Un héritage forgéL’histoire de l’entreprise

La naissance de EJ date de 1883. William E. Malpass et son beau-père, Richard W. Round, créèrent une fonderie sur les rives du Lac Michigan, dans la petite ville d’East Jordan. La fonderie, nommée East Jordan Iron Works, produisait alors des pièces en fonte pour les machines, les bateaux, les rails, mais aussi pour l’industrie agricole et du bois d’œuvre. Peu après sa création, W. E. Malpass fit appel à son frère, James, un conducteur de machines travaillant à la journée, pour intégrer l’entreprise.Lors du déclin de l’industrie du bois, EJIW s’installa sur de nouveaux marchés qui lui permirent d’assurer sa pérennité malgré les transformations économiques. L’entreprise se

tourna vers la production de vannes d’adduction d’eau et de bornes d’incendie.Dans les années 1920 et 1930, William E. délégua progressivement la gestion de l’entreprise à ses 3 fils. Au cours des années 1950 et 1960, la troisième génération de directeurs émergea. Tirant profit du progrès technique, le fils de Will, W.E. «Bill» Malpass et le fils de Ted, W.E. «Bill» Malpass, transformèrent la fonderie en y instaurant l’automatisation dans la fonderie via la chaîne automatisée de moulage, mieux connue sous le nom de « Taccone Line ». Cette nouvelle génération d’équipements sophistiqués leur permit d’augmenter la productivité de l’entreprise de façon signifiante. Depuis le milieu des années 1980, la société est dirigée par la quatrième génération de la famille Malpass : par Fred Malpass, le fils de Bill Malpass ainsi que par Tracy et Tad Malpass, les enfants de Bruce Malpass.En conservant le même esprit entrepreneurial que celui entretenu par leurs prédécesseurs et fondateurs de la société, ils ont fait de EJ l’un des leadeurs mondiaux de l’innovation en matière de solutions d’accès aux infrastructures grâce à la modernisation de leurs services et à l’ouverture de nombreux bureaux commerciaux aux Etats-Unis. Parallèlement, l’entreprise a également acquit des fonderies en Europe NORINCO en France et CAVANAGH en Irlande ainsi que des agences commerciales qui lui ont permis de s’étendre à l’échelle mondiale. Aujourd’hui, EJ commercialise ses produits dans plus de 150 pays dans le monde.

A Legacy is CastCompany History

The creation of EJ dates back to 1883. On this date, William E. Malpass and his father-in-law, Richard W. Round, established a foundry on the shores of Lake Michigan in the little town of East Jordan. This foundry was called the East Jordan Iron Works and originally produced castings for machine parts,

ship parts, and agricultural parts, as well as railroads. Shortly after its founding, W. E. Malpass called upon his brother James, a day-wage engine driver, and asked him to join the company.

When the era of lumbering drew to an end, EJIW expanded into new markets—which allowed it to continue to be prosperous in spite of the changing times. The company shifted its production to street castings, water works valves and fire hydrants. In the 1920s and 30s, William E. gradually transferred management to his three sons.During the 1950s and 60s, the third generation of leadership emerged. Taking advantage of technological progress, Will’s son, W.E. «Bill» Malpass, and Ted’s son, F. Bruce Malpass, converted the foundry by installing an automated, high-pressure molding line, known as the Taccone Line. The new, highly sophisticated equipment significantly increased production capabilities for the foundry.Since the mid-eighties, the firm has been led by the fourth generation of Malpass family members: Fred Malpass, son of Bill Malpass, and Tracy and Tad Malpass, sons of F. Bruce Malpass.Using the same entrepreneurial spirit as the founders, they have transformed EJ into an international leader of innovative access solutions by modernizing its facilities and acquiring and opening additional branch operations across the United States—while expanding internationally by acquiring foundries in Europe and distribution centers. Today, EJ provides products for projects in more than 150 countries across the world.

Lift Assistance is provided by a corrosion-resistant stainless steel mechanical spring strut. The rugged design is clean andmaintenance free. The strut takes upless space in the clear opening thana traditional spring assist. It is fullyself-contained, which avoids highstress exposed coils.Made without internal gases orseals, the struts have an effectiveoperating temperature rangeof -34°C to + 200°C. The durability has been tested at over 150,000 cycles.Important In order to let the clear opening fully accessible the spring jack can be completely dismantled.

The normal exposure of cast iron to a moist atmosphere will generate a layer of rusty surface. If expsure continues, a protective rusty patina will cover the products, but without causing corrosion to heart.
