formal instruc-

tion followed by practice through the song, ”Vivir mi Vida,” by Marc Anthony. The students then

write a rhythm to demonstrate understanding and to allow for more oral use of the language. The

final lesson is the Spanish field trip where Spanish is used in an authentic setting and not just in

the classroom. This activity allows the students to demonstrate extended reasoning.

Over the next five weeks of Lent in our “call to worship,” we will hear reflections from those who stood at the foot of the cross when Jesus was crucified. We will hear from the following people: Week one: Mary, the sister of Lazarus; Week two: Peter; Week three: a Disciple; Week four: Simon of Cyrene and finally in Week five: the Roman Soldier.

Jesus’s mother, Mary, in her grief must have felt that the injustice of the cross would bring salvation to the world. What went through the mind and heart of our Blessed Mother, as she stood faithfully by her Son in His last agony? As a loving mother, she would have pondered every moment of His precious life and every experience she had with Him. She would have pondered His conception, His birth, His presen-tation in the temple, His public ministry, His passion and death and so much more.

Mary faced the Cross of her Son with perfect faith, love and devotion. Her fidelity to her Son throughout His life was unwavering. As she stood before the Cross during those long three hours, that fidelity nev-er ceased.

The strength of our Blessed Mother was unmatched. She, and she alone, could have stood at the foot of the Cross gazing in faith and perfect trust, as she watched her Son endure His sacrifice. However, it was the will of the Father in Heaven that she not endure this alone. She was given certain spiritual companions, with whom she would walk through this suffering.

It is not the will of God that we face the hardships of life alone. Even if we were as strong and immaculate as our Blessed Mother, we could still be certain that God would want us to face the challenges of life with the assistance and consolation of others. Human life is made for

communion with one another. Offering and receiving strength and consolation is an im-portant part of who we are. Therefore, we must allow this holy scene at the foot of the cross to remind us of our need for the spiritual friend-ship of others. We must daily seek to embrace those friendships that God has given us and be open to new ones that He sends our way.

Reflect, in this first week of Lent, upon two things. First, reflect in grati-tude upon the people in your life who act as a source of strength and support in times of need. No one but Jesus and our Blessed Mother will be a perfect support, but if we are open, we will come to realize that there are many whom God uses to offer us strength and support in various ways. Reflect, also, upon those who need your spiritual friend-ship. Who has God placed on your heart to reach out to and to con-sole? Stand with them, at the foot of their daily crosses, and together you will be gazing at our Lord Himself.

We thank all those who helped prepare the church this Lent. A special thanks to those who helped form the rocks for our Sanctuary. A special shout out to the 20 young people that made the afternoon most enjoy-able for us all. What a great bunch of young adults. Thanks to the choirs who are working so hard for Lent, Holy Week and Easter. You are all amazing.

May the Cross of Christ be in your heart this Lent,

-Terry Piontkowski

First Sunday of Lent There are some people who can look at an old house, or an empty room, and see all the possibilities, exactly what it will look like before a single thing is done. In their mind's eye, they picture a home, with walls fixed and painted, woodwork stained, repairs made and carpet installed. Fore-seeing the final outcome is an extraordinary gift that guides the work of making things new again.

Believers have an advantage as they observe their Lenten practices. They know the out-come, they see the final result, and in their mind's eye are witnesses to the resurrection, even as they fast, sacrifice and pray. The final victory of Jesus on Easter morning is what defines Lent, guiding the faithful's penance and preparation. We are given an extraordi-nary gift that allows us to make room for Christ in our hearts and minds and souls.

Don't be stingy, or fearful, or hesitant. Like the renewal of an old home, the best renova-tions cut deep, removing all that is useless and decayed, and replacing it with good and sound material. The pain and difficulty of sacrifice makes room for grace, helping us to achieve the vision and foresight of Ash Wednesday: turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel! (c) Liturgical Publications Inc.

Question Of The Week Theme: Lent is a time to open our hearts more fully to Jesus.

Question for Youth: What is one thing you will do during Lent to become more open to God in your life?

Question for Adults: As you come to understand the temptation of Jesus in the desert, which one of the devil’s offerings is hardest for you to resist?

After a tasty, full breakfast, catered by Carl’s, the men will enjoy an engaging presentation by Fr. Brad Krawczyk, “‘Do Not Be Afraid; From Now On You Will Be Catching Men,” Questions about Water, Boats, and Land in the Lives of Catholic Men.

Tuesday, March 19, 7:00-8:30 p.m. “What About St. Joseph?” with Jim Gill, M.A.

St. Alphonsus Community Room

For the major role he plays in salvation history, Joseph is a relative mystery to most of us. On this Solemnity of Saint Joseph, spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we’ll look at what we know of Joseph from the Gospels, and what the life of Joseph can inspire us to be and do as witnesses of Christ in the world today. After the presentation, we’ll celebrate the feast with a simple social in the Gathering Space. No registration needed; no fee.

Jim Gill is Associate Director of Programming at the Siena Retreat Center, Racine. He has minis-tered in parishes in adult formation and as a free-lance speaker throughout the Milwaukee Archdio-cese for 37years.

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Jesus returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit

into the desert for forty days, to be tempted by the devil. He ate nothing during those days, and when they were over he was

hungry. The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, command this stone to

become bread." - Lk 4:1-3
