    President’s Pen

February is a short month, but is not short on

events. National Engineer’s Week takes place

from February 18-24, 2018. This is a weeklong

event to celebrate how engineers make a

difference, to increase public dialogue, and to

    introduce engineering to students and

    educators.

Locally, the Engineers Club and its affiliated

Associate Societies support many activities to

    serve Maryland students. Our ASHRAE

    Chapter sponsors a Green Building

Technology activity on Tuesday, Feb. 20th at

the Engineer’s Club. Thanks to Sam Philipp

and Rob Broczkowski for organizing the event.

The annual Fire Ball at the Mansion will take

place Saturday, February 24th. This event

    supports the Garrett-Jacobs Mansion

Endowment Fund which helps keep this

historic building alive and vibrant. Contact Kelly

    Daughtry ([email protected]) for

    sponsorship and ticket information.

See you at our next meeting / Refrigeration

Tour on Thursday, February 8th @ the

    Baltimore Convention Center.

    2017-2018 BALTIMORE ASHRAE REFRIGERATION TOUR

Thursday, February 8th, 2018 at 5:30 PM Baltimore Convention Center Chiller Plant

One West Pratt Street Baltimore, MD 21201

Tour space is limited, reservations based on first to respond.

Flat bottomed, closed toed shoes required—all other PPE shall be provided for tour.

The new chilled water plant improves energy efficiencies and reliability of district energy cooling.

The new 5,400 ton chilled water plant provides chilled water capacity to over 50 customers in Baltimore and 12 mil-lion square feet of space, including the Baltimore Convention Center and Maryland Stadium Authority.

With 48,000 ton-hours of ice storage capacity in two subsurface tanks, the plant can leverage nighttime electricity to support its electrical chilling demand during the day – reducing electricity use during peak daytime hours, taking pressure off the electrical grid when power usage is at its highest and creating redundancies to ensure chilled water demand.

    TOUR ROUTE – KEY FEATURES

    Variable primary chiller water plant

    (3) 1800 ton Trane duplex centrifugal chillers

    (4) 300 HP glycol pumps
