OQSO PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Oklahoma Quilters’ State Organization February 2017
Spring Retreat 2017
Sequoyah State Park in Wagoner, Ok.
March 24-26, 2017
Registration Deadline is February 15
Hi Super Stars,
Yes, you are all Superstars in our books. We are happy that you are considering attending the OQSO Spring Retreat at Sequoyah State Park on Lake Fort Gibson. We have some great teachers with new classes on tap this spring. I hope you find at least one that you will enjoy. I am espe-cially looking forward to the classes by our Featured Teacher, Deb Tucker of Studio 180 Designs. Her techniques and rulers are fantastic. I have the collection and use them on most patterns. I truly
enjoy rulers that are not limited to the patterns by the designer and these are versatile for sure.
Take a look at 2 contests we will be sponsoring.
12.5” unfinished STAR Block Lottery. Show us your favorite Star Block. Remember for each block you submit you get a ticket for the block drawing. Always fun to see the different blocks
that our members create.
Star Bag—Make a bag - no rules—any size—any design. Prizes to be awarded.
The winter made it really easy to spend time in my sewing room. I have several new things to show off. Don’t forget to bring your accomplishments even if it is “just” a top. We love seeing what you are creating. Looking forward to being inspired by the projects you will be working on
at Spring Retreat.
See You There!
Paula
Featuring Deb Tucker
It all started in 1981, when a young bride-to-be decided
to make a quilt before her marriage. She certainly would
never have imagined what that one decision would be-
come.
Deb Tucker went on to spend the next twenty years de-
veloping her quilting skills, learning about all different
types of quilting techniques, and teaching new and experi-
enced quilters how to make their quilt tops using the most
accurate techniques to create the best quilts their skills would allow.
But, when asked to do a class on the Hunter’s Star, something changed. She
looked up all the techniques available and knew there had to be a better way. Sud-
denly, one night the answer came to her in a flash. Not fully formed, though, it took
several years to get her method refined. The Rapid Fire Hunter’s Star tool and tech-
nique was introduced. Strip piece it, make it oversized and trim it down to create a
perfect Hunter’s Star block. Her Rapid Fire line of tools was born.
Then, her frustration with trimming basic units easily and accurately led her to
develop her first tool to trim down basic units. Her Tucker Trimmer has lots of di-
agonals and will trim any square unit with corner to corner diagonal seams – half
square triangles, combination units, and hourglass units (among others). Now her
line of tools to trim down basic units was born.
She continued teaching more and more classes near where she lived, and as
knowledge of her new methods and tools grew, she began to get teaching engage-
ments farther and farther away and shops began to call to stock her rulers.
In early Spring 2007, two conspirators got together and put together a business
plan, introduced it to Deb, and convinced her she could make it happen. In January
2008, Studio 180 Design opened its doors. Here’s a little bit about our key staff
members.
Deb Tucker is the Creative Kingpin and originator of all the tools and techniques
that form the basis for our products. In addition to her teaching, she has edited two
international quilting magazines; taught and lectured about quilting nationally and
internationally; presided over the Vermont State Quilt Guild for several years; and
has held many traditional terms of office in a number of local quilt guilds. Her
background in education and architecture perfectly suit her current role as designer
and educator for Studio 180 Design. She is the inspiration that keeps the company
coming up with new ideas and innovative tools and techniques.

I am looking forward to the next 2 years as your Vice President. I am so excited about Deb Tucker
being our guest speaker. I want to encourage everyone to take advantage of our classes we are offer-
ing. There is nothing better than the learning and fun in a class with friends. See you in March.

Deb Tucker—$45 Rangeley Wall. The streamlined construction of this star block was conceived while working
at a retreat in Rangeley, Maine: hence the name. Using Deb’s Tucker Trimmer 1 tool and an additional trim, all those complicated
star points become simple to make. The project has a complex look, but is actually very easy to construct. Just what we like! Deb
will have rulers available in her vendor booth.
Janet Leigh North—$30 3-D Tumblers. 3-D Tumbling blocks: Easy, peasy strip piecing! We will sew strips
together, make repeated cuts from a 60° ruler, then sew the blocks together in long strips. Marci Baker’s technique is simple, with
no Y seams!
Elsie Campbell—$30 City Slicker. A single shape—a half-hexagon— make up these two very different quilts.
Learn Elsie’s easy technique for perfect Y-seams while stitching a light, a medium, and a dark half-hexagon into simple blocks. Then
arrange the blocks and stitch them in straight rows.

Elsie Campbell—$15 Love My Stash. Need a project to slash your stash? This is the quilt for you! Turn lots
and lots of squares into half-square triangle units, and into Nine-Patch blocks. Then, play on a design wall to reveal many amazing
settings for your blocks. Learn how to use color and value to create effective designs while using every color in the rainbow (or in
