ADVANCED PERIODONTAL INSTRUMENTATION: NEW THERAPIES, TECHNOLOGIES AND INSTRUMENTS ADVANCED INSTRUMENTATION CLINICAL WORKSHOP: BIOFILM MANAGEMENT
SpeakersAnna Pattison received her BS degree in Dental Hygiene from the University of Southern California and her MS in Dental Hygiene from Columbia University. She was an Associate Professor at USC for over forty years, has served as Chair of the Department of Dental Hygiene and is an internationally recognized speaker on Advanced Periodontal Instrumentation. She is co-author of Periodontal Instrumentation and has contributed to the last seven editions of Glickman’s and Carranza’s Clinical Periodontology. She is the former Editor-in-Chief of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene and is currently the Co-Director of the Pattison Institute which offers online videos, lectures and hands on workshops in the U.S. and abroad.
In 2005, she received the Pfizer-ADHA Excellence in Dental Hygiene Award and the USC School of Dentistry Alumnus of the Year Award. In 2006 she received the California Society of Periodontists Award and in 2010 she was inducted into the USC School of Dentistry Hall of Fame.
We are honored to have ADHA President Jill Rethman provide greetings on this special occasion of our 20th anniversary of the Annual Dental Hygiene Lecture. Jill is a graduate of The Ohio State University. She is currently the 2015-16 President of the American Dental Hygienists’ Association and also the Editor- in- Chief of Dimensions of Dental Hygiene. Jill is a visiting Clinical Instructor at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Dental Medicine, Department of Dental Hygiene, and an Adjunct Professor at The Ohio State University School of Dental Hygiene.
Activity DescriptionAlthough the ultrasonic instrument was originally introduced as a device for removing gross su-pragingival calculus of tooth surfaces, it has emerged as an evidence-based approach to manag-ing subgingival periodontal disease. Several events have occurred to elicit this response, such as:
• Recent emphasis on periodontal care for all patients, especially with nonsurgical modalities
• Evidence-based research demonstrating effectiveness with ultrasonics
• Equipment enhancements with emphasis on tip size for anatomical negotiation in tandem with patient comfort
• Increased physical fatigue and ailments by dental providers who have been using traditional instrumentation
• Consideration for time efficiency
The hands-on workshop will update the dental clinician with the versatility of using ultrasonic instrumentation in periodontal root planing and supportive maintenance procedures.
This course is designed for dentists and dental hygienists.
Educational ObjectivesAt the completion of this activity, participants should be able to:
• Describe the current literature justifying the use of power driven instrumentation
• Describe the indications and contraindications for power driven instruments, including safety precautions
• Select the necessary instruments commercially available to achieve effective results
• Implement techniques to enhance patient comfort
• Incorporate power driven instruments into the periodontal component of the practice
Registration Fee and Credit:The registration fee is $349 for dentists and $249 for dental hygienists and includes a continental breakfast. The UNC School of Dentistry designates this activity up to 6 hours of continuing education credit. A discount is available if you attend both courses.
Time and LocationThe program will be held at the UNC School of Dentistry on Manning Drive. Registration will begin at 8:30am. The hands-on workshop will be held from 9:00am – 4:30pm. Continental breakfast and lunch will be provided with your paid registration. The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry cautions continuing dental education participants that there are potential risks of using limited knowledge when incorporating new techniques and procedures into the practice of dentistry, especially when the continuing education course has not provided supervised clinical experience and/or competency tests in the techniques or procedures.
