How to use
How to use the Selection ChartsThe selection charts on pages 4 to 15 of this brochure have been put together to make the specification and ordering of complete systems quick and easy.
To use this guide you need to know what temperature you wish to maintain, the Product Storage Conditions Chart on page 35 has more information.
Once you know the temperature, follow these simple step by step instructions and, when you have completed your specification, call your local HRP Service Centre for competitive pricing and fast delivery.
Selection CriteriaThe Systems listed in the Selection Charts are top quality brand products, and have been chosen to provide the installer with a ready-matched complete system to suit various applications:
• Frozen Food • Cool Storage • Food Preparation • Beer Cellars
Condensing Unit requirements can vary depending on location, space restrictions, compressor type and client preference.
Various Housed and Un-housed Units are included in the Selection Charts, from top brand manufacturers for whom HRP acts as a major Wholesaler.
The Penn Cold Room Controller suits all Cooler & Condensing Unit Systems in the Selection Charts, and is a reliable and recognised brand product.
The System Selection is completed with a Tube Pack consisting of:
• Copper Tube - 15m suction & liquid tube • Isoline Insulation - 15m (or equivalent)
HRP can also provide other manufacturers’ brand products, plus bespoke Dressed Units for particular applications - please refer to pages 28 to 30, or contact our Sale Support Controllers at your local HRP Service Centre.
HRP also supplies an extensive range of Capital Equipment from small panel evaporators to large industrial coolers, plus Semi-Hermetic and Scroll Condensing Units, Compressor/Receiver Units, Air-cooled and Water-cooled Condensers, etc., based on the latest range of commercially available refrigerants.
Quick & Easy Selection ChartsThe Chart allows the installer to make a quick and easy choice of the right product for the application, without the need for lengthy calculations or referral to tables and graphs.
The Chart represents a range of standard equipment selections designed to maintain an average room temperature as specified, based on the design criteria listed, relative to each Temperature Selection Chart.
The refrigerant pipework sizes are based on a maximum pipe run of 15 metres in a horizontal plane.
The Systems detailed in this brochure are for guidance only and do not form part of a Contract. Please refer to the criteria on which the Selection Charts are based, which are listed at the right hand side of each temperature application page. All goods are supplied subject to HRP Terms & Conditions.

The chart shows a range of standard equipment selections designed to maintain an average room temperature of -18ºC based on the following design criteria:-
a) Ambient Temperature 32ºC.
b) Evaporator Temperature difference between air on and evaporating (delta T1) 5ºC to 7ºC.
c) Coldroom constructed from 75mm polyurethane insulation to walls, ceiling and floor, with average door usage and no mechanical loading of produce.
d) The product loading has been based on a maximum of 64kgs per m3 of Coldroom volume entering the room at no more than 6ºC above room temperature.
e) The refrigerant line sizes are based on a maximum pipe run of 15 metres in a horizontal plane.
For Coldroom equipment selections outside the range set out in this table please contact your local HRP Service Centre.
All product storage conditions should be verified with the Coldroom user and the manufacturer of the product.
All equipment selections must be verified by the installer prior to installation.
*** The Power Supply shown equates to the total FLA of the Condensing Unit and Evaporator fans.
It assumes a defrost interlock such that defrost heaters and condensing units cannot operate at the same time.
POA: 1 phase control panels are available to special order for these applications.
The suitability of control panel application must be checked before the installation is undertaken.
The HRP SELECTOR DISC is available for other refrigeration applications not covered in this Selection Guide. Please contact your local HRP Service Centre.

Refrigeration Training Courses
Refrigeration Training Courses
Refrigerant Safe Handling C&G 2078 Although the City & Guilds 2078 qualification will be superseded in July 2011 by the City & Guilds 2079 qualification, the C&G 2078 is still the minimum requirement for Refrigerant Safe Handling. If Current certificates have lapsed the C&G 2078 can in the interim period be a temporary stepping stone to gain the C&G 2079.
Dependant on the candidates’ Skill Sets, two and five day courses are available, culminating in a Theory and Practical Assessment to C&G 2078.
F-Gas City & Guilds 2079The courses detailed below can be in continuation of the C&G 2078 stepping stone as detailed above, or as direct entry. We recommend the employment of the HRP Skill Scan to determine and tailor training to suit the individual’s needs.
For direct entry, it is recommended that attendees are competent, practicing Refrigeration / Air conditioning engineers.
With Pipework & Brazing being an integral part of the new F-Gas Assessment for both Cat 1 & 2. Candidates who have little or no experience of Oxy-Acetylene brazing would benefit by attending a relevant Pipework & Brazing course or Refresher prior to being assessed.
Details of Welding & Brazing Courses are available via The HRP Group Technical Centre.
WE RECOMMEND ALL CANDIDATES HAVE A ‘SKILL SCAN’ PRIOR TO CONFIRMING THE COURSE BOOKING.
1 Day RefresherThe object of the course is to allow the candidates to assess their present capabilities with regard to the requirements of the F-Gas qualification for both the theory and practical Element. The HRP Individuals ‘Skill Scan’ can help the candidate in deciding what training will be required to achieve the F-GAS 2079.
Note this course does not include any assessment to achieve the standards. Any further training and/or the Theory and Practical assessments would be booked on completion of the course.
2/3 Day CourseThis Course concentrates primarily on the Theory aspects of Refrigeration and assumes that an explanation and demonstration of the practical assessment is sufficient. Theory and Practical assessments would be booked during or on Completion of the course dependant on Location Circumstance and confidence of the Candidate.
Note: Day 3 is for assessments.
4/5 Day CourseThis Course concentrates on both the Theory and Practical aspects of Refrigeration in relation to the F-Gas assessment. Theory and Practical assessments would be booked during or on Completion of the course dependant on Location Circumstance and confidence of the Candidate.
Note: Day 5 is for assessments.
SummaryOn successful completion of the above courses and based on individual requirements the candidate will have acquired sufficient skills and knowledge to:
• Analyse system performance to determine efficiency• Demonstrate the ability to carry out an adequate leak test, using both
direct and indirect methods• Brazing and Jointing skills• Ability to identify refrigerant(s)• Charge and recover a zeotropic refrigerant• Pressure test and evacuate to BS-EN 378• Complete the required records to comply with F-Gas regulations• Dispose of all hazardous waste created in the correct legal manner
The assessment process for the above will include the two methods below:
• An online examination of 40 questions• A practical assessment of the candidates’ abilities to complete the
above tasks
It is intended that the above can be carried out at the majority of HRP outlets.
10 Day CourseAimed primarily at building service engineers, it would also suit engineers with a limited knowledge of the industry. This Course concentrates on both the Theory and Practical aspects of Refrigeration in relation to the F-Gas assessment. Each candidate’s progress is assessed daily to ensure that they achieve the outcomes as detailed above.
The City and Guilds 2078 can be used as a stepping stone as detailed above.
Theory and Practical assessments would be undertaken at appropriate times during the course dependant on progression and confidence of the Candidate. The course may be consecutive or non-consecutive weeks.

Refrigerants
In recent years, there have been many changes to the legislation governing the availability of refrigerants and more major changes will be implemented in the near future. The most significant is the banning of R22 (Virgin HCFC) from 1st January 2010.
New RefrigerantsHRP leads the way in the supply of refrigerants to the UK industry, in partnership with BOC Refrigerants. HRP provides a complete range of refrigerants in a variety of containers, from 1kg cans and dumpy cylinders, to 1000kg drums. Hydrocarbon, CO2 and Ammonia refrigerants are also available to special order.
HRP Service Centres are located throughout the UK and hold comprehensive stocks of refrigerant cylinders, plus engineers’ service tools and scales.
Refrigerant Waste Recovery Building owners, operators, landlords, auditors, leaseholders and tenants are now required by law to ensure any refrigeration plant or air conditioning systems, which contain refrigerant gas, must be properly de-gassed when the equipment is removed or scrapped.
Contractors and maintenance companies are now expected to provide an audit trail for the removal and reprocessing/destruction of these refrigerants in air conditioning split systems, heat pumps, vrf systems, roof-top units, chillers, etc. HRP has made this easy for all concerned.
Simplifying ProceduresHRP has provided a service for refrigerant ‘waste’ for the last 10 years, handling unwanted refrigerant and transferring it to its partner, BOC, for processing. HRP recognises refrigeration and air conditioning engineers do not like regulations, detest form filling, and have some fear, and possibly ignorance, of the legislation which now covers this subject. No one wants a visit from the ‘environment police’, or a hefty fine from the Environment Agency. No company director wants to be exposed for noncompliance.
To make things easy, HRP has produced a Consignment Form, in association with the Environment Agency, with much of the required information and coding already preprinted, allowing the contractor to follow several easy steps to comply with the Regulations.
HRP – Waste Refrigerant Processing HRP provides the following services from its 16 locations throughout the UK:
• Refrigerant Recovery Cylinders• Delivery and Collection service for registered companies• Consignment Forms for small and large cylinders, part completed, and simple to use• Forms include Waste Codes and UN Identification, plus Exemption References• Full responsibilities of the ‘Transfer Station’• Receiving cylinders containing waste refrigerant• Documentation for onward transfer and transport• Arrangements with BOC for analysis of waste refrigerants• Certificates for confirmation of re-processing or destruction
Engineers and Contractors ResponsibilitiesThe ‘waste producer’, i.e. the aircon or refrigeration contractor, must have the Minimum Qualification for engineers to remove refrigerant - City & Guilds 2078, or CITB equivalent. Training for these qualifications, and for F-Gas Inspection Training, are available at the new HRP Technical Centre and Training Facility, sponsored by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Air Conditioning, which is located in Slough. HRP also supplies, recovery equipment, gauge sets, protective gloves & goggles, and many other tools and timesaving devices.
HRP – Peace of MindRegulations, forms, certificates, and inspectors, can be irritating and time consuming to deal with. HRP provides a comprehensive service to the industry, and has greatly simplified the documentation requirement for waste producers.

When designing a refrigeration system it is important to select refrigeration equipment that will maintain the correct storage conditions for the product to be stored. The list below includes many of the products that require controlled conditions to keep them fresh and the ideal storage temperature range is shown for each product. The relative humidity under which unwrapped products are stored can affect the length of storage time and the weight loss that is experienced during storage, therefore each application should be checked to assess the correct cold room temperature and relative humidity conditions if unwrapped product is being stored, before the installation is undertaken. Further advise on product storage conditions is available from HRP on request. The chart below is colour coded to guide you to the correct refrigeration equipment selection chart.
