RegentScholarsRequirements
South Dakota high school graduates completing thefollowinghighschoolcourseswithnofinalgradebelowa"C"(2.0ona4.0scale)andanaveragegradeof"B"(3.0ona4.0 scale) shallbedesignatedasRegentsScholarsandshallbeeligibletoreceiveaRegentsScholarDiplomaupon request by a high school administrator to theDepartment of Education. High school graduatesdesignated as Regents Scholars automatically areadmittedtoallsixpublicuniversities.
• 4 units of English, with emphasis on grammar,composition,orliteraryanalysis;oneyearofdebatemaybeincludedtomeetthisrequirement.
• 4unitsofalgebra,geometry,trigonometry,orotheradvanced mathematics, including accelerated orhonorsmathematics(algebra)atthe8thgradelevel.
• 4 units of science, including 3 units of biology,chemistry, or physics in which at least one regularlaboratory period is scheduled each week;acceleratedorhonorsscience(biology,chemistry,orphysics)providedin8thgradeisacceptable.
• 3 units of social studies in history, economics,sociology,geographyorgovernment.

S.D.OpportunityScholarshipRequirements
To be considered for the scholarship you must be aresidentofSouthDakotaatthetimeofgraduation,haveanACTcomposite scoreof24orhigher (ora combinedverbal and mathematics SAT score of at least 1070),attendauniversity,college,ortechnicalschoolaccreditedby the North Central Association (NCA) that providesinstruction from a S.D. campus, enter into a programwithin 5 years of high school graduation, or 1 year ofreleasefromactivedutymilitaryservice(within5yearsofgraduation), and complete the high school courserequirementslistedbelow,withnofinalgradebelowaC(C-isnotaccepted)andacumulativeGPAof3.0ona4.0scale:
• 4unitsofEnglish.
• 4unitsofalgebraorhighermathematics.
• 4 units of science, including 3 units of approvedlaboratoryscience.
• 3unitsofsocialstudies.

SCHEDULECHANGESSince initial course requests require aparent signature, all schedule changeswill require a signed form fromaparentrequestingthechangeandspecifyingthereason(s)forthechange.Schedulechangesneedtoberequestedinthespecifiedtime-frametoaccommodatestaffingandschedulingneeds.Parentsneedtobeawareofschedulechangeimplications.Formsareavailableviathecounselors’website.
DROPPINGACLASSStudentsmaydropaclassinthefirstweekofthesemesterandpickupareplacementclass,providedthereisroominthereplacementclass.Acompletedschedulechangeformsignedbyaparentisrequiredforthisoranyotherchange.Studentswillbeexpectedtomakeupallworkmissedthefirstweekofthesemesterintheirnewcourse.Studentswishingtomakeachangeinayear-longclassafterthefirstsemestermustdosopriortosecondsemester.
STUDENTSWHODROPACLASSAFTERTHEFIRSTWEEKOFTHESEMESTERWILLRECEIVEAN“F”FORTHESEMESTER.ARequesttoDropaClassformisrequiredandavailablethroughthecounselor.
MANDATORYLENGTHOFENROLLMENT/MID-YEARGRADUATION/PARTIALRELEASEWhen registering during their junior year, studentsmay request formid-year graduation their senior year. Mid-yeargraduationmeans the student fulfills all remaining graduation requirements in the fall semester of their senior year.Therefore,thestudentdoesnotattendclassesinthespringsemester.Studentsmustmeetwiththeircounselorandthehighschoolprincipalinthespringpriortothesemestertheywishtograduate.Amid-yearcommencementceremonywillbe held as long as there are enough confirmed graduates. Studentsmay only participate in the graduation exerciseimmediatelyfollowingtheirlastsemester.
Providingastudenthasenoughcreditstobeclassifiedasaseniorduringthelastyearofattendance,studentsmayapplyforpartialrelease.Thesestudentsmustbeenrolledin2.5creditseachsemester.
RECOMMENDEDVS.REQUIREDAsastudentregistersitisimportanttoconsidertherecommendationsofacourse.Teacherswithinthedepartmentsetrecommendationsinthebestinterestofthestudent.Theyrecognizethedifficultylevelofeachcourseandsetstandardstobetterensuretheacademicsuccessofthestudent. Thefoundationofthecourseshouldbemastered inapreviouscourse.Ontheotherhand,somecourseshaverequirementswhichmustbemetbeforeenrollinginthecourse.
REPEATINGCOURSESStudentswhofailacourseareadvisedtorepeatitforcredit.Thetranscriptwillshowallgrades.Studentsmaychoosetorepeatacoursealreadypassed.Onlythemostrecentgradewillbecalculatedintothestudent’scumulativegradepointaverage.
CREDITRECOVERYStudentsthatretakeclassestoreplaceafailinggradeortoimproveagrademusttakeitinthesamecircumstanceastheoriginalclassforthe“F”orothergradetoberemovedfromtheirgradepointaverage(example:English10semester2needstobetakeninaBVHSclassroomwhereallofthestudentsaretakingEnglish10andasemestertestwouldberequiredsincethisisasophomorelevelcourse).Ifthecourserequiresasemesterexam,thestudentmusttakethesemesterexam.Allclassestakenoffcampusorthroughtheinternetmustbepreapprovedbythehighschooladministration.Theseclasses,whethertakenduringtheschoolyearorthesummermaymeetgraduationrequirementsbutpreviousgradeswillremainasapartofastudent’sgradepointaverage.

DUALCREDITAnystudentingrades11and12mayenrollincoursesinfallorspringsemesterwhichareofferedataninstitutionofhighereducationorpost-secondaryvocationaleducationinstitution.Thestudentshallobtaintheschooldistrict'sapprovalofthepost-secondarycoursepriortoenrollinginthecourse.Ifapproved,thestudentshallreceivefullcredittowardhighschoolgraduationaswellaspost-secondarycreditforthepost-secondarycourse.Theschooldistrictisnotresponsibleforanycostsinvolvedwithattendanceatthepost-secondaryinstitution.Ifastudentdropsafterthecollegedropdate,theywillreceivean“F”onbothtranscripts.Ifastudentdropsthecollegeclassbeforethedropdate,theywillreceivea“W”onbothtranscripts.Effective2014,theSDBORhasimplementedatuitionreductionfordualcreditforjuniorsandseniors.
CAREERANDTECHNICALACADEMYTheBrandonValleySchoolDistricthaspurchasedslotsintheSiouxFallsPublicSchoolDistrictCareerandTechnicalAcademy.Thisschoolwillofferover40stateapprovedCareerandTechnicalEducationcoursesinseveraldifferentcareerfocusedprograms.Thisstate-of-the-artAcademyoffersacontinuumofcoursesfromintroductoryleveltohighlyadvanced.Anystudentingrades10,11and12mayenrollinthefalland/orspringsemester.Counselorshaveinformationoncoursesandalistofclasses.Thefollowingfactorswillbeconsideredintheselectionprocess:1)courseappropriatenessbasedonpriorpreparation,2)paststudentperformanceinrelatedcourses,and3)previousattendanceandbehaviorrecords.
VIRTUAL/ONLINECOURSES(NOTBORclasses)TheSouthDakotaVirtualHighSchoolwillbetheonlyauthorizedproviderofvirtualhighschoolcourses.Theadministrationisdirectedtoperiodicallyreviewinstructionalmaterialsofvirtual/onlinecoursestoensuretheymeetprogramstandards.Further,suchcoursesmustprovidetheopportunityforrigor,andsubstantial,timelyinteractionsamongstaffandstudents.

Studentsapplyingforpermissiontotakeavirtual/onlinecoursewilldothefollowing:-Completeprerequisites.-Meetwithaschoolcounselortoassessthestudent’sabilitytofunctioneffectivelyinanonlinelearningenvironment.-ObtainthewrittenapprovalofthePrincipalorhis/herdesigneebeforeastudentenrollsinavirtualcourse.-AdheretotheDistrictcodeofconducttoincluderulesofbehaviorandconsequencesforviolations.-AdheretoattendancerequirementsoftheDistrict.-CompleteBVHSagreementsignedbyparentandstudent
• CREDITFORVIRTUALCOURSEWORK
Highschoolstudentsmayearnamaximumoffour(4)unitsofacademiccreditduringtheirhighschoolcareersunlessotherwise specified in the student’s 504 Plan or Individualized Education Plan to be applied toward graduationrequirements by completing virtual/online courses accredited by the South Dakota State Board of Education.StudentstakingsuchcoursesmustbeenrolledintheDistrict.Creditfromanonlineorvirtualcoursemaybeearnedinthefollowingcircumstances:-Thecourseisnotofferedatthehighschool.-Thehighschooldoesofferthecourseandthestudenthaspre-registeredforthecourse,butthestudentisunabletotakeitduetoanunavoidableschedulingconflict.
• COSTSFORVIRTUALCOURSEWORKTypically,virtualhighschoolclassesarepaidforbythestudent/student’sfamily,unlessBVHSadministrationdecidesdifferently.Studentswillberesponsibleforallcostsrelatedtovirtual/onlinecourseworkthatisnotprovidedthroughthedistrict.Creditsequaling.5perclasswillbeaddedtotheBVHStranscriptuponcompletionofthecourse.

WhatareAdvancedPlacement(AP),HonorsandCLEP,andshouldIsignupforoneoftheseclasses?
BrandonValleyHighSchooloffersavarietyofcoursesthatenableastudenttoearncollegecreditwhilestillinhighschool.BVHSalsooffersHonorslevelcoursesthatwillpreparestudentstobesuccessfulintakingcollegecreditclasses.Itisimportanttounderstandthenatureofthesecoursesbeforeastudentsignsupforoneofthem.Thesecoursescanbetakenformanyreasons.Themainreasonthatstudentstakesuchcoursesistohelpthempreparefortests,which,withahighenoughscore,theycouldearncollegecredit.Ifcollegecreditisthemainissue;itisimportantforthestudenttocheckwithcollegestoseewhattheywillandwillnotacceptinthewayofscoresandcredits.Somestudentstakethesecoursesbecausetheylikethechallengingcurriculumandwanttobearoundotherstudentswhoshareacommoninterest.Finally,somestudentstakethesecoursesbecausetheyhaveastronginterestinthesubjectmatterandwishtoexploreitingreaterdetail.Theunderlyingskillsnecessary for success inmostof thesecoursesarestrong readingcomprehensionskillsandanalyticalwritingskills.Studentsshouldexpectmorehomeworkinthesecoursesthantheirtraditionalcounterpart.Ahighschooladvancedplacement(AP)coursearecourseswithcurriculumapprovedbyTheCollegeBoard.InMaystudentscantakeanAPExamthatcanprovidethemwithcollegegeneraleducationcreditforatestfee,savingthestudentmoneyintuition.ToearncreditstudentsarerequiredtotaketheAPCourseExaminMay.TheAPExamscorerequiredtoearncollegecreditissetbythecollege/university.FormoreinformationaboutAPvisitwww.collegeboard.org.ACollege-LevelExaminationProgram(CLEP)allowsstudentstodemonstratetheirmasteryofcollege-levelmaterialandearncollegecredit.ACLEPtestisofferedattheendofSpanishIVasawaytoearncollegecredit.BypassingaCLEPexam,studentscanearn3ormorecollegecredits.
