Regent College is running its traditional Easter Revision Courses this Easter Holiday from Monday 7th April 2014 to Sunday 27th April 2014.

Courses are available in Maths, Biology, Chemistry and Physics at AS and A-Level and in Maths, English and Science at GCSE and are of a 17.5 hour duration. We offer private tuition for all other subjects and can also form group courses if there are multiple enquiries for that same subject.

Full-Time enrolment at Regent College for RegentLearning Centre students

For most parents, the time has now come to consider full-time enrolment options for your son/daughter for their schooling from September 2014. Many parents may not be aware that Regent College, (which is managed by the same educational group as Regent Learning Centre), which is a co-educational, independent secondary school and sixth form college and which runs from our site in Rayners Lane, Harrow, offers full time courses in Years 10 &11, GCSE Intensive one-year courses, AS and A-Level. To learn more about the College and our high success rates, please visit the College’s website at www.regentcollege.uk.com. We are now taking enrolments for the 2014/2015 year and parents may arrange to speak to our Head Teacher, Mr Steve Hurl, to talk about what the College can offer your family. The College, being independent, is fee-paying, but preferential rates are offered to parents whose children are currently attending RLC classes. To arrange an appointment, please email the school office on [email protected] stating that you are an existing RLC parent.

Educational researchers have also found a strong correlation between reading and vocabulary knowledge. In other words, students who have a large vocabulary are usually good readers. This is not very surprising, since the best way to acquire a large vocabulary is to read extensively, and if you read extensively you are likely to be or become a good reader!

So if you want your child to be successful at school encourage him or her to read. Reading non-fiction in English is probably the most important, but English fiction and any reading - if done extensively and regularly - will help your child develop the reading competence that is essential for academic achievement. Lastly research has shown that children who read widely outperform children who do not read when it comes to success in mathematics!

Libraries and schools have reading lists that they recommend to students of all ages to give them a wide range of reading materials. The other positive outcome is just the enjoyments of reading a good book.

Reading Adds Up

Not only that, good readers can understand the organizational structure of a piece of writing. They can comprehend ideas, follow arguments, and detect implications. They will know most of the words in the text already, but they can also determine the meaning of many of the unfamiliar words. In summary, good readers can extract from the writing what is important for the particular task they are employed in. And they can do it quickly!

More often than not, when talking with parents and students, I ask the simple question, ‘Do you read?’ Students will smile, shyly look away and reply, ‘No, not really.’ This happens more with boys than girls. In fact, a recent survey indicated that only a quarter of school aged children actually pick up a book and read for themselves. As a matter of interest, there are more libraries in prisons than there are in schools!

The benefits of reading are well documented, and the big picture shows that there is a strong correlation between children who read achieving higher academic success than children who do not read.
