Recent empower legislation has emphasized both the necessity formeaningful intonation on the availability of workers to meet employerrequirements and the need to relate training progress to employmentopportunities. This publication is co/directory of selected EmploymentService studies intended to provide current local occupational inform -tion for use in designing training progress, for counseling in localpublic employment offices and schools, end to offer individual jobseekersand vocational counselors concrete information on job opportunities inspecific occupations or groups of occupations. Under the United StatesEmployment Service's Job Opportunities Information Program establishedten years ego, affiliated State employment security agencies have con-ducted surveys and prepared periodic reports on job opportunities andother occupational manpower information. Included in this publicationare two principal types of local occupational information developed endexpanded as a part of this program--occupational guides and area skillsurveys.

Occupational Guides, cross-indexed by occupation and area in this publi-cation, are prepared by State employment services and provide a concisesummary of the job duties and employment prospects for a single' occupationor group of occupations in a particular area or State. These Job Guidesalso contain information on the characteristics of the occupation, trainingand experience requirements, local training facilities, methods of entry, and promotional opportunities as well as information on wages and workingconditions for the job. Of special interest to 'Acme .concernedvith jobmarket and general occupational information on entry jobs are the Job Guidescovering selected occupational fields or special worker groups. Eighteenof these Job Guides are addressed to young workers or high school graduates.

Area Skill Surveys are designed to provide comprehensive information ofcurrent employment and future labor requirements in individual labor areas. These studies relate comity manpower resources to anticipated long-termoccupational requirements, generally two to five years ahead. Almost 1110

such surveys are currently available and an additional 44 are in progressor in the planning stage.

In Part I, the guides are listed by occupational group and by occupationwithin the occupational. groups.

Pest II contains a listing, by State, of occupational guides.
