Thermodynamics and Refrigeration Processes

Electricity, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering

Growing demands for energy efficiency of refrigeration and air conditioning plant, new refrigerants, more complex regulations, new

plant conceptions and customer-specific solutions are all challenges being faced by engineers in the refrigeration and air conditioning

sector. To ensure that the engineers can meet those challenges, they need intensive and technically specific training in both funda-

mentals and advanced areas.

Mechanics and Manufacturing

Electricity, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering

Electricity, Electrical Engineering and Information Technology• Electrically operated open- and closed-loop control

• Methods for starting compressors

• Safety measures and safety hierarchy

Mechanics and Manufacturing• Practical skills

• Assembly of refrigeration facilities

• Handling the materials used

A career for mechatronics engineers in refrigeration involves a variety of key aspects. Engineers need to possess knowledge covering

manufacturing and electrical engineering as well as their skills in refrigeration technology. For all the three subject areas quoted abo-

ve, Lucas-Nülle can provide training systems which ensure effective and reliable training in refrigeration technology.

Experimenting, Learning, Testing and Understanding

Control of machines and motor drives is a key aspect of refrigeration, air conditioning and ventilation systems. The training program

covers the safety and functionality of controllers and optimisation of control circuitry in a wide variety of applications. Specific atten-

tion is paid to the energy efficiency of the control systems and motor drives.

The training contents are focused on various motor drives, including three-phase asynchronous motors, Dahlander motors and even

partially wound motors controlled by means of a variety of sensors, controllers and contactors.

Training is supported by an extensive multimedia course, designed to enhance the self-directed learning skills of trainees and students.

5

The focal point of this training module is the refrigeration cycle or circuit. Various compressors, valves and other components inside

the refrigeration cycle are investigated in a real cooling cell under varying conditions. The effects of refrigerant quantity, external

temperature or even faulty components in the refrigeration circuit are also topics of focus here. The training also covers proper and

environmentally sound handling of refrigerants when filling and evacuating the system.

Training content • Design and function of the refrigeration cycle

• Connection of the system components using hoses, wit-

hout distribution to the closed refrigeration circuit

• Connection of the 4-way manometer station

• Pressure test with nitrogen as rough leakage test

• Commissioning, leak detection and sealing test

• Evacuation and drying

• Handling coolant cylinders

• Set-up, function, setting as well as testing the safety

mechanisms (HD; ND)

• Testing and setting correct heating parameters

• Comparing and evaluating the measured variables under

varying system operating conditions

• Operating response of the refrigeration circuits under

varying load

• Recycling refrigerants

• Decommissioning the refrigeration system

Benefits • Components in refrigeration systems and what they do

• Realistic refrigeration chamber

• Training seminars on commissioning a refrigeration system

• Detailed set-up animations

• Planning in cooperation with Germany’s leading school for

refrigeration technology

• Modular utility::

- RCC2.1 Modular refrigeration trainer R134a

- RCC2.2 Supplementary equipment set to RCC2.1

- RCC2.3 Capillary tube system (supplement)

Training Practical Skills and Abilities

Handling coolants (R134a, R404 and others) or test gases such as nitrogen requires a high degree of special know-how. In this topic,

students are trained in filling, flushing and maintaining refrigeration systems by means of simple experiments.

A simple refrigeration heat cycle and the physical processes involved are demonstrated by means of educationally designed multi-

media software. All measurements can immediately be documented by means of interfaces with the digital measuring and testing

instruments.

The refrigeration circuit is to be optimised by means of various open-loop controllers and other components. This allows trainees and

students to become familiar with designs of refrigeration systems for a variety of applications.

7

Training content • Complete assembly of a proper refrigeration pipe installation

• Complete connection of electrical cabling for a refrigeration

system

• Handling of refrigerants, including safe filling and removal

• Commissioning, leak detection, sealant testing

• Parallel operation of various evaporation stages with a

compressor

• Generating control voltage in accordance with EN60204-1

• Safety chain, oil pressure differential safety monitoring

• Time-dependent control circuits

• Controls using thermostats and pressurestats

• Circuits with main and auxiliary contact-ors in manual and

automatic operation

Practical Application of Refrigeration Technology and Electrical Engineering

The refrigeration workshop gives you the opportunity to encourage the manual skills of trainees more so than is possible with the

refrigeration lab. Subjects of electrical engineering are covered as well as refrigeration itself. Students taking part in the course are

guided step by step through the aspects of refrigeration, providing them with a high-quality basis for future work. Plumbing of

refrigerator piping is just one of the many skills that can be learned with the help of the refrigeration workshop. The vast collection

of electrical circuitry covers the widest range of applications.

Benefits • Implement different application conditions

• Combine several cells into a cell aggregate

• Planning in cooperation with Germany’s leading college for refrigeration

• Use of industry-relevant components

• Complements the equipment set for training to become “Mechatronics specialist for refrigeration technology“ for

cross-disciplinary purposes

• RCW1 Assembly and operation of fundamental refrigeration processes

• RCW2 Assembly and operation of advanced refrigeration processes

Training to Secure Skills in More Advanced Applications

The expanded equipment set for the refrigeration workshop is designed for more advanced and specialized training. With additional

equipment other system types can be explored and worked on. For example, several cooling cells can be combined to form a com-

plex aggregate system. Thanks to the use of industrial components, training can involve more advanced scenarios and in this fashion

additional skills and qualifications in refrigeration technology acquired. The refrigeration workshop is also well suited for training and

testing for the master craftsman qualification

Decisive Product Benefits

… ensure Long-term Customer Satisfaction

Jörg Peters, managing director of the Federal College of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology:

”The Federal College of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Technology has successfully been working together with Lucas-Nülle for

many years. The college is one of the largest training establishments in refrigeration and air conditioning technology at both national

and international level.

The success of the college’s training methods at fundamental and advanced levels on all its sites, Maintal (Hessen), Harztor (Thürin-

gen) and Leonberg (Baden-Württemberg) has to a great extent been made possible by its having been fully equipped with jointly

developed training facilities.

Teaching and training systems supplied by Lucas-Nülle are used by the college in its refrigeration and electrical engineering labora-

tories as well as in its refrigeration workshops. Workplaces are available for all its advanced courses, master qualifications, technical

studies, for seminars and special training, as well as for the college’s modular study series. Our trainees, as well as masters and tech-

nicians to be, all appreciate the way the training equipment stays close to authentic practice. The accompanying “teachware” helps

them to understand to subject matter better and to put it into practice themselves.

The ongoing joint development of the training systems in respect of the demands for energy efficiency and environmental protection

is one more challenge that the college and Lucas-Nülle are happy to be tackling.”
